Getting into Halo

Can someone help me with this too because I played about two hours of Combat Evolved on the MCC and nearly died of boredom.

If you played and you didnt like it, no one can do nothing for you, unfortunately.

Some people do consider Halo CE the worst. For me, campaing wise, I would say: Halo 4 > Halo 3 > Halo CE > Halo 2. However, if you don't like Halo CE at all, I can't really see you enjoying the other games so much, except maybe for Halo 4, that is indeed the most different. Still, besides many will desagree, Halo 4 is still Halo and plays like Halo, IMO!

Edit:
However, if you're really willing to give it another chance, maybe you played it as you would play Battlefield, Killzone, Call of Duty, or whatever. Try a different and much more agressive apporach while playing Halo. This is a game where recquires you to use everything at your disposal... abuse the granades usage, change weapons constantly, and do not stay too far away shooting enemies cause that usually doesnt work very well.

Single player on mcc has not had a single problem for me so I'd say start there. Everyone I assume must talk about multiplayer when complaining of problems.

Play through the second level, the one where you land on Halo, play it on Heroic, use the Pistol, Sniper and Plasma weapons. If you have a friend to play with, play it on Legendary.

If you don't like it, then you probably won't like the rest of the game. Assault on the Control Room and Silent Cartographer are other levels that are universally loved by Halo fans, so if you don't like them, then try Halo 2 or 3. Maybe ODST or Reach is more your speed.

Try ODST and Halo 4. They're pretty different. Edit : And yeah, you have to play CE on at least Heroic for it to be good.

I'll give it another go soon. Thanks for the tips!

As bad as MCC has been, there is no better way to play through the campaigns... It's still an amazing collection at a very low price.

And the fact is you can't play better version of all these games anywhere else.

Halo hasn't been good since Halo 3, sadly. Reach and 4 were progressively worse installments.

Yikes!!! I disagree with this statement, but definitely respect your opinion. I thought 4 and Reach were amazing. I'm not much of a multi-player gamer so I can't give you any information about that. Just get MCC and play them for yourself. You've already played CE in PC. I would start with that one again and move through the series numerically. ODST is great too.

Yeah, this is important. Going into Halo 4 blind can screw up the experience pretty badly; watching the terminals first gives the backstory.

Only backstory you need to know is that Halo 4 is an Anime storyline, Cortana is Chief's waifu and she has AI Alzheimer's.

Hey, man. I think you could go in blind and enjoy it, but some people need to be coddled. This is for those poor unfortunate souls.

jk, jk :p

If you are looking to get into the competitive side of Halo there is no better time. You will need to play a lot of Halo 2 Anniversary because that is the mainline Halo right now and what the HCS (Halo Championship Series) is using until Halo 5 drops. They have free weekly online money tournaments that any team can sign up for. Online cups gain you points trowed the championship finals. The Lan events have huge payouts and more points awarded, This years finals is 150k. Rumors have the Halo 5 LAN having a million dollar prize pool. The next big LAN is June 25 at Indy Popcon. I would check out teambeyond.net they have threads for starting HCS teams. But you have to get gud first.

Even the worse Halo campaign is better than most shooters out there... Halo 4 was not amazing but still damn solid and plays great.

I would start at the beginning and plow through. MCC gets you most of the way there now with ODST but Reach is certainly worth playing as well.

If all you're interested in is competitive multiplayer, Halo 5's MP should be fine to jump into. Reception to the beta was mostly positive. As someone playing online since Halo 2, I thought it was leagues better than 4's and Reach's multi and generally made me hopeful for the final version.

If you want to play some Halo MP now, I'd say MCC is your best bet. For the best multi there I'd say stick to 2 and maybe some 3. But it's all pretty good (when it works...).

If you wanna get into the campaign for 5 too, I'd say just get MCC (or a 360 and buy the games individually) and play through the games in release order (1,2,3,ODST,Reach,4). Reach has a really good campaign, but it's not included in the MCC. Although I think it'll probably get added eventually since it's literally the only Halo FPS not included in the collection as of right now. And just for fun; campaign rankings IMO: ODST>3>Reach>4>1>2.

