Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

i checked you need the disk to play the game i tried to take it out while playing and it stopped immediately.

edit: also the list is incomplete i can play both kefling games, alien hominoid and n+ and toy soliders. (all of these were downloaded)

=cyberheater;168250658]Technically. How is this possible?

according to them your running an entire 360 on your XB1 to play these games, they say the only reason they don't have more games is because of licensing

How do achievements work exactly with this and digital games? If I have castlevania can I just download it to the One and it just boots up and works? And then Achievements will pop up like normal?

Yea, as it would as a 360 game. It won't pop Xbox One toasts.

played banjo kazooie and the achievements pop up like they do on 360

Yes, they just emulate the compete Xbox 360 UI.

So you earn 360 achievements as you always have.

I just played the game before and have 150 / 1000 gamerscore for this game you just add to that.

Unlocked achievements are still unlocked and cannot be unlocked again.

It's normal Xbox 360 achievements tied to your normal 360 achievement list, that pop like normal. No double dipping or anything either. They include a stripped down version of the 360 guide, complete with the Achievements section, parties, messaging, etc.

Keep in mind, yo're not installing anything off the disc, you're downloading the entire thing from Xbox Live. The disc is simply a key

Very good point! I wonder if they are using some of the old DRM code for this? Or will it be that I can install the same disc on another drive? I'm at work but will try playing without the disc when I get home if nobody beats me to it.

Edit*

There it is. Shame, but we can't really complain.

You need disc in drive to play (unless digital).

I already expected this would technically be possible after Harmonix announced that you can transfer your Rock Band DLC between the two consoles, which already confirmed that digital content can be transferred between Xbox 360 and Xbox One, but I never expected discs to work.

You'll need the disc to play once it's installed. It's where the license would be stored if you don't own it digitally.

Are you able to transfer save data from the 360 to One?

If the game supports cloud saves, yes. I think Super Meat Boy is the only game that doesn't support it right now.

Think of it exactly like installing an Xbox One physical game. You can pop it into any console you want, even a million different ones and install it a million different times. But it can only be played with the disc in

This is really puzzling me in terms of how they did it. Even if you have to recompile, what about the games that were optimized with specific 360 HW tricks in mind? Those weak jaguar cores can't possibly emulate the PPC CPU...

Crazy.

Wonder how many months they worked on this emulation. Massive props to MS tech team but hey they created Windows Virtual PC so they know their shit.

A company called Transitive invented the technology back in 2007. They were Manchester University computer science students. They patented it, and sold it to IBM. It's also used in Apple Mac's, to run old PowerPC applications on Intel processsors.

Source: I went for a job interview with them, and my NDA expired.

Do people really believe this?

Did BC make the PS3 sell like mad when it had it?

Do people really spend a bunch of money to gain the ability to play games they already had?

I definitely remember "PS3 has no games" people mocking those who talked about how big the PS2 library was.

If the BC was universal (I.e. Played every 360 game right now) then I could see it encouraging 360 owners to upgrade, reassured that they can safely trade in their 360s but still play their favourite 360 games. I expect those would mostly be people that would be likely Xb1 buyers eventually, but it may speed that up.

Sounds like they're recompiling the games then, rather than emulation on the fly. He said if you insert a 360 disc it will then download the game.

You've connected two different things. The download is for HDD times - the few things you have to account for (e.g. Blu-Ray reading DVD) the less you have to emulate.

Ha, never knew that. Thanks for the info.

Did you get that job BTW?

Why do the developers have to approve each game before Microsoft can make it available? I don't think that's something that had to be done with the OG Xbox emulation on 360. Why would licensing matter when we already own the games on 360? I'm just mad that I may never get Outrun and After Burner because of this.

Also, what happens when you put in that XBLA disc that used to come with 360s and had geometry wars? I think it was called Xbox Live Unplugged

It is more than that.

My son has been playing online 360 games with his friends for a year. One of them recently had a breakage on their 360 and his father upgraded him to Xbox One. Now he cannot play with my son and their other friend. With this announcement, it will be possible, tiding my son over till Xmas when he will get his upgrade. Then there is the bonus of his additional digital games he has been getting for free - he retains them on his X1 and so does his friends. His third friend was ready to jump to PS4. But being able to play with them still on 360 will no doubt encourage him to stay put and eventually buy into X1.

BC is encouraging people to make the jump and making it easier to do so. It bloody amazing. It's more than about selling systems - it's about people buying into the ecosystem and staying there.

By the way
does Xbox 360 emulation mean I can play xbox original titles(because xbox 360 allowed to do as far as I heard) on xbox one?

If so....then does that mean that XBOX has become ONE? One Xbox for all? lol All Might Xbox?

Licenses and such. Stuff like music, thrid party software solutions or likenesses of a person may only be available for distribution for so many years and be tied to certain criteria. They would need to OK it so they're not hit with some sort of infringement.

This must be direct emulation of the entire game OS?

Played Toy Soldiers this morning, had quite a few 360 titles sitting waiting to be installed

Old gamesave still there, leaderboards and multiplayer all intact, achievements pop like normal, I even unlocked a gamerpic.

Colour me impressed, look forward to more titles.

I did not! I got through to second interview but totally botched it during a practical session. It was a while ago, though, and ultimately they sold the technology to IBM so I probably would have lost my job.

The tech is crazy. They, in real time, translate PowerPC to x64. Full CPU emulation across processor type. Here's the Mac version: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta_(software)

I'll eat my hat if this is still straight up hardware emulation, but if they managed that I wanna see the fucking technical documentation because that is insane. But because they're handling all BC through digital titles (discs just prompt you to download the digital version) there is going to be some distribution rights nonsense to deal with because Microsoft can't just give away that software.

I still can't believe this is works without recompiling the games in same fashion. Otherwise it makes zero sense to force people to download digital versions of the game, if they can use the HDD from the Xbox One as a 360 HDD they have to still have access to the disc drive.

It would be nice if you could actually run the main Xbox 360 dashboard as well. Would make buying games a lot easier, especially if they don't fix the issue where you can't currently use Xbox credit on the web store
