Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

But they could say.. hey if you own the PS3 disc (Or digital through their store)... and that game is available for PSNow.. slip that disc in and you can play for free.

I want something like this for PS2 games. I have about 30 PS2 games that I can't play anymore and I'll be a fool if I repurchase all of those off the store.

Although I own physical and digital copies of UMVC3, as well as MVC Origins and MVC2 digitally, I'm guessing none of those will be BC using this system since Capcom no longer owns the license. That's sad.

How will DLC be handled? Say I want to play the DLC from Mass Effect, for example. Will they just make it available on the XB1 marketplace and make it free to download?

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't publishers give the go-ahead, then stick these games on the XBL store and whatnot, and be like "man, that was the cheapest HD port I ever did"?

No need to spend a ton of resources, just blam, stick it up on the XBL store?

Or do we get to keep all our old digital games?

Oh, they're recompiling games? I guess you can kind of call that backward compatibility.

Don't think so. MS said publishers don't need to do anything at all, and I don't think MS has access to the code bases of all the games.

No way in hell given the different architectures.

You could have said that about 360 -> Xbox One, given that 360 is PowerPC architecture. I think the existence of PS Now makes it less likely that Sony would pursue BC on the PS4 like this. It would cannibalize potential PS now sales.

There's no way they will given the current climate of HD remakes. There's a reason the very few games currently on the list are MS games or games they could easily get approval for.
It really depends on the game though, there's obviously more money to be made from the bigger games via remasters so I suppose there are some games that won't get it.

I know that I keep saying it but I'm more than happy with just the two proper B&K games as they're the two games that I keep thinking about on the 360 that tempt me to dig the 360 out again. Ironically though, it was those two games that made me want the Rare Replay collection but this means that I don't have to buy them again.

I suppose they'll be able to rely on it for things like the Fallout 3 promotion that they're doing with Fallout 4, it's probably cost them almost nothing to get that game but it's a really nice bonus for people.

So what's to stop me giving my disks to all my friends and relatives so they get free copies of all my games?

The game license will stop you. Even after downloading you'll need the disc to get past the copy protection. If you have the game digitally you have nothing to worry about.

Just one very important question:

Will the games still retain their region locking? My X360 was NTSC/US but my X1 is PAL.

How would this work?

My 350 has Been relegated to the kids play area so I'm pumped to be able to get some of these games I owned on my bone...

I've been itching to play halo reach out hopefully that gets added soon.

The disc being in the system while you play functions as DRM and what you're describing would be the same as letting someone borrow a NES cartridge or a PS1 disc. You won't be able to play your game while someone else is "borrowing" it. You could install the game on 10 different Bones but it would only work on the one that has the disc inserted at any time.

I was thinking the same thing. In fact, the only 2 games remaining that I still own for my xbox 360 and I will never sell are project gotham racing 4 and ultimate marvel vs Capcom 3. and I don't think the later will be approved.

but then again this is a native support. so even if Capcom doesn't own the license anymore, they can approve for retail games.

The more I think about it the more I'm realizing that this isn't going to be as awesome as it first sounded.

Backwards compatibility on the 360 sounded great too and it was a dud. With the while remastering thing publishers will default to no "just in case."

Chances are that just like on 360, Microsoft will only pursue support for the first year or so and then let it go, no? They didn't spend all that long getting the list going on 360

This is huge, and will likely be the thing that finally pushes me over the edge. PS4 has been plenty of console for me, but I have a huge digital and physical Xbox 360 library.

basically I just ordered an xbox one yesterday- what if I want to download Xbox 360 games, can I just buy them off xbox live and then download them?

Yeah. That's what is confusing me so much. How the fuck did they pull this off lol. Shouldn't be possible in any way that's been done so far. This is downright extraordinary from a technical point of view.

Thank goodness the age of Don Mattrick is now officially over with BC. I can't believe that guy said buy a 360 if you want to play 360 games.

I wouldn't get too excited until we find out how this works. XB1 has a completely different architecture from the 360.

This is either:

- A software emulator. I don't think the XB1 is powerful enough to emulate 360 hardware
- A stream of the game played from 360 hardware
- Games recompiled in x86

I lean towards the 3rd option. I think this is also a way for Microsoft to get a ton of games compatible for Windows 10. Selection will be limited. Don't expect just to pop in any 360 disc and it will work.

They already said a 100+ this fall and hundreds in the months after... Seems MS is gonna push hard and hell they did the work to make it happen. This only really works if anyone can walk into Walmart and pick up pretty much any 360 game and have it work on X1

I'm still incredibly confused how this works. Even recompiling the source code for the platform a lot of platform specific code and optimizations should make it either run horribly or not run at all on the Xone without some kind of emulation. The XOne also shouldn't be powerful enough to emulate the 360 I wish someone with insider knowledge would let us know.

Ah ok. Well, I've been replacing all my 360 games digitally, so I'll just be able to download them. Which is cool.

The real question is whether or not a bunch of games most people don't know about will make it over. If Rayforce, Virtual On, the Cave STGs, and a plethora of other awesome XBLA games make it over... that plus Raiden 5 on the way, maybe this is my console after all. <3

Do we know if its going to be straight emulation, or will it be enhanced in anyway?

Also is it online only (hinting that its using Cloud based processing to make it work better) or is it offline too?

not gonna lie. Kinda jealous coming from a Sony owner. I'd like to play my old PS3 games on my PS4 without using PSNOW.

You're going to be waiting years for either PSNow or the new BC XBone service to have all of your old PS3/360 games on it. It's a nice thing to have but neither service is an actual replacement of those old systems.

Depends on the system that's setup.

They could be adding shovelware titles to pad their numbers. So they'll be looking for anything to get an easy port.

MS said a lot of things about Xbox BC to 360, pretty sure they even said full compatibility would be achieved. Yep.

This is native backwards compatibility, not software emulation. You can't just put the disc in and have it run from there, but the Xbox One is still running code that was written for a different platform.

Any 360 game could run natively on Xbox One - the only restriction is publishing rights.

It's Xbox Originals all over again.

Considering we're nearly two years into the lifespan of the Xbone, I would wager that most of the publishers either a) don't care about their 360 stuff and can't be arsed to rubber-stamp approval, or b) don't want backwards compatibility since it'll spoil their remastering plans.

If this was announced in 2013, it'll be a genuine megaton. As it stands, there's a high risk that it'll prove to be a damp squib. Also, I really would like to see how many performance issues these ports have. Xbox Originals had quite a few issues.

Well I am gonna go ahead and say what they said 10 years ago with different people at the top might not apply... Gonna look at this with a positive attitude because it is cool they even are making an effort.
