It's not gonna happen. Considering the evolution of modern RPG combat and popularity of games like Dark Souls, it's most likely going to be action-oriented. Nomura directing basically seals the deal

... Yeah, they're going to turn it into an ARPG. Right. Because that's what we're all looking for in the most wanted remake in Square Enix history -- them to completely toss out the old game and redo it.

If anything, Nomura directing suggests we won't see this until the PS5 comes out. :P

This is amazing ahhaa!!!!!

Next Xenogears!!

2018 #believe.

When do we start the twitter campaign?

Listen, if we're gonna get Xenogears, I want them to go to Episode VI or start with Episode I. (Xenogears is Ep. V in a six part series)

Then I feel like his upper arms should be thinner, too.
Arms don't just...shrink halfway down like that.

I swear I'm not trying to nitpick, it just looks really bizarre to me.

Like, I'm imagining him taking that thing off to sleep and he's got some kind of baby arm thing goin' on.

He skipped wrist day

We'd pretty much have to make Square buy Monolithsoft back lol

a proper Episode I would be mind blowing.

In accordance with the theory of infinite parallel universes, there are a nigh-infinite number of alternate realities in which this is a real thing.

And that breaks me.

Given the circumstances I expected this to be exclusive. It's a nice surprise that I'll probably be able to play it on PC.

Anyway, I wonder how much they will change mechanically. FF7 had a rather interesting system already, but I'd really like if they (optionally?) sped up the flow of battles.

Every RPG ever should have the Bravely Default system where you can speed combat up as well as set random encounter rates in the options.

Can you imagine this being released on January 31, 2017. Exactly 20 years after the original.

List of reactions from around the internet:

So many of these reactions start with "no, no, no" -- begging Square not to disappoint them again. It's uncanny.

You guys are killing me with Action RPG talk. If hey change the combat system I will lose my fucking shit.

I completely agree. Not everything needs to be an Action-RPG, especially a remake for a game that was originally Turn-Based.

People want an action-RPG? They can pick FFXV or KHIII instead.

Use FFX-2 ATB system pls, and do little tweak so you can time your attack to "counter" your enemies

I think that would be nice compromise rather than made the game goes total action route

Don't worry, just because you have an infinite set of something, doesn't mean that every possibility is represented. For example, there are an infinite amount of numbers between 1 and 2, but none of them are greater than 3. Feel better now?

What?! They're really doing it?

...With Nomura directing I wonder how long development will actually take. It'll be interesting to see what stays and what is changed as development proceeds.

you know what, they should do a kickstarter for this

and watch it explode

I would sell it all. Start again anew. Know the simple bliss that is a life without possessions. All to fund this project.

...

Weirdly, yeah, yeah, I think I do actually.

FF VII-R, The Last Guardian, and Shenmue 3. Also this year and next... a new Shadowrun, a new Syndicate (Satellite Reign), and a new Deus Ex.... now, also a new Mass Effect... if we could just get Matsuno to make a new Tactics Ogre from the Ogre Battle Saga, I'd likely begin sacrificing some goats or donating to a church. Wiz news, chummers.

I don't know if you were referring to my post, but when I was talking about optionally speeding up battles I didn't mean turning it into an action game. Just speeding up the resolving of actions, e.g. have alternative shorter animations for everything.
