i don't even know if some of the hashtags on twitter are being sarcastic or are being serious

i just don't know how to react to this other than pure shock that this is a thing

This story is national news today. It's actually #2 on my Google news homepage (not tailored), right after "Democrats reject Obama on trade". Amazing.

This is a worthwhile topic.

For some people it touches on their beliefs about transgendered people.
For others it touches on the applications of affirmative action and the whole white native american issue.
For many more it touches on how race is a social and/or biological construct.
A lot of people want to focus on the appropriation aspect.
A small minority want to settle whether her actions constitute as fraud in specific situations.

Her actions touched a very important nerve in American society and it deserves all the attention it is getting.

See kids...if you want something hard enough you too can make your dreams come true!

"You are what people see you as, not as you want to be."

Aren't these the same exact arguments used against gays?

- Weren't born that way
- Its not natural
- You were abused.

I dont care about arguments because I know they are false, im just showing what is the problem of indulging this weird theory of transethnics, it gets in the way of caregivers doing their job because people start to normalize what is fundamentally a symptom of mental illness, it makes the person less likely to get help if you have other coming from a place of ignorance telling her that its okay to act like your biological father is your stepfather and a complete stranger is your real dad. Read that last sentence again and tell me in which part of transethnics does this fit?

If a kid tells me she is a princess ill tell her she is right, if an old man tells me that he feels that his hand is possesed by demons and moves on its own, well im not gonna tell him he is right and go get a priest, im gonna get him a CT scan cos it might be AHS.

Gaf is usually very progressive. Very surprised about reactions in this thread.
Gaf on its own usually isn't shit.

And not indulging this woman in her lunacy has nothing to do with being progressive. Some of this does, however, offer a telling insight into some poster's opinion and understanding of transgender and now apparently even gay people.

#AskRachel is straight fire
Oh my god yes!

So people are arguing you can be any ethnicity you want to identify with. So if I wanted to be Japanese instead of white, I could claim I was Japanese and that's okay?

The transethnic stuff is so weird/nonsensical to me.

This is where it is for me, and I'll stop joking around a moment to structure my thoughts.

Sure she can do what she wants, but claiming to be black is wrong. She can be a white advocate, she can dress and do her hair and wear the style because she loves it, but actually going that final step and lying about it is wrong. I don't know if she did because of some sort of material gain or because she honestly wanted to help (all the lying wasn't helping however) but in the end, it was wrong.

She should have just been a white women who loved black culture and advocated for them.

I guess I don't understand how this line of thinking doesn't apply to transgender (or maybe it does but what's the real difference?). Is it wrong to say you are of a gender not of your birth? You can only like those gendered things?

I think this makes people uncomfortable because it's not a recognized class of people. That is, we don't have a cultural concept of it and that makes us skeptical especially when we are sensitive to race, no so much in classic antagonistic way but in the hyper defensive way. It's also odd because two opposing versions of this sensitivity culture are meeting. I'd expect at present that the more understood and studied version (appropriation of blackness) will win out. I don't feel it will be that way in 50 years.

Let's be clear. Are you two calling half the people having this discussion closet racists?

Speak plainly.

I already did.

I don't have any problem calling a spade a spade. If I was accusing anyone of racism, there'd be no confusion in my words.

Anything else you'd like to clear up, friend?

Isn't that what Michael Jackson do?
The Transethnic Pioneer!

The author of that, Milo Yiannopoulos is a right wing dude, big supporter of gamergate amongst other things....

Great in a "Jon Stewart and the daily show" type of way.
This whole story is ludicrous and I'm loving how everyone's brains are exploding (including mine)

So Black-Gaf, what is exactly the N-word beneficts that she has earned? Is it none? The standard rap song exemption? Does she gets to say nigga plz?

People are posting trash from Milo now? In that article he brings up Leigh Alexander for no reason other than she is actually biracial and says she could lose a few pounds and step into this women's place. Get that fucking shit out of here

Half this fucking forum wlould "transition" within 20 minutes if the consensus was yes.

Is this really black face?

She's adopting an identity that isn't hers. She's putting on a costume of blackness and co-opting a culture that she might be empathetic to, but that she has no actual identity with. She's talking down to black men (Tyrese) and women (if that social media posting of the girl that was in her class is to be believed) about blackness and black issues as a white woman, masquerading as a black woman, while married to a black man. I suppose if we're trying to define it exactly, "blackface" might not be the best term, but it's certainly as wrong as that, and probably even worse given my above examples. She doesn't get to decide what being black is and lecture people about it.

It's still a hilarious story, but it's outrageously offensive that people here and other places are legitimately trying to give her a pass, as if any good that she might have done makes this okay.

As rude as that can be taken it is a fair point on this, sometimes it is a mental illness and not some degree of 'Trans',k quite frankly i can understand why some transgender and people of colour in this thread are getting quite annoyed with the extreme liberals in this thread who are going out of their way to be open minded and accept this at the womans word!
If tomorrow i got into a (very realistic) rubber dinosaur suit, stopped talking, lived in the woods and hunted, would people think i'm mad? or transdinosaur?

My comment was more aimed at the "open minded" (as you call them extreme liberals) people calling her transracial, or suggesting "if she feels black, she's black".

As in, they're so open minded, they're failing to see reason. So you could say, I was trying to be rude against the "extreme liberals" (or rather, make a joke at their expense) and not the women in the OP, who might have serious issues.

I'm laughing but I actually feel really sorry for this woman. I can't imagine the embarrassment she's feeling right now. So I'm assuming she'll be fired or let go for not being black then? This is fucking weird man.

Welp, she is now seen as a liar and a fraud.

"Not being black" isn't a fireable offense at the NAACP. All the fraudulent shit she pulled might be.

Times like these, I wish Mike was still alive, would love to hear him talk about this shit.

(Look up Michael Teasly JSU. I'd link, but phone. We were friends before he died.)
