Getting into Halo

Try all the games, in the order of release:

Bungie:
Halo: CE
Halo 2 - worth playing or at least watch LPs
Halo 3 - a satisfying ending to the trilogy.
Halo 3: ODST (takes place during events of Halo 2, different take on the series while not a complete spin-off.)
Halo: Reach (Prequel to Halo: CE, brilliantly executed - Bungie's last.).

343:
Halo 4 - I recently finished this having played through the original trilogy, loved it. It's much better than what people give it credit for.
Halo 4: Spartan Ops (included in H4). Just watch the Episodes.

Just started up MCC again to get back into Halo myself, haven't touched the game since launch month

It's nice to see they STILL haven't fixed the godawful juttery mess that is the Halo CE cutscenes

I played CE on PC back in the day, but I am looking into getting into Halo now - perhaps erring towards the more competetive elements of the game, so is Halo 5 a good point to dive in (as in, is it looking like its popular with the scene) - if not, what is a good jumping in point?

Was in the same position when I got Halo MCC 2 months ago, I went and finished halo 1 through 4. Absolute blast, I plan on doing the same with the Gears of War collection.

A neat feature is they let you jump back and forth between original gfx and updated graphics as you play.

I think Halo 5 will be a great point to jump based on what I've played in the beta, but if you can't wait until then you can grab a MCC bundle.

Since ODST. Get it right.

Reach is garbage and Halo 4, for whatever reason, doubled down on that garbage direction.

When people call games like Reach and Halo 4 "garbage", it makes their whole input irrelevant.

You might've not enjoyed it as much as previous Halo's, but..."garbage"? Reach and Halo 4 IMHO offer a much better campaign than Combat Evolved.

Personally think Reach was a great game and far superior to 4, but if I had to recommend a game to reacquaint someone who has been MIA since the first one.....Can't go too far wrong with 3. Combat, sandbox, encounters etc are all top tier (IMO).

Can someone help me with this too because I played about two hours of Combat Evolved on the MCC and nearly died of boredom.

Start with 2 or 3 then. Halo ce was fantastic in its time, and the gameplay still holds up, but the level design leaves a lot to be desired. Story and level design took a big leap after CE.

Hoping Reach gets announced as DLC for MCC at E3... abbreviation overload.

The only moment in either Reach or Halol 4 that come close to the likes of stepping onto Halo for the first time, the beach assault, The control room scene, the flood reveal, Finding Keyes, returning to the PoA or The warthog run is "Lone Wolf" in Reach. I still don't give 2 shits about the reused mission areas because they always play vastly different from their first run through.

Comparing CE to Halo 4's go there and push that button campaign with press 'X' to win halos is particularly offensive.

Ignoring all that, the OP pretty clearly mentioned getting into the competitive side of Halo, in which case, avoid Halol 4, Halo 5 and everything in Reach besides ZBNS like the plague.

All personal opinions. Plus saying halo 5 is the plague when its not even released yet is premature and unwarranted.

Gee, I wonder where and when I heard that before.

Oh right, all right up to Halol 4's release and what did we get?

It seems I dropped quite the bomb yesterday with that first post. Allow me to clarify.

Personally, my favorite in the series as far as campaigns go is probably Reach. I loved the story, particularly because I knew how the ending would have to go, and seeing it take its course...it really felt like a swan song for Bungie, since it was their last game. 3 was just as good, but for different reasons. I disliked Halo 4 from the outset, and to date it's the only Halo game I haven't beaten.

The reason I said what I did is because that's how I feel as it concerns multiplayer, which is what OP was asking about. Reach was markedly different from Halo MP in 1-3 and not necessarily in a good way (although I suppose much of it depends on how you feel about armor abilities), and 4's multiplayer felt like 343 was chasing after what made CoD successful instead of trying to see what made Halo 1-3 successful and working from there.

ODST doesn't really count in that regard, since the multiplayer was just H3's with the map packs.

You couldn't have picked a worse time to jump in. 343 Industries has done so much to taint the franchise.

It's been more than 3 years since they shit up Reach with half-baked gameplay changes and redundant playlists. I'm still bitter, but at least we have a new online Bungie game with more frequent updates. Those were dark times, indeed.

LOL

All great games, some greater than others. Play in order for the best experience, as numerous people have said.

Ignore the haters, you will miss out on a really great time if you don't...

HaloGAF was critical as hell of Halo 4 before it came out. People raised concerns about numerous things like kill streaks, perks, flinching, the new CTF, etc. And we ended up being right about a lot of it. Now folks are mostly excited for Halo 5, and from where I'm sitting they have every reason to be. It looks really fantastic. At this point my biggest concern is them continuing to use the Halo 4 style Steitzer announcements in multiplayer, lol.

Play them all to form your own opinion. Buy the MCC and download ODST. If you really want to, you can get Reach for the 360.

I always see this chart, which seems totally normal for any game. All games/multiplayer are heavily front loaded right?

do we have some charts like these for the other halos? And this chart is over the course of around 2 years, right? Having around 30 thousand daily players after 2 years, seems pretty good actually...

Got my first xbox ever last week thanks to that gamerscore / amazon promotion for the xbox one.

