Fallout 4 Officially Revealed for PC, Xbox One, PS4 [Reddit Rumor = Ban]

You know what, I'm just excited to play another Fallout game. I was never really into 3 or NV that much, but I always loved exploring and finding new quests and areas on my own. (Like what I'm doing with TW3)

Graphics look good enough for me, especially for these next-gen consoles. Looks to be the same engine, but much more polished. As long as the game is fun, aw ye.

I just saw the trailer and I was not impressed. Fallout New Vegas came out in 2010 and it took them five years to make a marginally better-looking game.

I'm calling it now that the game was originally cross-gen until they decided to drop the last gen systems recently.

In regards to the art style, it is really bland even with the additional colors vs Fallout 3+New Vegas.

There are current gen games out now that have much better art styles and graphics at a fraction of this game's budget.

And if they attack using brooms, it'll be even better.

Anyway, I assumed the thread would be a lightning rod for Bethesda hate, but damn. Have expectations people, but it ain't right to assume that what you want is what everyone else should want. Looks like it'll look good to me.

Because they swept the Yankees? What? Sounds a little anachronistic...

(See, Mass-GAF? A New Yorker knows big words too!!!)

If these games piss you off so much, why the fuck do you care then?

You know three of the previous four games in this series are not like this? And even three had a veneer and genuine intention behind it to reflect the core values of the series.

I care because I see the last vestiges of literature being sold out of the industry. It's a sad time.

Yes, because comparing an announce trailer where you don't know what state the final graphics are in, to a screenshot of a finished product in-game screencap is a logically sound way to go about things.

Ok I'll just assume that there are still major graphical upgrades in the pipeline lel.

Trust me, I am day 1 on this game, will love it as much as the next guy, but the graphics and engine (if it's Gamebryo again) are way lower than even my expectations for Bethesda.

cause we know bethesda's track record + skyrim sold a billion copies
It's Bethesda's track record that led him to being disappointed with the trailer in the first place. That makes no sense. He also wasn't complaining about the graphics, he was complaining about things like writing.

If you have that much of a problem with Bethesda's track record then you shouldn't have been hyped by the idea of Fallout 4 in the first place, because you know what kind of developer they are.

All the hyperbole about it "looking like a PS3" game I'm seeing all over the internet is driving me nuts.

Have these people actually played a Fallout game on PS3? They are a blurry mess. Fallout has never been about awesome graphics anyway.

It looks like Skyrim running on it's higher settings on a decent PC. I'm happy with that, all things considered.

Guys.... guys... maybe they are targeting 60 FPS??

Seriously though I think the game looks pretty decent and is about what I expected on consoles. Hopefully PC gets much higher res textures right off the bat (obviously the mods will come, but will we pay?).

Well it certainly looks like a small step above from Skyrim, the dog animation reminded me of the dragons flying in strict line pathways. You never play these for the graphics so I guess it looks compelling enough.

I'm very underwhelmed visual-wise for a debut trailer. At least it can't possibly be downgraded (can it?)

If It would be downgraded from that it would be next to fucking dinosaur bones

This is sex.

That image quality tho

If by sex you mean that it looks very dated, then yes, it is sex.
I really wouldn't expect such a post from a graphics afficionado like you :)

Fuck the graphics they need to focus on those damn bugs. We better have any more game breaking or save deleting bugs in this shit. I honestly can't deal with that for another gen from Bethesda.

Its finally here, after 5 years we get a new fallout game. Admittedly the graphics didn't blow me away from that trailer, but who cares? That has never bothered me with their past games. Bethesda games always play best on PC and that means mods, glorious mods!

I'm betting on Fall 2015, I can't see why not, the game has had 3.5-4 years of dev time.

Oh God. If it's this year I'll start with the crying.gifs can't handle it.

But I really doubt it.

You can have lifeless without turning the entire game into a grey stain. Still New Vegas was much, much worse in that respect than FO3. A brown mess, from the wasteland to the buildings.

