Was shaking my head listening to them after the show lol.

They're acting as if the lack of third party games this year is a huge catastrophe. And in doing so, are also acting as if the PS4 hasn't already sold 23 million consoles or whatever it's sold. What are people going to be playing? I don't know, the millions of third party games maybe?

I love these guys but damn what a downer.

Huh? They got excited about plenty of games this e3. Mario Maker, ReCore, Rare Replay, Horizon, Fallout 4, and more. Just because they're talking realistically about the conferences doesn't mean they're not excited about games.

....but that short Final Fantasy 7 CGI trailer, a remake of a game I'm not sure any of them actually liked that much in the first place. Why aren't they losing their shit over that?

I will agree that they seem to be WAY overplaying the importance of first parties in the PS4's case, since well...that hasn't really stopped the PS4 from selling a lot thus far.

You have a really odd definition of catastrophe.

Let look at big game
The last guardian: outside of it actually being a thing it was pretty what we knew that the game was and it didn't look better than it the 2009 trailer
FF7
A game that not even a game that won't come out until 2017
Shenmus 3
A game that not even a game but a kick starter of a game that should have came out a decade ago which was groundbreaking than but now isn't

It was a cool press conference but I can why they not super excited for it

I think my only problem is nobody is arguing anymore. There is no counter-arguing at all. It becomes boring and nothing of value is had if they all just agree with each other. Dan has done this well with nintendo in the past few months, but today he has said nothing really. Then again he could just not care about anything shown.

Now see I agree with you that they seem weirdly adamant that the PS4 needs first party stuff when it is the most popular platform for the third party stuff. But you gotta understand that from their perspective, with access to all the consoles, they want something to stand out, and there's not much standing out this year for the PS4 that you can't get anywhere else.

For people who aren't in that situation though, it's a very weird complaint.

This I agree with. I don't think it matters that much. Especially this holiday when the two biggest games are going to have PS4 branding all over them.

I do think outside of sales first party stuff does matter for the lifeblood of a gaming console and do somewhat justify the existence of consoles going forward.

Yeah, it's super weird. And it's not like Microsoft's first party offerings this year are any better. Halo 5, Forza 6 and Rare Replay.

Brad says now Sony have to worry about Steam not just beating MS. I just hope they can get thru 2015 without the PS4 crumbling under the weight of hordes of consumers buying Steam machines and PCs.

Why would PS4 hardware sales actually matter to them, and what does it have to do with their reaction to a SONY press conference?

Mmm i'm not sure that's how you should look at it. They're not talking about it from a business perspective, they're talking about it from a consumer perspective. A consumer will watch a Sony conference to see what games Sony has, where as multiplats can be shown anywhere. Sony selling another million consoles doesn't do anything for me, I don't make that money, I care about the games I can play. Being shown Batman is not what I want to watch the Sony conference for, I want to see Sony exclusives, I want the conference to focus on what differentiates Sony from Microsoft and Nintendo, not Batman and CoD.

They own all the consoles
They own a competent PC

This isn't like they only own a PS4 or only an Xbox One. They don't really care about multiplats, and the promise of games next year or the year after really isn't going to sway them that the leading months till December will have great exclusives to the PS4 from their 1st party studios. It's simply what it is, dunno why it's so hard for some people to understand that. This year Sony has an ok to average exclusive line up. Next year is when things start heating up, but it's fair to say that this year isn't as great.

I can't wait until Half-Life 3 is announced to a chorus of "Oh well, we knew it was coming eventually." "It's not out yet, so why be excited?"

Alex: The fact that Valve has caved into their fans and made this game is troubling!

Brad: I only care about DOTA 2.

Jeff: I don't like Half Life 2 so I don't care.

Makes me wonder how much 7 minutes of airtime with hundreds of thousands of people watching is really worth.

I mean... if people wanted more Shenmue so bad, why did 2 sell so poorly? I'm confused as to where the audience is even coming from

also how are they going to make a Shenmue game for $2m? didn't the first one cost like $70m?

It's really weird how people want gaming journalists and personalities to 'hype up' or be 'excited' about gaming news. That's literally the opposite of what you should want.

Giant Bomb has always been honest with everyone. Their personal biases are always going to exist as they do in critics of other mediums.

ETA: Oh yeah, they're also probably fucking exhausted after being in front of and talking to cameras for 10 hours.

Or maybe it's because half of them are secretly watching a pro wrestling stream on their laptops during the conference?

Shenmue is almost at a million already lol.

It'll be instantly funded and I think there was little risk of that not happening.

Why Sony doesn't just fund Shenmue 3 themselves instead of doing this little Kickstarter test I don't really know; they can certainly afford it. Though free money from people is free money, might as well take it if people are willing to give it.

There's no counter-arguing in this thread. Just a lot of typing the word "cynicism" and calling them grumpy and tired. They brought up several valid points that are all worth discussing, I don't see what the problem is.

is there a segment by segment recap of both major stage shows?

I side more with Xbox, but as unbiased as I can frame this, I dont see how sony won by such a landslide like some people are saying?

realistically even "the big 3" TLG, FFVII, Shenmue on paper dont seem to be "megatons" like what I thought they would be.

Only one of those is a true exclusive and 1 is a kickstarter game?

This is where it got good, lol.

One, they ARE beating MSFT.

Two, doesn't MSFT have to worry about PC's too over the Box?

There better not be a jeep scene.

"That's some Half-Life-Ass Half-Life."

To be fair, they were pretty ho-hum on that too. Everyone's opinion of Halo 5 was pretty meh, Jeff seemed a little interested in Forza, and the most hyped they got was when Dan heard that Rare collection had RC Pro Am, Brad heard it had Viva Pinata, and Jeff heard that he had another chance to shit on Battletoads.

I'm just really confused as to why people would watch a 2 hour conference with giantbomb talking over it if they don't like the way giantbomb is. There are hundreds of other streams going on so why not watch one of those and be happy?

But this would be the correct reaction?

Dan's had a long day but he's also not going to be the guy to die on a cross to get his opinion over like Brad or Patrick might. He's ultimately too carefree and it doesn't seem to get to him. It's one of the things I like most about him honestly. He also probably has a lot of respect for the opinions of his co-workers.

Balance to the panel would have been nice. It was pretty much Jeff & Brad poopooing on things, Austin and Vinny being reasonable and Dan & Alex chiming in once in awhile.

What we needed was energetic Dan or Danny to counter a few things and share other perspectives.

I'm not keen on FF7 or Shenmue but I wouldn't go out of my way to say that it shouldn't exist.

Crap. I had to pause just as the Sony conference ended, and I tried to resume to watch the the post show and my browser crashed. Now I can't go back into the stream, says it's over. Yet the other conferences are available. I guess it's not archived right on youtube or something right now. Anyone seeing the same thing?

oh wait you're right it doesn't work. Give it a few minutes.

They weren't wrong with some of their criticisms but I think they were over exaggerating the first party situation on ps4. Losing Uncharted makes the fall pretty bare, but id rather Sony spaced out its first party over the year than save everything for the last few months. If Sony had held Bloodborne for the fall as well we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

I'm watching Danny's reaction from the end of the conf. It's... markedly different.

I guess Danny must be a fanboy for being excited about something.
