Patlabor isn't just the best mecha series, it’s the best anime series, and by a country mile and then some. Let’s start off with the soundtrack, which is sublime. The catalogue of music for Patlabor is as deep as it is wide, with an assortment of classic, hard to get out of your head music littered throughout both the classic TV/OVA series and films such as Sea-Side Highway and If You Want It to beautiful, emotional pieces such as The Sunset of Ancient Times (Video contains Spoilers, sorry!) and just plain awesome tracks like Paradise no Kakuritsu. The TV/OVA soundtrack is both energetic and lively, while the Movie soundtrack has a sense of melancholy surrounding it such as The Second Movies Opening, with more upbeat music like Into the morning sunshine in juxtaposition to bookend the films more energetic scenes.
The animation in Patlabor has aged beautifully, looking stunning on Blu-ray. The mechanical designs are both grounded and tangible while still looking fun and exciting in motion.

The characters in Patlabor are seriously the best you'll ever see in any anime series, with the strongest female cast ever seen, and perhaps ever will see. Each character is lovable, interesting and fun to watch, packed with plenty of personality. Each character gets their time in the sun, with standout episodes for each and every one of them. It's also fair to say that the character designs are amazing too, again full of personality. Just seeing these characters again makes me smile, from the razor sharp Goto and the professional Nagumo to the hard boiled Kanuka and the main character, Noa who is both energetic and enthusiastic, with a passion for Labors, the name given to the mecha in this series.
Patlabor is without a doubt the most diverse series available, showcasing its ability to tackle any type of story, perfectly juggling drama and comedy with tones of action in the mix, it truly has something for everybody. From a groundhog day-esque episode to an Ultraman parody, episodes featuring sea monsters, haunted bath houses and even an episode where two people just talk to one another in a car during a storm, the diversity in narrative are truly unparalleled.
An episode where porn is banned, a clear satire of Japan’s student protests in the 1960's to an episode that deals with something as simple as a toothache. A bomber is on the loose; hiding in a public bath house, with the only bit of description they have is the mole that he has under his armpit. Some episodes surreal, others romantic, with many of them being funny, Patlabor does all of this and more in strides. The greatest achievement of anime is the ability to tell many different types of stories, with no boundaries in sight, and in this regard Patlabor is the greatest of them all. Patlabor is proof of the near limitlessness amounts of stories that anime is capable of telling, even all of these years later. The greatest mecha anime of all time? More like the greatest anime, period.
This is a work of fiction… but in ten years, who knows?

Macross/DYRL, Gunbuster and Gaint Robo are also cream of the crop.

I remember watching the Patlabor movie once when I was a kid on TV. I really liked it and your post makes me want to go back and watch the whole series.

80's mecha anime was the best.

I'd say for early 2000's to mid 2000's; Heroic age, gurrenn lagann and full metal panic.

Lately, from 2010 to current, i'd say gargantia, majestic prince.

I'll give you my top 3

Gurren Lagann
Gundam Zeta
Gunbuster

But really theres just too many amazing mecha shows to have a definitive #1.

Ufo Robo Grendizer
Getter Robo G
Neo Vs Shin Getter
Gundam Unicon
Genesis Of Aquarion OVA ( TV series is good, and fuck Evol straight to hell)

This is generally my top 5 the majority of the time.

I remember watching one way back where there was a construction mecha that wasn't for fighting but on its debut a giant squid or something attacked and they fought it off with it. Had a drill for a hand I think but I can't remember any other details other than I enjoyed it. Sounds vague enough to be any anime or a dream.

For something more concrete, I really enjoyed Mobile Fighter G Gundam. Just thought the martial arts mixed with giant robots was a sweet idea.

I really liked Eureka 7, but I'm not sure it's the best.

Escaflowne is just OK, I don't see why people are so into it. The ending was cliche and annoying.

Attack on Titan

So I've been wanting to watch this.... but I saw they first episode and thought the main character was super whiney and irritating. Does it get better?

Code Geass - Some people already recommended
Gundam Seed - It is more "modern", the only thing newer is 00, which I can't really recommend. If it is for you, you can go back to more retro stuffs.
Nadesico - It is more about the ship, but have a lot of mecha fights
Genesis of Aquarion - Great music, animation, with the pacing of old school power ranger episodes.

A silly question, since they vary a lot in terms of realism, scale, seriousness...but I'm interested in polling opinions since there's such a variety of them.

Not a silly question just a hard one to answer.

It's just as beautiful every time I see it. Fuck off, Robotech. Anyone who said Macross is right. Though to be honest I like about 95% of the shows listed in this thread.

I really hate how people can ignore Macross, Mospeada and Southern Cross, but love Robotech. Also, why no Macross Plus?

Armored Trooper Votoms is also pretty damn good from what I've watched of it. It's one of the best representations of realstic mecha I've seen.

One of the best OP/EDs ever.

There are too many mecha shows to list.