Yes and no, fallout artstyle was always serious/realistic and colors are usually perceived as sign of life so they were not really present in past titles(especially in fo1&2, i mean look at their screens they are all brown!), in fact looking at the trailer the fo4 wasteland feels more alive and less deadly than the one in fo3 imo.

Saying fallout 3 is VATS doesn't excuse atrocious shooting mechanics, it only sidesteps the problem. Why can't they have both? Everyone would be better off for it.

Ehhh, I dunno. I think the VATS system gives the skills you pour your points into more weight, which translates better in a turn-based system, imo.

In one of the other FO4 threads, GreatestHits explained it better:

Bethesda have always wanted their games not to be straight forward, but rather open-ended, and that was reflected in VATS. The original fallout had very open ended gameplay where you could do many things with your action points. With VATS, you can pull off impossible shots, and do creative things with the game. And no you don't always shoot in the head (even though most of the time that's the best place, as reflected in one of the quest names in NV), sometimes the legs are the best to take out first if its a powerful enemy, or a wing, or whatever the situation calls for. It's a different approach to combat that brings back the old play-at-your-own-pace stuff and allows you to strategize and calculate in the heat of battle

So I think VATS, for Fallout, is the better system. As for tightening up the gunplay, I don't know how you create a better VATS-free shooting experience in Fallout without making skills seem pointless though.

You must be fun at parties.

Are you trying to make me feel like an inferior human because I am willing to have strong, well stated contrary opinions and that therefore makes me less accepted by others because of my unwillingness to concede to the group think?

You must be judgemental of others way of life.

If by sex you mean that it looks very dated, then yes, it is sex.
I really wouldn't expect such a post from a graphics afficionado like you :)

The sense of atmosphere and the fact that the sky is now blue and we got rid of the ugly piss filter from Fallout 3.

You're right, I'm a whiny entitled asshole for expecting a game in 2015 to look better than the trailer they put out makes it seem.

What's your problem dude? If you disagree with what I said give me a reason don't resort to personal attacks like a whiny child.

My apologies. My problem, amongst other things, is that you said this looks indicative of a 360/PS3 game. Which is a blatant falsehood. It just plain doesn't. I mean, it doesn't look like ground breaking, but why should every new game set new standards in graphical fidelity. As long as the aesthetics/art style and gameplay are done correctly "technically" poor graphics can be overlooked.

Don't care about graphics, game looks great. Just hope they don't remove third person mode for some reason.

EDIT: Nobody seemed to care too much about Fallout 3 and NV not being the most amazing looking. Why? Because they were FUN.

And if they attack using brooms, it'll be even better.

Anyway, I assumed the thread would be a lightning rod for Bethesda hate, but damn. Have expectations people, but it ain't right to assume that what you want is what everyone else should want. Looks like it'll look good to me.

LMAO #dead

I don't care about graphics. i just want this game to play like a normal game and not have your character move like a retard. walking in fo3 and fo NV is like navigating quick sand.

Holy shit. This looks insane. How did they manage to pull off these visuals? It's staggering to think we have achieved these graphics over the past decade. I may have to upgrade my GPU for this!

Okay, I fully admit that as a proud resident of the state of NY this will sound salty as hell, but is it just me who has noticed that Boston has seemingly become the center of the United States over the last ten years?

Yes, I'm aware that there are a lot of reasons for Boston to be so popular, all of which are from the sports world. It was started in 2004, when the Red Sox, down 3-0 in the ALCS against their archrival Yankees, came back, won all four games, and went on to sweep the World Series and become the most popular team in baseball, winning two more titles since. The Patriots have been the measuring stick in the NFL as Tom Brady has become the game's most popular player by a country mile, and even controversies like spying on other teams and deflating footballs have seemingly INCREASED their popularity. The Celtics and Bruins have consistently been among the most popular franchises in their respective sports, and the horrible tragedy at the Boston Marathon two years ago just increased the love and admiration for the city. One of the biggest stars in the WWE, John Cena, is a native of West Newbury, just outside Boston. One of the most acclaimed and popular movies of the last ten years, The Departed, was set in Boston. Oh yeah, and the frigging Olympics are most likely going to be held there in 10 years.

