Fallout 4 - Multiple E3 Gameplay Demos, Releasing November 10th, 2015

One thing to note is the E3 demo seemed to be on an Xbox One based on the on screen button prompts, meaning that 1) MS probably do have the marketing deal for this and 2) the game will probably look/run better than the E3 demo on our PS4s.

Probably cloud based rendering will be the reason it will look and run better, MS will cover that in hour or so.

Was that a thing in Fallout 3? I don't remember.

Playing through Fallout 2 with low int was a blast:

Losing 1 PER for sleeping with Myron... "Shake it's hand" and "Are you water chip" options for a slot machine... the whole segment in Navarro. So good

Probably cloud based rendering will be the reason it will look and run better, MS will cover that in hour or so.

The real secret was that
it was running on personal computer hardware

I'd almost guarantee it was pc with controller prompts. That's very normal at E3.

Man.

Man. I want to get excited about customizing my own Power Armor or building my own base, a world that isn't grey and yellow rubble and mud land, or having a less broken VATs and combat. Heck, I was excited seeing a refrigerator that isn't a portal to a spreadsheet.

But then I see those dialogue screens and... fuck, man. It's like they straight up took a scalpel and amputated the best part of Fallout for me, while talking about how much they love the series. I am actually surprising myself by how much this is actually kind of painful.

Nah, I was fine with that personally. And the dialogue for failed checks was hilarious at times.

I really grew tired of those skill checks appearing in my options when I didn't meet the required level, not only does it rub in your face that in some cases you won't be able to solve the dialogue in the right way but it often leads you to artificially buff your character to pass the skill check, and in some cases it makes absolutely no sense :P

I wouldn't be surprised if that was recorded on PC with Xbox controller plugged in, good example of this is Witcher 3. Almost every pre-release video was recorded on PC while using Xbox controller and showing Xbox controller prompts.

Are we at the part of the thread yet where we nitpick every little facet of the trailers and suck the enjoyment and fun out of everything? Oh wait that happened 42 pages ago.

Ha! I noticed that all the way back when the thread started as well.

Some people just refuse to be happy no matter what.

Their choice, I guess.

I'm too busy being thoroughly ecstatic with what Bethesda has shown so far. Guess I have "low standards & expectations" or something, LOL.

Thanks to Bioware and Bethesda to have dumbed down the dialog system in western rpgs.

Man, i'm so bumbed about the dialogue system. I think the rest of the game is going to be great but having to guess what the character is going to say is really going to hurt the gameplay.

Does anyone know where I can get the Fallout 4 rendition of the Fallout theme music? I need it! Gives me chills. You know, the one they played during the art stills of last nights event.

Well notice in that gif he is the only one laughing? That's because the rest agree and many do agree that Fallout 3 was better than expansion. Hah

I guess you aren't paying attention to the shocked expressions on everyone else's face? Because they're also repulsed by what they're looking at? Way to miss the point of the GIF, just as 3 missed the point of Fallout entirely.

I can see the argument against the dialogue system they are using and it does atm seem like a big downgrade form fallout 3/new Vegas, but I think we still might get skill based options and maybe hints about choices that effect morality (even without hints these are usually pretty easy to spot by yourself). So long story short I don't think it will be as bad as most are afraid of.

As far as the rest of the complaints I feel like I watched a different e3 conference then a lot of gaf did. I am stupidly hyped for this game. The base thing looks fun as heck too me and weapon crafting omg so good. This will easily win my game of the year.

PLEASE raise the default run speed.

Been playing New Vegas and holy shit it's feels like torture traversing event the smallest distances. Feels like I'm always "running" through mud.

Better than having it based on random chance. New Vegas was less about making your character into a master of all who can do everything, and more about specializing in certain skills and missing out on certain branches. And by artificially buffing your character, you mean using magazines and stuff? Because that made perfect sense. You read a magazine which gives a temporary skill boost, making it permanent would make the player too OP.

Well I for one am actually excited for this game.

Most are. It will go on to sell gangbusters into the millions, will be loved and played for years and will likely sweep many GOTY awards as well. What we are seeing here is a storm in a teacup with a minority voicing their concerns, so I would not worry about it.

Lol true, let them remain like my unhappy dwellers(Shelter). This is like waiting for F3 all over again. I remember picking my lunch box at gs, and playing for the rest of the night. I need to update my shipping speed. :/

Don't misread me here, I like having them as dialogue options, just not having them show when I can't actually use them cause my skill isn't high enough.

To each his own. I personally found the fail dialogue to be funny as hell. Like telling Mr House that he's "chip outta luck" if your barter skill's too low when trying to negotiate for the Platinum Chip.

And you know skill checks aren't in, because? Source please. Pretty sure I've had skill checks pop up in the witcher, and that has a similar conversation system.

There's absolutely nothing shown that shows that skill checks are in, and conversation wheels generally have terrible skill checks.

I don't have a gaming capable PC at the moment either. I was just hoping to stem the flow of whining.

.... I don't even know what to say about that.

Yeah. About how I feel. Really hate that every choice game is getting a voiced protag nowadays like it's the better option. Though, yeah, at the same time I like what I see otherwise.

The more I see it, the more I agree with you.

It's really disappointing to not have the full dialog that is going to be said visible and see which options are speech/charisma/etc. checks.