I say this all as a big fan of Halo in general, so I'm fairly biased.

Uh... everyone has there own opinions.

Campaign-wise, play them ALL on Heroic as Normal is often way too easy. All the Campaign are good, in my opinion. Halo 2 being the low point in regards to SP.

Multiplayer is just going to be something you need to figure out. Some people who are utterly insane have actually convinced themselves that Halo 4's MP was anything but one of the worst experiences of last-gen. Most people dislike Reach's MP but then use it as an excuse for H4. Opinions vary.

I'll suggest trying to grab a retail copy of ODST on 360 - it should be cheap, and has the Halo 3 multiplayer with all the maps. IMO it'll be less frustrating than jumping into the Master Chief Collection in its current state.

Didn't get the memo regarding the 14th Amendment
The MCC + ODST addition is really the best game (gaming collection) to get into Halo. Halo remains one of my favorite gaming franchises of all time (even with Halo 4, which I liked just as much as other Halo games). Each one brings something new, and each one has some faults. I think of Halo as the FPS franchise that brings everything to the table in a really awesome gaming package (and I think it has one of the best stories in a major FPS franchise -- notwithstanding single-player FPS campaigns focused solely on the singleplayer campaign).

As far as Halo 5, I really think it will end up being something special. The beta was hitting all the right notes (ESPECIALLY for it being a year out), and the free maps and all the other info coming out is making me really excited. As long as 343 pulls everything off, I do think Halo 5 could end up being known as one of the best Halo games yet. Despite the troubles that MCC has faced (and oh has it faced a lot of problems that shouldn't have been there), I still think it's an exciting time to be a Halo fan. It also helps that Halo 5 will function as two sequels: Halo 5 and Republic Commando 2. =P

Best time to get into Halo for everyone. All Halo are on One console. Please port Reach 343.

hahaha what the fuck?

Just finished ODST 2 days ago. Didnt encounter any issue. Same with other campaign in MCC, back in Feb. Is this a new way to spread FUD? You are tell him to get 360 version when he can get a better looking version for only 5$?

So I'm curious about the opinions on Halo 2's campaign . I played through all the campaigns in MCC, still consider myself "inexperienced" with the series personally, but I thought 2's campaign was one of the better ones. Between Chief and Cortana doing crazy shit, learning about the inner workings of the Covenant with Arbiter, Brute rebellion, the introduction of Gravemind and so on it was a lot of fun. Little room for character development on the UNSC side but I still really enjoyed it.

Is it the levels that make it the low point of the series? I can't much think of it in that regard as I did beat Halo 2 in the Fall and just recently finished Halo 3 and 4, with those two still fresh in my mind. But I'm curious either way as for years I've heard Halo 2's campaign was the low point.

The original trilogy is where I suggest starting. ODST is a different take on the series, but it's a side story worth experiencing, with its moody nighttime hub and non linear story, which is told quite well. It's arguably the best story in the series, perhaps helped by the narrow focus and self contained nature. Reach is somewhat more optional, though the campaign was quite good overall, perhaps the most consistent in the series.

The Halo 3 campaign in particular is simply brilliant. The story has issues, but from a combat sandbox and encounter design standpoint, it's really incredible. If you only play one in the series, it should be that one.

i would agree with this.

get MCC. play 3, then play 1, then ODST, and theeen 2 and 4 if you really want.

Halo 3 on the other hand, was bloody fantastic and I will finish it on legendary before H5 is out. Halo 4 I thought was almost as good as 3. IMO H3> H4>> H2>>>>>>> H1. Yet to finish reach and ODST.

That pretty much sums me up too. H1 and H2 were great the first time I played them on the OG XBOX but now replaying all of them at once, it's not the case. H3 was and still amazing and H4 I really liked also. Haven't played reach and ODST again yet though.

There's not much to get into beyond the original trilogy. If you're looking for some multiplayer then it doesn't matter where you start in my opinion.