And now, Fallout 4 will be set in Boston. While the series isn't as high-profile as, say, Grand Theft Auto it's still a a huge show of respect for a city. And considering that residents of the city aren't exactly...ahem...humble, I think it's just going to increase the ego of Mass-GAF.

And I'll just say it now. Translation: BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

*shrug* I dunno. For me personally, not being a sports guy, I feel like all I hear about is San Francisco and the rest of the bay area and Seattle. Then again I'm in tech and super tuned in to tech news, so that makes sense.

On topic: game look great, haters gonna hate. I cannot wait to play it.

This is one ugly fucking game. And animations that would be out of place in almost any open world game from last gen. I cant even tell you how disappointing that trailer was.

You know Behtesda has made a lot of money from the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series. A lot of money. This is how they repay us. Pocketing every spare cent and rolling out this same shitty engine over and over. Bunch of cocksuckers.

Here come the meltdowns

Nice strawman.

There is no way I could compete with the quality of your contributions, so I'm out.

I said it looks like a ps3/360 game and told you a ps3 game, how is that a strawman?

In a separate post I said that TLOU can be used on ps3/ps4 to show the graphical capabilities/potential of said hardware, I was not insinuating that the exact level of graphics from TLOU can be done in every game ever.

You haven't contributed anything of worth anyway so you won't be missed, sorry I'm pointing out my issue with a game on a gaming forum, shocking, I know.

So what exactly do you want this game to look like? The Order? Killzone Shadow Fall? Linear games vs what will probably be one of the biggest open worlds ever made. When you make a bigger world, the graphics are going to take a hit. That's why the best looking games are always enclosed linear ones. The open world games that look great take big hits in framerate. Just look at Assassin's Creed Unity and The Witcher 3. The former was barely playable at launch and the latter has been quite annoying on PS4.

Should we be critical of games? Absolutely. I find myself more critcial than probably 95% of the gaming media. I would tear apart something like Dragon Age Inquisition in a review, but for the right reasons, gameplay ones. Graphics should be the least of your concern in an open world RPG. What you want would have taken Bethesda until 2018 and would still release with tons of bugs.

I want Bethesda to have their priorties in order:

A bigger world than ever before
Interesting Quests
Varied environmental and enemy design
A steady framerate
New gameplay mechanics

If they can nail all these, then fuck graphics. But if Bethesda fails to accomplish these things? Then fuck it, criticize them all you want. But let's be critical of the things that actually matter in regards to making something a good game.

Thank you for adressing my issues like an adult instead of getting offended that I said the graphics in a game are not up to par with where they should be at this point in 2015.

You bring up some good points and when you phrase it like that I agree. The graphical fidelity should be the last priority on this particular game as long as they fix/optimize the issues you laid out about openworld games.

It's too soon to know if they fixed those issues but since the graphical fidelity can be evaluated at this point that's what I chose to evaluate since we don't have more to base our impressions off of until we see some gameplay.

That... well errr... was underwhelming. Ganted it is the first trailer so it's far too early to judge.
My biggest concern is for a new gen only game that the models look like something off a ps360wiiu. Hopefully the character models has more time in the oven before release?
Or maybe the game sacrifices model detail for something taxing like fully destructive enviroments, lighting and tons of particles or something like that? *shrug*

A nuclear meltdown is far, far different from the effects of a global nuclear war.

While after 200 years, some plant life would return, the decade(s) long nuclear winter would kill off the majoirty of plant life.

Computer simulations claim that a nuclear winter would last for 20 years, which is still quite devastating, but probably wouldn't lead to a global ice age as not every part of the earth would be equally affected. Plant life would grow back, it certainly did after one ice age.

pls stop, it's embarrassing

The character models do look pretty last gen though. I'm not seeing anything that couldn't be done on those consoles. But the environments are a generally large improvement but at the same time they don't wow me either. Definitely par for the course for a Fallout game.

One thing I am disappointed in are the lack of vehicles. I was hoping they would sneak in a few drivable vehicles for Fallout 4 to make it a little more like Fallout 1 and 2.

