Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

I got all excited until I saw that publishers have to approve the process. There's no way they will given the current climate of HD remakes. There's a reason the very few games currently on the list are MS games or games they could easily get approval for.

It doesn't. As far as why? If Microsoft can offer any 360 game for download with a licence, who would say no?

Publishers who don't exist anymore or games with licensing problems. I'm fine with this system being used for selling digital version, but if it actually doesn't require work, they should add BC support to the firmware and let it work offline with existing discs rather than wasting bandwidth and forcing people to go through XBL.

That and better framerate in my favourite games.

Has that been confirmed?

I'm pretty amped for Red Dead Redemption if it can be released on here... The ability to do screenshots is something I've always wanted. I wonder how it'll be rendered out.

I feel like Rockstar will be pressured pretty heavily to do it.

This is a definite megaton. The list is small now, but hopefully it will grow fast after it officially rolls out this fall.

I've got a lot of disc and digital titles on Xbox 360, being able to play them on one console is awesome. I'll be downloaded ME today for sure.

Didnt they do the exact same thing for Xbox 360 with bc for xbox1 games.
You had to download the game to be able to play it. but the whole thing was abandoned pretty quick i think.

You had to download a compatibility patch. You did not have to download the whole game!

Also as limited as it was I enjoyed having the option. It seems like some people in this topic would rather have no BC than limited BC, and that's pretty stupid.

I need the following games:

Pgr4
Lost odyssey
Red dead redemption
Nier
Dragons dogma

If not, this is pretty worthless to me.

People need to understand this is only for preview right now to test things out with it. The list will probably continue to update with new games and by the time this rolls out for everyone the selection of games will probably be way bigger.

For sure.
I was just expecting more.

It doesn't require development work. The code itself doesn't run without beign recompiled, so they do that on their end and then you download the 'new' working game. It's not a DRM scheme, the disc as it is written literally cannot run.

Obscure Japanese titles like LO, BD, Tales are probably something not to get your hopes up for. I hope for our sake I'm wrong, but I just don't feel it.

LO and BD are Microsoft games, so there's no reason not to expect them. It would be really stupid if they didn't show up.

NCAA Football 14 will not be added...which makes this a non-feature for me.

I wonder how Xbox 360 Digital games will work. Towards the end of the generation, I bought a ton of Digital games on the 360.

There are a handful of games I really want playable:
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Mass Effect 1 - 3 (unless a ME Collection is announced today @ EA's presser)
  • Trials HD & Trials Evolution
  • NCAA Football 14 (the last college football game ever released)

Anything else will be nice, but those are the games I really want released.

Would it be possible for Sony to pull this off with PS3 games on PS4?

Before today I would have said it wouldn't be feasible to pull this off for this gen's console to play last gen console games. I'd say the architecture is too different for it to be run on these consoles. If there was a rumor a week ago about BC, I would say it's impossible, or highly improbable. But now, who knows, this makes you have to rethink everything about backwards compatibility going forward.

However, in the case of Sony, they have the PS Now program, and implementing this feature would cannabalize their sales and promotion program for PS Now, so I think it's less likely that they'd invest heavily in this.

Ah damn, I got to actually go online? I'm not sure now about all that. My internet be ass, but by the time I might actually get one I should be in a better place.

In a world where remastered games are desired and make companies tons of easy money I can't see too many 3rd party studios jumping on this bandwagon. Heck, MS isn't even as deeply committed leaving out some of their big franchises.

The only reason a publisher wouldn't give MS the ok to make their game BC is if they would rather sell a "remastered" version of said game. Allowing BC of that game would surely limit sales of the re-release.

looking at that list, I wonder if MS started down the road of making the Rare Collection, and then through 'fuck it, we might as well do BC'

Ding Ding Ding. This won't be fully out till the holiday. This is only available for Preview Members until then.

Don't forget there have been other Blue Dragon titles like BD Plus on the DS that have nothing to do with MS.

Like I said I know MS published a lot of Japanese titles last gen, but I'm not sure they owned the license rights to stuff.
