Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

I think it's pretty huge. Anything that brings more people into current-gen consoles is a good thing overall.

It's smart on Microsoft's part. If a 360 player is trying to decide between moving to an XBox One or a PS4 and the XBox One will play their old games too, it's a huge selling point.

If Sony announced backwards compatibility as well then it wouldn't be such a big deal in the big picture, but as it stands it's a huge selling point considering how similar the two consoles are otherwise.

I was barely interested in a Xbone until this was announced.

Once the details are ironed out, I'll definitely be purchasing soon.

I think they almost certainly just recompiled the games in x86 based on the list. It's going to take a lot of time and resources to convert games if that's what they are doing.

It could be software emulation as well but I'm still doubtful that the XB1 hardware can emulate the 360.

If they are x86 versions of the games I hope they bring this program to Windows 10 store in the future. Whether that's a year or five away idk
 
This also explains why there's no port of SMB . Game is already 1080p60fps on the 360, correct? No real point on making a port with this.

I know the difference between native and software BC but...what is the difference between recompiling and software BC?
 
Wow. And here was I thinking it was the best thing at their conference this year. I must be backwards too.

Makes sense coming from that idiot that thought people bought video game consoles to watch TV.

Reminds me of when they said the DRM was deeply embedded in the system, you can't just turn it off by flipping a switch, and then the turned if off by flipping a switch.
 
LOL no way in hell, its just not worth the effort. 1000% chance it's a software emulator.

I am going with this.

The One is more than capable to emulating the 360 in software. Especially since it is already coded close to the metal being a console (PC's still have yet to, and once DX12 comes to PC's this will make emulators achieve their goals when upgraded as well).

Remember, the 360 was 512MB of ram, with a 10 year old GPU set.
 
So how do I get this to work? Don't see any of my 360 games in my Xbox One list. I'm in the preview program, but it says no updates are out.

Says who? Just because it isn't available on Day One doesn't mean that it won't be made available.


That is a much smaller selection than I was hoping for.

This is a Day One Preview list. If there is to be 100 titles by Christmas, do you really expect all 100 to be available for the preview program today?!? They will add games over the next weeks and months until they go public with it this holiday season. Have some patience, please.

If there is zero effort from a pub, that would mean MS has source code for all games?
 
Although the collection is small it's great that Microsoft is allowing backwards compatibility.

From the list I'll replay Mass Effect this Christmas it looks like!
 
I have to say this was something I didn't see happening but I welcome it with open arms. I'm so glad to see there being some love given to Backward compatibility. This is a feature that consoles should have anymore.
 
So it works with discs, but it has to be a game on their list? My current 360 gives me nothing but DRE's now, so it's nearly impossible to play games (I have a very early 360 with very little hard drive space) on it.
 
I got all excited until I saw that publishers have to approve the process. There's no way they will given the current climate of HD remakes. There's a reason the very few games currently on the list are MS games or games they could easily get approval for.

NCAA Football 14 will not be added...which makes this a non-feature for me.
 
A point most seem to be ignoring.

Another point is they don't need to get to that number... what MS want is just PR the "fact" it has BC to the press... If it really works or have 100ish games is irrelevant. The marketing line "Xbox One has BC" that matter..

The 360 used a PowerPC based CPU and the XB1 uses x86. They are two different software languages.

Native would mean that you pop the disc in and the XB1 would understand and read the game. Software BC would mean that they wrote an emulator in x86 in order to read and play 360 games. I don't think the system is powerful enough to do that.

A recompile would mean they would go in and literally recode the game in x86 format. They would have to do this game by game and it wouldn't be easy or cheap but that seems to be what they are doing. The benefit to this would be they would all be Windows 10 compatible as well.