Honestly, I find the bad graphics kind of endearing. Or maybe just the dog. Whatever. I jist hope they hired a good writer, even if the questing sucks.
Are you trying to make me feel like an inferior human because I am willing to have strong, well stated contrary opinions and that therefore makes me less accepted by others because of my unwillingness to concede to the group think?

You must be judgemental of others way of life.
You must be fun at parties.

The people here who are bitching about the graphics need to get over themselves.

When have visuals and pretty lighting been important in an RPG? What matters are the story, characters, and player choices.

They aren't well stated because they're taken from such a limited amount of information that it's hard to take those strong opinions seriously in the first place.

For someone who has never played a Fallout game, the trailer looks interesting but it didn't blow me away. I get that for a lot of people, they have been waiting a long time for this so obviously they are hella hyped but for me it was just a "Ooh I'll keep my eye on this" not "HOLY SHIT!".

I can't help but add to the pile and say it looks like a PC port of a last gen game. I'm playing through The Witcher 3 so it looks quite bad in comparison, I get that it isn't finished yet but it isn't a promising start. And yes graphics aren't everything but I expected the next gen game from the people who made Skyrim with a huge publisher behind them to match/outdo the smaller CD Projekt Red.

There's still plenty for them to show us though so I'm looking forward to the Bethesda conference.

It's funny how you always see in threads people saying graphics don't matter and devs shouldn't focus on them to keep the costs down, they just want a good game. blah blah blah etc.

Then read you a thread like this and it's no wonder these companies engage in money draining graphics arms races to please you jerks.

I can understand people thinking this looks OK, because it totally looks OK, and I will play the shit out of it because OK graphics are OK.

But the people talking about the graphics as some mindblowing tour de force, I don't get.

The art style isn't something staggering, it's fine and pretty much as expected. From a technical perspective, there are jaggies everywhere, overlayed with some heinous blur, the lighting looks nice enough, geometry detail is in the toilet and there are a lot of other rough edges.

It's fine, and if this level of graphics means squashed bugs, great performance, much better animation and voice acting, and a busier world, then it's all good. But I have no idea how these graphics can blow you away when, for example, Witcher 3 just came out.

I love modern gaming discussion. It's like the hyperbole Olympics of who can say the most outrageous shit to express their opinion.

From: 'I hope they polish up the visuals'
To: 'LOOKS LIKE DOGSHIT FUCKING COCKSUCKERS'

How much do you guys think the first texture mod will cost?

I'm hoping for a mod for the shopping carts. As bad as the PS2 era textures and animations were at the end, it was the shopping carts right before that that really got me. I already know exactly what its going to sound like and exactly how its going to bounce.

Graphics arent everything. But when a company has made as much money off of these games as Bethesda has, they fucking owe you.

I'll be thoroughly disappointed if no one speaks with a Boston accent.

And also, I almost cried tears of joy when watching it the first time.

Some of the shots kind of worry me though. To me, the ugliness of FO3 and NV added to its sardonic and cynical style. Now it seems to be more in line with Borderlands, Mass Effect and Destiny in colour-scheme, which to me isn't what Fallout is about.

I'm still really impressed and excited though, graphics look great.

Looks fine to me. It's Fallout 4 and it's more or less the jump I was expecting. Don't get why, with Morrowind, Fallout 3, Oblivion, Skyrim, etc. for perspective people expected this to be The Order level visuals combined with huge open world.

Man though it would be a hoot if you could play the entire game as the dog though.

Anyway I'm satisfied with that - more Fallout, more mutant retro 50s mayhem, more dogs (please don't die!).

Morrowind and Oblivion looked amazing when they first came out. Also, the gap from Morrowind to Oblivion was just shy of 4 years, and the graphical jump was ridiculous. Fallout 3 is going to be more than 7 years old by the time Fallout 4 comes out.

Skyrim was a good jump, not Morrowind to Oblivion big, but still good. Main thing was being rid of the god awful art direction in Oblivion.

Has nothing to do with looking like The Order, but Bethesda's own history shows they are much more capable with graphical jumps than this. A lot more.