So you actively think they are bad games? Reach is still better than 90 percent of other shooters it's just 1 and 3 are incredible and 2 is very good. Imo. Op just get mcc and play through hoping they add reach and play odst deffo too. Oooof so good

Reach's campaign was incredibly replayable for me due to the daily challenges and interesting encounters. Definitely a game that gets you into the action fast and gives you lots of toys to try.

The multiplayer had some disappointments but the complexities and handicaps layered over the classic Halo gameplay was, at least, full of strong design decisions that were communicated effectively to the player.

A good game of Elite Slayer had a real sense of speed and "I'm dangerous".

I love Halo 3 the most for the time of my life it filled but Reach is where I'd jump in, if you can.

Why does everyone instantly blow up the rocket hog in Firefight? Is it too effective or something? Those people are the worst

Yea honestly, I would only bother with 1, 2, 3. Halo Reach had a good campaign but bloom did its damage. Halo 4 was in a similar boat. They're better now with their respective Title Updates, but at their core they're no where near as fun imo.

That said, I had a lot of fun in Halo 5, you're in for a good competitive treat if the beta is anything to go by.

Don't listen to anything the Halo fanbase has to say and react to the games on your own.
For real.

I brought every single game home on launch day, played through each one multiple times, played an ass-ton of MP, but never really got into the community. Mostly cause I don't agree with the fan base at large on pretty much anything.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Seriously? What happened?

Opinions happened.

They're fun. Reach has one of the best campaigns, and 4's campaign, despite a couple of missteps, was really solid.

I've played multiplayer with friends for most of the games (I don't think I played ODST or 3) but I never did much of the single player since I didn't own any of them, I'm really tempted to fully jump on by getting an Xbox One with the MCC, my impressions reading this thread is that if I'm mainly looking for single player I should be okay?

I've been a casual Halo player for a few years (by casual, I mean that I play a little online MP now and then and am a very mediocre player that hovers around a 1.1 KD)

Halo 5 beta was the first online Halo that I really tried to get into and for me it was easily the most enjoyable Halo experience so far.

I'd suggest just waiting for Halo 5 and cutting your teeth on that game.

I played CE on PC back in the day, but I am looking into getting into Halo now - perhaps erring towards the more competetive elements of the game, so is Halo 5 a good point to dive in (as in, is it looking like its popular with the scene) - if not, what is a good jumping in point?

Don't - there are lots of better FPS', especially on PC. halo is WAY overrated.

Get whatever is in the scene or MLG. I'm sorta "Getting outta Halo". I've been there on sight since CE was released on Xbox. I had fond memories of H1-H4.

I never was 100% into the MLG stuff besides watching awesome players. Over time it got depressing because I was seeing more people quit than actually enjoying it. Now that doesn't mean I dislike Halo. It just means I feel like I have a full glass when it comes to enjoying Halo already. I enjoyed Reach and H5 looks good, but I'm not there like I was waiting in line for 4 hours before H2 came out.

The MLG stuff is beyond me. I don't even think all the pros from back in 2005 are still around. A lot of them just left.

It's fun but man does it have its fare share of "Halo only" players. I never felt like the professional side lasted that long to be completely honest.

If you want to get into Halo. Buy the next installment and stick to that. You can play H1 MP, but you have to stick to what's out. Purchase the maps on the day they're out and play MP nonstop. Watch MLG videos and just keep practicing. It was too draining for me and I felt like I was not going to go anywhere by cheering pros on. I needed something more independent.

Halo 1 and 2 are the best for me. H2 MP was hard to beat.

Try all the games, in the order of release:

Bungie:
Halo: CE
Halo 2 - worth playing or at least watch LPs
Halo 3 - a satisfying ending to the trilogy.
Halo 3: ODST (takes place during events of Halo 2, different take on the series while not a complete spin-off.)
Halo: Reach (Prequel to Halo: CE, brilliantly executed - Bungie's last masterpiece).

343:
Halo 4 - I recently finished this having played through the original trilogy, loved it. It's much better than what people give it credit for.
Halo 4: Spartan Ops (included in H4). Just watch the Episodes.