1. Neon Genesis Evangelion
2. Gurren Lagann
3. Zeta Gundam
4. Gundam Wing
5. Unicorn Gundam
6. Code Geass
7. Gundam 00

I'm not as big of an anime connoisseur as many users here, but those are some mecha anime that I've seen and thoroughly enjoyed.

Giant Robo
Gurren Lagann
Gunbuster
Gundam War in the Pocket
Gundam 80th team or whatever it's called
VOTOMS
Patlabor
Evangelion (tv and EoE)
G Gundam

I'm gonna catch flak for this, but Gundam 00 is awesome.

NGE is NOT a mecha anime. Terrible recommendation for someone looking for a mecha show. Terrible recommendation in general, but that's a whole different story.

Most of my picks have already been mentioned (Big O, Patlabor) so I'm gonna throw out an odd one.

Voltes V, guys.
Guys... Voltes V.

It definitely has its share of problems but it's just so goddamn charming and I love that (late 70's?) style of animation.

I still have the VHS from the American dub of the first two episodes.
So. Good.

Ufo Robo Grendizer
Getter Robo G
Neo Vs Shin Getter
Gundam Unicon
Genesis Of Aquarion OVA ( TV series is good, and fuck Evol straight to hell)

This is generally my top 5 the majority of the time.

You... I like your taste.

Also this thread needs more GaoGaiGar! Show is awesome and full of hot blooded yelling and super robot action!

Gundam 00 because it's the most realistic. It is an example of what would actually happen if mechs descended upon the planet. Plus, it has one child soldier.

From gundam the standouts for me are: 08th ms team, 0080 a war in the pocket, 0083 stardust memory, and turn A gundam

I would also recommend votoms. I view votoms as a dichotomy to gundam. Where as gundam is a war on a grand scale votoms for me was an individuals perspective in war where he might not win or necessarily make it through.

I would also recommend overman king gainer. I don't remember much about the series but I remember enjoying it and felt it was different.

Lastly to my favourite mecha series patlabor.
One of the great things about the labors(mechs) in the series are that they have limited resources/ammunition due to police budgets, and the labor batteries provide a 3 minute operation time which decreases if you use an excessive range of motion. This added to the realism for me and enjoyed watching the characters try to work around those limitations.

the orinal ova series- momoru oshii had a limited budget so instead of spending it on action scenes he had to focus on the characters with bits of action here and there, which I think it benefited from. each episode is treated like a different movie genre, such as horror or monster movie etc. The last episode was a bonus episode and oshii wasn't invovled which many hold against it, but I still enjoyed.

patlabor movie1 and 2- these movies are good and can stand on their own, but I didn't enjoy them as much because they felt a little too similar to some of the themes of the episodes from the original ova.

the tv series- the tv series is set in its own timeline seperate from the movies and the original ova series. this is my favourite from patlabor as it focuses on the characters and their relationships the most. At first you might see some of the characters as one dimensional, but as the series moves forward they become the most human and fleshed out of any series. As I got closer and closer to finishing the series I got a little sad because I felt like I was going lose those characters from my day to day life. Also their police division chief is the best in this, eg. athletes foot :).

the 2nd ova series- this follows directly after the tv series and finishes the remaining story arcs, has some self contained episodes, ans has some enjoyable fan service(ultraman, golgo)

WXIII(patlabor movie 3)- this movie is my favourite of the movies. It doesn't follow the patlabor police division but from the perspective of a detective, and the police division and the antagonist show up throughout. It borrows a little from the original ova much like the other movies but I liked the vibe this movie more.

the patlabor series might start a little mundane but it is well worth sticking through.

I probably enjoyed Gundam SEED and Gundam SEED Destiny the most.

I'm a big ZOE fan though so I'm also partial to Idolo and Dolores.

Okay, your passionate post has convinced me to give Patlabor a shot.

Everything Gundam is good though except Wing and Seed.

Woah woah woah, I thought the first 52 episodes of Seed were pretty good. Destiny was a train wreck, but hey, that's Destiny. As for Wing, it's an excellent series, as is the later effective reboot or it with Gundam 00!

As for bad Gundam we have F-91, AGE, and Reconguista. Personally I'd add 0080 but enough people like that for me to ignore my dislike there, and 08th MS team also did nothing for me...but again enough other people seem to like it that there's a chance OP might.

As for my top 3...

Escaflowne
Full Metal Panic
Gunbuster

Blue Gender
tumblr_nadn2v1L8U1teg9gko1_500.gif

There, I said it.

I like Blue Gender too. I haven't finished the series yet, so I can't make enough of a judgment to recommend it, but I like what it's been doing so far.

The glaring sense of desolation and depression that pervades the show is what I really enjoy about it. It feels a lot more realistic than other series in that regard. Much more of a Walking Dead feeling of numbness and hopelessness.

It's got some silly stuff in it though, like how the cockpits are open and exposed.
