Halo splitscreen co-op RIP 2001-2015

I'm old man status now and don't have people over to play games that much anymore. Loss of local co-op means nothing to me.

I could see how some people would lament it though, last time I did it was Halo 2.
 
Not hyperbole, but this delayed my purchase on the X1 until next year. I always play the Halo campaigns for he first time via local coop since Halo series usually brings great memories.

This really bums me out :(

i doubt the number of players utilizing the feature is the only important factor here, especially when it comes to halo, which is literally the go-to place for split screen gaming on any platform that isn't a nintendo. nor do i see why some people are so quick to say that nobody used split screen when playing halo, of all games! i doubt many players here can even complete a decent length online mp session without finding grouped local players.

Halo was always a coop experience for me via campaign and not having local coop really kills the excitement for me:(

Going from 4 player to 2 player wasn't great, but I excepted that, but this is just too much!

if games had splitscreen in 2015

but killing splitscreen has been a thing since well before 2015 and what's causing it is arguable - however you can't deny that there was a huge emphasis on visuals and online functionality last gen, which took many traditionally split-screenable genres, like fps and racing, and neutered them, and that was never our choice. it wasn't ever our choice that there's nothing split-screen to play, which is the main reason nobody plays splitscreen, and the main reason many halo players didn't want to see halo of all series drop the feature. halo was the last bastion.

anyway, 1% is as far as i'm concerned an insane lowball when you're talking about the premier split screen series on consoles. halo was half the reason people owned multiple controllers last generation, because toward the latter half they sure as hell weren't getting their fix elsewhere.
 
Halo is great not just because of the local co-op Because of the online multiplayer and local split screen, and those are coming in Halo 5

THERE IS CO-OP ONLINE FREE! WITHOUT GOLD

And I agree that is better to have the option, for me this is not a big deal, I usually play co-op online with friends no offline

The point is that there are so many others things that should be focused on instead of a decade old feature that a small percentage of players have even used.

Obviously I'm not a game developer, but I imagine it takes a LOT of work to get something like that running. Just not worth it.

It's only hard to maintain a decent frame rate in split screen if the developer doesn't plan on it from the beginning. Plenty of games on low powered systems managed it just fine, including Halo 2 and 3.

On the other hand the awful performance of halo 4 and H2A in two player split screen already demonstrated where 343 puts their priorities. And the Bungie halo games had terrible online co-op because they were built for split screen or LAN, even Halo Reach online co-op was a laggy mess and H1A was near unplayable. If I remember right halo 4 already was better at online coop so hopefully this change comes with improvements to the online mode that will now be the only option.

How can you possibly even know the percentage of people that use it? There is enough disappointment stressed in this thread and reddit alone that suggests that your "1%" estimate could not be more wrong.

I don't see anybody saying this I'm sure if you asked most they would tell you they absolutely did splitscreen at one point, most are saying that it is used way less in today's world.

what's the relevance of pointing out that it's a 'decade old feature'? if anything that strengthens the reasoning for our desire to see a feature that has helped to define halo since the beginning move forward alongside the rest of the series, especially in an era where hardware can actually do it justice better than ever. and you can imply that only a small percentage of players played halo splitscreen all you'd like but if there's one splitscreen game where that's the least intuitive possible explanation, it's halo. shitloads of people grouped locally to play multiplayer and the proof was there every time you'd hop online.

again, it's not simply used less, it's not even given as an option in most games, and it's been clear since last generation that that transition hasn't simply been a result of us not utilizing the feature, but often because things like getting hefty sexy engines to run on aged or weak hardware take precedence above all to pubs and marketers.

it's like, if over the course of this generation, publishers and devs alike start to drop resolution in their games in order to keep them running well.

and then by the end of that theoretical generation, when every game is 800p, i'm surrounded by people telling me, "well nobody even uses 1080p anymore so"

I think skipping it is a big mistake. Sure probably 1% of people over 20 use it, but I bet the % under 20 is way higher. Every kid with a brother uses couch co-op. Dorm rooms are full of them (though they may be more likely to play couch multiplayer, but still)

Actually, that's a good question. Is split screen multiplayer still supported? It's probably a lot more important to leave that in there.

That feature didnt define Halo.. Please remember that Halo brought ONLINE to the Xbox....ONLINE PEOPLE!! "o n l i n e" no local co-op campaings (Gears is more like that)
 
This really sucks. My sister and I went through all the main Halos and ODST this way. Its a big reason why Halo was fun for me.

halo had extensive local functionality long before gears ever did. halo had split screen campaign co-op long before gears ever did. and yes, these things helped to define Halo and give it appeal. the profound success of Halo 1's local play is much of what enabled Halo 2's online focus to begin with.

halo brought a lot more than just 'ONLINE' to consoles, what was your first halo game, 3? it brought FPS to console in every context, single player, local multiplayer, local co-op, and then eventually, online.

My wife will be disappointed too, but the positives I'm seeing far outweigh the negatives for us.
 
oh my favorite feature... in fact the only mode I've beaten any of the halo games on.

So this hurts, I likely won't finish it then :(
 
Fuck 343 seriously, this is THE feature that made Halo, Halo for me. They just keep doing this shit, hoping for people to lose their jobs is fucked up but these men and women can not be trusted with an IP of this magnitude.
 
Considering the number of poor decisions made up to this point, it's honestly not surprising. Just save your money. The game's not worth it.
 
I certainly won't be buying the game then. That's pretty much where I spend all my time playing halo. Considering how much the quality of the games has dropped off I guess it's not much of a loss anway.
 
I finished my first playthroughs of h1-h3 local co op split screen, carrying my buddy who sucks at console fps the whole way through all three games. Man he was useless but those were some fantastic good times.

Local co op was part of Halo DNA, very disappointed
 
I guess I won't be picking up the new Halo then. I only play Halo these days because of the split screen coop. It's kind of a tradition to marathon through the game when my out of state friend is visiting. Take away the coop and the game is useless to me.