MCC was included and I have to say - I relly hated Halo CE!
I was so glad when I finished that game, but people told me that Halo 2 and 3 will be much better.

And how true that was! Halo 2 is pretty awesome and I loved every bit about it.
Just started with Halo 3 and I really love it as well already.
So yeah, like some people here said. Get that MCC!

Edit: Can't say much about the MP though. Everything I wrote was regarding the SP.

100% get the MCC.

It's not perfect, however it's far better than many people here would like to admit. Matchmaking works now and the campaigns are fantastic.

OP reach and 4 were great, don't listen to the naysayers. The online components of these two games were divisive at worst, but the campaigns were excellent.

Reach isn't really necessary to play, but I would highly recommend playing 1-4 in MCC before halo 5.

As far as competitive scene, you don't need to play anything before 5, though you may be a better player if you start playing halo now rather than waiting. MCC online issues are mostly fixed so that would be a good place to start. 4 would probably be the closest experience to what you'll get with 5.

I've heard quite lots of opinions that Reach has the best or one of the best campaings!

I'm really looking forward to grab it when it comes to MCC. And I hope they release it for the collection!

Oh please

The people claiming that Reach and onward are "good, great, best" obviously aren't core Halo fans (which are admittedly in the minority now). It's kind of silly to say,"Ignore all those people that have played Halo longer and are more familiar with the series than I am. I remained ignorant and managed to have fun, so listen to me!" At this point in time, the series exists in name only.

The OP is not a "core Halo fan" though. So I don't think he HAS to listen them, to be very honest!

"Core" fans is usually what I would call "conservatives". Halo 4 is a really great game that some people will never give it deserved credit just because its not Bungie and because they took a different approach in some various aspects of Halo 1 to 3.

Me, just like the OP, am new to the series. I loved all the games but Halo 4 is my favorite!

Sorry if I'm not a " core Halo fan" but I'm happy being part of the new generation of Halo fans!

You don't get to universally judge what a Halo "core" fan is. You can try but you'll always be wrong as different people enjoy different things.

I have played Halo since the beginning and for me the series biggest let down was Halo 3. I also loved Reach and Halo 4. When it comes down to Halo the campaigns are what's most important to me, and they all have outstanding campaigns. The multiplayer goes from mind-blowing to just good across the series.

If you take what's considered the worst multiplayer (Halo 4) and put it along most other multiplayer's it's still a damn good time.

I recommend you play all of them OP, they are all good in there own way and letting other people judge them for you would be a shame. I too recommend The Master Chief Collection plus pay the additional $5 for ODST. It's the best way to play those games and get caught up for Halo 5: Guardians.

That will leave you with just Halo: Reach, Halo Wars, and the two mobile Halo games. In my opinion, Halo: Reach is a must but not essential to the main story. Halo Wars is great but is an RTS game and therefore nothing like the others. The two mobile games in my experience aren't really worth the time or money as they don't do anything interesting story wise and are kind boring but that's completely subjective.

I hope this all helps OP and welcome to this awesome franchise!

Oh really? People who liked H4 and Reach aren't core fans?

Apparently I'm not a core fan. Apparently I haven't been playing this series since 2002 and haven't spent thousands of hours in the multiplayer and haven't played through each campaign 10s of times.

Huh.

Halo is a wonderful serie, you should really get the Master Chief collection and play all of them from first to 4, that what i did too, cause i had not a original Xbox back then and i had played only halo 3, and Reach on Xbox 360, as i said i bought the MCC, played them all and now i can't wait for Halo5

Halo hasn't been good since Halo 3, sadly. Reach and 4 were progressively worse installments.
What? Reach is the best. I guess I'm not a core fan... I only own every single Halo game and have beaten them all. But if thinking Reach is the best for it's gameplay makes me not a "core fan". Ok, I'm not a fan.

That's what divides the casual from the core. The disparity in opinion is much less varied amongst core fans.

Guess not.

So just accept the fact that Halo is not for you, royal core fan, anymore. And let the peasant casuals enjoy it and give their opinion to a new Halo player that is obviously not a "core" fan!

Thank god 343i is not doing games for people with such narrow mind anymore.

As much as I wouldn't have said this a while ago, get the Chief Collection. Play through the campaigns.

More like, "says part of the story." Given there were more games (and shooters) than ever coming out at the time. Along with franchise fatigue, a brand new developer, no beta and more. But yeah, the popultion dropped like a rock.

Well since you seem to be the ultimate judge on how to be a core Halo fan, pray tell, what is required to be a core Halo fan?

Just the opposite. The newer games are tailored especially for narrow minds.

Well since you seem to be the ultimate judge on how to be a core Halo fan, pray tell, what is required to be a core Halo fan?

An objective mindset would be a good start. Once established, go through the Halo Canon in order of release. It's really that simple.

I don't think they ever will. Just switch to classic mode. It looks and runs better, IMO. Also, it's more of a slight distraction than anything else.

Oh, man. I was so close, too. Well fuck.

It is such a dark sorrow that we can only aspire to rise above our station, to dream of leaving the muddy waters and these barren fields behind and rise up and sit next to the lofty royal Core's. But alas dear Rapt, fate makes fools of us all.