Is there an official upload of the gameplay trailer that ended last night's conference? The link in the OP has audio sync issues.

I wonder if mods can "fix" the dialogue system. Obviously no mod can add depth to the writing or the dialogue options if those are lacking, but I'm guessing someone could overhaul the interface and have the actual spoken lines shown instead of the 2 word summaries. Maybe?
No small task but, that would be something.
If someone can figure out how to disable the voice acting, that would be even better, but if they have a lot of walk-and-talk scenes like that intro they showed, I doubt it's gonna be possible.

I'm fine with it being different though. With Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity out, and a sequel to fucking Planescape Torment coming... WRPGs will be okay.
Let Bethesda do its thing, at least they seem to be playing to their strenghts with FO4. People keep saying they're shit at writing good dialogue so... what do you even need the old system for, really?
/shrug

Worry about what?

I think it would be nice if Bethesda does set up some kind of system for people to share bases/homes. There could be an online gallery and in order to get said home you would just need to accumulate and gather the necessary resources used in it. Once you have all the rubber, metal and such that you need for everything in it you can then "purchase" it with those resources and have it be all built and setup for you.

It would allow people get cool homes and settlements who might otherwise not have the time, talent or patience to do so on their own. As well as let those people who are super into that shit to showcase their work and get some recognition for the talents and effort.

Comparing any dialogue system to Mass Effects is a direct insult.
Mass Effects dialogue system is that bad.

Progression on right side, Good neutral bad
Left skill checks, alignment choices and exposition.
Pretty damn braindead.

I'll hold my complaints until i've seen more of the game.
You never know, there might even be an option to have it in a classic list.

Ditto.

They actually managed to fuck up the dialog system worse than before, people mocked Fallout 3 because the spellchecks involved repeating back what the person just told you but this is just lazy design for the sake of a more streamlined presentation, the rest looks really great and I dont mind the same haircut textures and whack animation, but after New Vegas it became impossible to return to F3-tier dialog, and this is not helping.

Van Buren it is then.

Great show, I hope that Fallout 4 would be a little more improvement with the jank, but they seem to be putting a lot of love into the game. I'm gonna have to wait for the GOTY edition though.

I agree. If Fallout 3's dialogue is any indication, the dialogue here will be just as shit to go right with the very nontransparent options. Oh Obsidian how I I wish you were on this game. They will always be superior to Bethesda in my eyes. Maybe I am wrong about this whole thing but first impressions matter, and my first impression is the dialogue will not be up to par.

And everyone getting upset over people nitpicking need to get over it. We were shown gameplay, and we are not going to think everything about it was awesome. For the most part, I didn't really see much innovation to get hype about. I saw what looks like almost the same combat system, and neutered dialogue options, and town building (which is cool, but nothing with WOW factor).

They actively went out of their way to write alternate dialogue for not meeting the check. It's brilliant. Never thought I'd see someone complain about a dev going the extra mile.

I've watched the gameplay trailers, first things first, I think this is going to be good no matter what. The environment looks great and it looks like they are keeping some of the key pieces of the series together. That being said

1. I don't really care for the voiced protagonist. I much prefer the silence of the previous games. This gives them a great deal more flexibility with dialogue options. This also gives modders a lot of flexibility to add quests and add their own dialogue. I wouldn't say this is game ending, but it is somewhat crippling.

2. I don't like not being able to know what my character is going to say. Having simple dialogue choices and no skill checks is the pure stupification of the Fallout series. I'll hold out on this opinion for now as they may have skill checks play a part, we just didn't see it in the gameplay video.

I've always role played my character as myself, its just what I've always done. Having a voiced character makes that much harder to do. On the other side of that coin, I may actually try playing as the female character and role play as someone completely different than myself, I've never really tried that before.

I'm still very excited for this but I have to say some of these choices really stab deep.

I understand that sometimes the option is not what you wanted to pick. But I also think that less text can be, frankly, a smart choice.

As for people pointing out that older FO games had a lot more text in their selections, that was completely necessary. When your character's entire "conversation" happens in the selection menu, the dev has to put the entire conversation there. But when there is VA, there is less need since the VA is going to be saying everything and more. I hope I conveyed that idea right. But basically VA games need less text, and I think less text is smart.

I definitely recall a few times in ME where I definitely did not want to do or say what shepard actually did or said. But that isn't entirely caused by this kind of system, but perhaps contributed by ineptitude or inexperience.

Personally I am okay with this system. We'll see how well Bethesda does with it when it releases at least.

The dialog system was shit when Bioware did it and they are semi-competent writers, in Bethesda's hands it is probably going to be so much worse and annoy the shit out of me. Still the game looks fun in an action RPG-lite kind of way and I fully expect it to have all the normal Bethesda downsides as well. I would probably be more upset if we I didn't have all these great kickstarter RPGs to play and had to rely on Bioware or Bethesda for my RPG fix like in the old days.

You pointed out better than me the problem with the system, its not because its inherently inferior to the old one, a competent writer would take the two words and efectively use them to convey the idea of what your avatar is about to say in the form of a sentence, but I have no faith in Bethesda to do this when their dialog choices are known for redundancy and pointlessness. They have been out of their depth since F3 and now they are gonna walk into a system that requires economy and clarity.

People think Obsidian is Obsidian because they are old school, they are loved because their writers are really good with working through this kind of constrains.
