Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

From my very brief time with Geometry Wars, the emulation is impressive to me. I mean, it's an impressive feat regardless, but it seems less rough-edged than I expected.

Maybe I'll lag test Geo Wars this weekend if someone else doesn't.

Is there an NDA for any of the preview program stuff? We definitely need some Game DVR videos and screenshots of people playing if there isn't one in place.

My games list? You mean my achievements online? I have played over 1200 360 games so .. finding it might be tough.

I do a search or Hexic HD and nothing under Xbox One.. only 360. I most certainly owned it.

I am also missing Geo Wars 2... all my games were bought under this account which I have had since the 2001 Live beta.

I posted this a few pages back. You need to 'purchase' Hexic HD:

A link to Hexic HD in the store for those who never bought the game because it came pre-installed on the console. It's free.

Also, Geo Wars 2 and Small Arms appear to not be populating right now. I own both and they are not in my queue.

There is nothing that "obviously" indicates the code was re-compiled. Until someone pulls a container and disassembles it all we have are guesses and interview comments.

Based on the latter, it is emulation, with each game running in its "own" 360. Re-compiling is a FAR cry from zero effort.
This is my theory as well. Each game we download is actually its own 360 VM (hence the x64 build info) with the original game ROM (and patches) self-contained.

I tried out Toy Soldiers and was not happy with all the audio popping I heard. Plenty of time to work out the kinks but thats not a good start.

Fuck every other announcement, THIS is what will get me to get an X1.

I'm going to have to wait for them to expand that list of working titles though because out of that initial list I only have Mass Effect 1 and I also have it for PC.

In "my games and apps", under "Games", go to the right until you see the "ready to install" and it should be there. If you have it digitally on 360.

Right.. I did that and got about 8 of my 360 games.. but a few are missing. I certainly own Hexic HD and Geo Wars 2...

Awesome.. thanks for this tip.. was wondering if the fact that this came free on the original HDD was an issue. Still not sure what is up with Geo Wars 2.. when you go to buy it.. just click Buy.. even with price there and it says... "Previously Bought" hope that triggers it.

hexic HD showed up but not Geo Wars 2 yet... humm

I tried that, too. The missing games haven't populated yet.

So, I go to start Banjo-Kazooie, and it asks me to download a profile before I can play, so I do it and then it says can't connect, then I hit test connection and it crashes the game. Anyone know what to do?

You can get into the Preview Program by invites?! Can anybody spare an invite please? I literally didn't know till now but I've always wanted to become a Preview Program member ever since it started. Dumb of me but I always thought that you could only get in by a special e-mail from Microsoft only. :(

GT: ShinRekka

Very grateful and much much thanks if anybody gives me one!

Although I was mildly excited when I first heard this announcement, I've come to realize that I'm not all that interested in revisiting my old 360 library.

I downloaded Geometry Wars Retro Evolved, N+, Super Meat Boy, and Zuma's Revenge--the only digital games currently available that I own. The process was painless enough, though not exactly quick. After fooling around with Geometry Wars and N+ however, the nostalgia I'd been feeling all this time for these old gems dissipated. These games aren't quite as charming or as addictive as I remember.

I'm still holding out for Shadow Complex, Lumines Live, Hydro Thunder, and Mass Effect 2--some of my favourites, but this would have been so much more impactful had it been announced 2 years ago.

how do i open the guide once I'm playing a 360 game? playing alien hominid HD and cant figure it out... tried the view button already

This is pretty awesome, kinda hoping bayonetta gets put on the BC list.

If anyone could spare an invite that'd be pretty awesome, Gamertag is NintendoRev

I can invite people.

Gamertag is the same as here. I'm going to bed now so everyone who wants one send me a *message* and I'll do them all in one swoop tomorrow.

EDIT, Please read: A fair few people have messaged me here on GAF. That's fine, but I should clarify that it's much easier for me to do them in bulk if you message me on Xbox, and it means I can't get mixed up letting people know that it's done. It doesn't matter who you are on GAF, I'll invite you. Anyone reading this edit, please message me on Xbox and not GAF.

View + List, Start + Back for those more familiar with the old names

Does anyone see this really affecting sales? I was arguing with a friend about this but I don't really see the bulk of casual gamers still sitting on 360's being swayed by this (if they are even aware of it).

Hexic HD probably came with your harddrive, you didn't purchase the game.

No NDA for the preview program. Here are some of my shots of BattleBlock Theatre

It runs perfectly for me so far. I did have it crash once to the dashboard while booting up the game.

I'm also curious to see if games are using the Xbox One scaler vs the 360 one.

We need to vote for Spelunky and XCOM Enemy Within. Way too low they are.

EDIT: and Alpha Protocol.. I guess this could go on forever of me finding games needing votes.

"Small Arms" is on the compatibility list and I own it digitally but it's not showing up in my list to install. All the others did except that one.

Everything I know about emulation says this shouldn't be possible. Would love to know how this is being pulled off. Amazed.

I had the same issue. None of my "ready to install" games were listed, even my Xbox One demo's and such that normally sit there under the ready to install were not showing up. But after about 15 min, I went back and they all showed up. I also between this turned on my 360 and needed an update, so not sure if that was forcing them to show up under the One, but as stated, I did not even have my Xbox One games/demo's showing up but now they are. Mass Effect is almost done.

I played some Kameo and looks great. I switched and played it on 360 and other than perhaps a slightly cleaner picture, they are pretty much identical. It just seemed to me that the game under the 360 had a little more jaggies, but on the One it seemed a little cleaner, still jaggies but not as pronounced as when playing direct on the 360. Outside of that, it seems 100% identical, you even get the 360 logo swoosh animation when you load a game. Very impressive so far.

Given that both the Xbox One and PS4 use fairly standard PC tech, is it fair to assume the next generation of consoles will have better BC which is easier to implement? Nothing against Microsofts efforts. This is great news for the Xbox One but I'd love to see the next round of consoles with native BC.

BC was not a big deal when it was the norm, why is it suddenly now a big thing?

Does the XB1 upscale the old games? Will performance be better? If yes to either of those 2 questions, then yes, its a cool addition.

If it is just "Play 360 games on XB1" I don't see this as a big deal at all.

Well I wouldn't expect 360 games to be optimized for Xbox One. Honestly though I'd be happy with games just working properly without bugs, visual glitches, audio stuttering etc.

BC is one of those things that really shouldn't be a big deal. It should be standardized. You have to look back on the PS3's Cell architecture and wonder why Sony even bothered. In the long run it's costing them. If they had used a more mainstream approach in the design of the PS3, they wouldn't have anything to worry about. As it stands right now, Microsoft has a very important feature that isn't offered by competitors. Kudos to them.

How is this thing going to deal with DLC?

If it is just using an emulator inside a container, DLC could just be downloaded from within the virtual Xbox360 and saved inside the container.

As far as the game and DLC would know, it would be no different than how it works on a real system.

Please let me finish play & finish Skyrim, Far Cry 3, and Witcher 2 on my Xbox One and I'll never say anything bad about MIcrosoft ever again. I promise.
