AMD Radeon Fury X Series | HBM, Small Form Factor And Water Cooling | June 16th

So at this point what do I do?

I want to upgrade my 7950 I'm in Canada and I don't want to spend more than 500 bucks. I need to be able to play new games coming at 1080p or higher.

Man, I don't know how long I can wait to upgrade. Maybe I'll just get Fiji for now, and wait for the big CPU upgrade if Skylake is just a refresh.

But my mobo or something pretty shitty nowadays. Bluescreens often, and harddrives disappearing. 2600k might be still great, but I want to get rid of my problems.

I mean an OC'd 290x with some extra bells and whistles is nothing to sneeze at. Wait and see what the Fury's final price is though.

I'm so damn confused with the naming scheme and which card is the new generation GPU. I was excited at the $500 price point but was corrected the other day that it is just a re-branded card. Come on AMD. Be more clear with this crap.

They haven't officially launched them, can't really blame them yet. Wait for the 16th.

I'm getting a little excited if there's 360/370 info already.
I still expect 290s to be kings of value and performance though. Just the 3xx shouldn't act like a sun.

I think it's the first time I'm excited to buy a Enthusiast card.
That Fury Pro sounds so good.

Didn't have the same giddy up feeling for the Titan X

At this point? I suggest sit tight like the rest of us.

Depending on how the benchmarks/early prices go, it could cause a shift in Nvidia's pricing for their cards.

Canadian dollar is pretty weak too.....best keep saving money in the interim.

Fury X series = new GPU (possibly > $500)
R9 390 series = R9 290 series (with minor boosts) < $400

Your money.

I jest. I have a 780 that doesn't get any use. I'm curious about the performance but not enough to go through the trouble of buying and returning. Best buy in Miami has stock lined up and ready to go if anyone is curious.

Pricing is 449 on the 390X and 370 on the 390.

I found on the box that the clock on the 390 is 1GHz and the 1050 GHz on the 390X.

Based on what some media types have said, I'm expecting the 300 series to be nothing other than a straight rebrand unfortunately.

https://twitter.com/ryanshrout/status/609437983134089216 (didn't mention AMD specifically, but you can tell he was referring to them...)

It seems no review samples are out there, that's really not a good sign.

That seems like a terrible business decision for AMD. They'd kill any hope of attracting new customers..

Those prices seem really high for what are purportedly just rebrands with an upclock.

While the pricing may be accurate Best Buy is not the best place to go if you are expecting deals. They tend to price up over the fact they have little retail competition

Best Buy allows you to return the card even if opened. However, I would feel shitty buying a product I know I'm returning.

I don't know how you can tell that he was speaking about these cards in particular. Either way, Anandtech seems to have the cards already, Ryan Smith mentioned being busy for the AMD launch so we'll find out in a few days.

Best Buy price matches Amazon and Newegg. They've been typically good on pricing PC parts at MSRP as of late.

300 series already on the shelf.

Well he followed it up with "Nothing more than I've said. Though I think it will be apparent relatively soon." and also linked the LegitReviews' article about AMD today.

But I have heard PCPer and Legit Reviews are very pro-Nvidia so take what they say with a grain of salt.

So is the 390X 8GB supposed to go up against the GTX 980 and the Fury X is supposed to be against the Titan/980 Ti correct? Just getting this straight.

This isn't the first time PC Perspective has been excluded from an AMD event, funnily enough.

They kinda have a reputation of being pro-Nvidia/anti-AMD.

Well lately they've been Nvidia's favorite site that's for sure, but it would be rather stupid to omit them just because of that. I think Ryan has done a decent job at being unbiased regardless of their almost constant stream of Nvidia marketing live streams.

It seems like the Fury line is a way for spendy early adopters to get the "next generation" of video cards (with HBM) and that the whole 300 line is going to be AMD's last line of "last generation" video cards. In terms of price ranges then I guess we'll have to wait until we actually know the prices of the new cards.

I mean, I don't know how big of a deal HBM is really going to be, I guess we'll find out.

PCPer and Anandtech are usually more positive towards Nvidia, and more critical of AMD. Toms was more favorable towards AMD, not sure about now.

Or at least that's how it seems like to me. Anyways it's not a dealbreaker since they try not to misrepresent facts.

Anandtech is the one I'd trust to be more impartial. Not PCPer even if they're not likely to print outright untruths

I read/watch PCPer more than any other tech site... calling them biased is just silly.

This. Ryan is data focused, and lets the cards speak for themselves.

He's pissed because AMD is giving exclusive first look coverage to people who are shills.

I like Tech Report the best out of all the sites, but PCPer is great.

I figured the 300 series was a rebrand when the pricing leaked. Meh.

Good to know not to trust any of the early data released for the Fury line.

PCPer unbiased? They were one of the big companies running damage control when the 3.5GB 970 fiasco hit. They also hid the fact that Nvidia gave them FCAT to measure frametimes back when AMD lagged in that department. And TechReport is one of the most biased too. Get this: they removed Dirt Showdown from their testing because it was too AMD favored. Yet they promote ProjectCARS even though that game is built upon PhysX and is notoriously bad on AMD (even though a recent AMD driver improved performance, they still lag behind).

Andandtech is pretty fair, agree there.

Yeah, TR is awesome too. My top 2 for sure.

I actually re-read PCPer's 970 3.5GB coverage the other night. I found it perfectly fair. Why do you say it was damage control?

And yet Tech Report has recommended AMD cards more times than I can count in their system builder guides.

I'm not personally saying they are biased. That is simply the reputation they have on other tech websites. My point was that AMD themselves probably believe this, so it wouldn't surprise me if they are excluded from review samples/events.

The release date is rumored to be the 18th. If every store starts selling them and there's no reviews out yet, then we'll know for sure what's going on.

Ok, any R9 390X benchmarks yet? Seeing as they're out in the wild...

Just this one guy on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/39nnls/390_benchmarks/

But all he did was bench Firestrike and the score is much lower than a 290, so he either has crazy driver issues or did something wrong.

They aren't sellouts, don't get me wrong. But to be fair, AMD cards have almost always had a price-to-performance advantage over Nvidia at every price bracket except for occasional launches where Nvidia undercuts (680, 970) or simply has the best (980Ti) - it shouldn't be shocking to see them recommended for most builds at least as far as when users are brand agnostic. Tom's often has a lot of AMD recommendations for the same reason.

A guy at Something Awful has a 390X as well and...

(This is Firestrike Extreme 1.1.)

Maybe it's just bad drivers, right? ....Right?

Eh that's the same guy.

Man it bothers me that all he did was run Firestrike and decided he was gonna sell/return them. No GPU-Z, no Tessmark, no games, nothing.

There is a thread on reddit. The drivers on the cd that came with the card are v15.2. The beta 15.5s don't support the card at all (blank screen). Considering how old the 15.2s are and the 390 scoring worse than a 290; it's safe to say the drivers are in the way. Pretty much it's most likely AMD holding on to the drivers until launch day.

What's annoying is that they still haven't run GPU-Z on the 390 to confirm the SP count. If the leaks are true (from the slides) the 390 should best/equal the 290X.

Disclaimer: I don't believe in 3DMark as a benchmark. Part of the reason I didn't purchase the 390 to test was that I didn't really have anything to put it through its paces. The only thing I could do is run 3DMark (which is useless to predict game performance) or play WoW in Eyefinity. (Which my 780 can already do and do it well.)
