Horizon: Zero Dawn Trailer (Guerrilla, post-apocalyptic pre-historic adventure)

Probably because they're huge and have very limited ammo when taken off of a machine.

Did every scientist on earth die? Hell, even random people have been able to recreate weapons without any sort of advanced knowledge of the mechanics or principles at play in the real world.

It's going to be interesting to see how they answer this one, because it definitely stuck out to me as very odd.

This works as well as it does because they're treating it as seriously as they can. If they were winking at it, or joking about it, I wouldn't be half as interested as I am. It's exactly the tone I wanted to see based on the concept art.

I've rarely if ever seen a game that treats a premise as ridiculous and questionable as this with such seriousness ever succeed storytelling wise. That is my concern and the reveal trailer with its dialogue and narrative cliches doesnt give me much hope they are going to be amongst the few that have.

Gameplay wise the game looks great and the world looks great to explore. I just think I will find myself having a hard time following the story if the trailer is an indication of their direction.

This makes no sense. Most video game characters are stronger than average people of their genders. Nathan Drake, Snake, Batman, Corvo from Dishonoured, Sam from Splinter Cell, etc. But these are not your average people. Drake is the luckiest man alive, Snake and Sam are highly trained soldier, Batman has also done lots of training and Corvo is a magic assassin. What is wrong if a female filled these roles? The luckiest woman alive, a highly trained female soldier and a magic female assassin should also be capable of these incredible things. It wouldn't make sense if they weren't.

It makes sense to me if you compare the best boxer, fighter, basketball player and mma to the best female counterpart in real life they would be demolished.

Am I the only one wondering why they're using bows and arrows and spears when there are perfectly good rocket launchers and laser guns just up for grabs? That is going to take one hell of explanation.

Not really

This is a game. A game.
Too many games these days have to ground themselves to reality. Fuck that. If you want to go batshit insane with an awesome concept then do it. The crazier the betterZ

It seems pretty clear its classic matrix... We made self replicating AI and at some point it decided we had to go. Or "The old ones" are jacked into the dinos living in a VR/sim unaware there are "freemen/women" wandering the surface.

They did have stuff like explosive and electric arrows.

I spotted this in the trailer:

I bet you could go to it since it seems to be actually rendered and moving forward.

Looking similar to this:

Some helghast AI is my bet lol :D

Oh man, that was some AI @_@

Edit: Woops ignore the silly spotting thing. Forwarded in the trailer for gifs and then forgot I saw them on stream earlier.

Im imagining its just been so long and humanity came so close to dying that they are just primitive people who are still intelligent but surrounded by technology they dont quite understand.

Finding an explosive device and strapping it on an arrow tip looks like it makes sense in this world.

Reverse engineering a death ray cannon does not. At least for the tribe the main character is in.

Simple answer: Culture. Many aspects of warfare, hunting, gathering, etc in tribal organisation is based heavily on customs. It seems they live off the land and craft their own weapons which in many tribal bands is a rite of passage, as soon as she picks up that rex's rocket launcher though...

Ok, but Ronda Rousey would fuck your shit up and most mens shit up as well.

What is the problem with a game starring a Ronda Rousey level protagonist?

Yes maybe on a physical level Anderson Silva would beat her but that doesnt dismiss the fact Ronda Rousey would fuck up 99% of people on this planet in the ring. Men or woman.

Now add weapons like guns and bows into the mix and a Ronda Rousey that is also a expert marksmen would be one of the most lethal people on the planet.

People who complain about the chattering obviously never played Dragon's Dogma, or worse, Xenoblade Chronicles. Compared to those games, Aloy's mutterings are nothing, haha.

Considering games like Uncharted that probably inspired others developers to have their protagonist think aloud most of the time it makes me wonder why Horizon would get flak for it. I bet if the protagonist was a mute those same people would have a heart attack.

There's just no pleasing some people.

Lol, people criticizing it for having robots now? What?

Some people are still in the "dude bro era". A era where difference is the ultimate blasphemy.

I think you're perfectly within your right to want to play a guy instead. Still, it's a game, there's no real reason for there to be a physical disparity between the sexes in a world inhabited by robot dinosaurs.

Boy, I can see we're in the middle of one heckuva debate here.

This looks really good and fun. Way more excited for this than the dream trio. But it's Guerrilla, so I'm really worried. Never liked any of their past games. Plus this seemed too scripted.

Fallout New Vegas lead writer. Witcher 3 quest designer (and a number of other Witcher 3 vets). They've had their weak areas in the past but they've made a clear effort to improve in them.

Easy. Non-dino robot tech doesn't work due to EMPs or a similar effect. It's how the robots took out the humans - the world went dark, remember? Bypassing the disabling field or whatever is too high level to reverse engineer, so any tech is just rejiggered dinobot parts.

Plus culture doesn't automatically move towards advanced technology, so they just might not want to. Culture doesn't have a direction. If people are surviving they generally stick with it.

Holy shit, I forgot they hired the New Vegas writer. And I didn't hear about the Witcher vets.

God dammit. GOD DAMMIT.

This game is going to be the best.

I've keep going back to who or what makes these robots. Some in the trailer look a lot like elk (or deer). If i were an evil AI keeping and or making these things, why would I make ones that look like that? Why not all super vicious things like the trex kind or they could defend themselves? Lol I know, logic in a video game, I just want to know more about the story

In real life? Perhaps. But in video games, the protagonist typically faces weak grunt enemies that they mow down without difficulty, not trained MMA fighters. Also, she is using weapons that can do damage no matter who is holding it. You're acting like she did some super human stuff in this demo. I guess her aim was good? You should also remember that she is not your average person. She lives in a world ruled by robot dinosaurs so she must be strong to survive - survival of the fittest. In any case, it is a fantasy video game - characters commonly look stronger than they appear.

Not evil. Just synthetic life propagating itself.

I'm really excited about this.

And while I'm getting kinda burnt out on GG's so-so efforts with Killzone, I'd love to see one more attempt with some better level design and narration. Basically, I want gamplay and level design closer to Killzone 2, but with a narrative and production values closer to the Last of Us.

I wonder if the some of the new guys they hired for Horizon would be willing to work on that IP after it ships. =(

The fact we are already speculating about the situation between humans and the dinobots and why humans don't have better technology shows Guerilla are nailing the concept already

Well one thing to think about is did all the animals go extinct to be replaced by the robo dinos?

Maybe that's why they are made like herbivores and stuff. Kinda like how there's a food chain. Each bots are specialized in a field like harvesting, warfare, reconnaissance and other stuff

That is part of my sticking point, for a story that is striving for a serious tone and a serious story it is hard to swallow the initial set up. I feel like it is going to require a lot of leaps in logic and a high level of suspension of disbelief to work for me.

Because there are different classes of machines that have different roles in their society. Trex is the enforcer, elk are harvesters (probably of some energy source), and the small ones are sentries. It's not really efficient to have every robot be a jack of all trades.
