EDIT: Appears not to be "hacking" but knowledge of passwords. Fluid situation obviously.

New York Times said:
WASHINGTON — The F.B.I. and Justice Department prosecutors are investigating front-office officials for the St. Louis Cardinals, one of the most successful teams in baseball over the past two decades, for hacking into the internal networks of a rival team to steal closely guarded information about player personnel.

Investigators have uncovered evidence that Cardinals officials broke into a network of the Houston Astros that housed special databases the team had built, according to law enforcement officials. Internal discussions about trades, proprietary statistics and scouting reports were compromised, the officials said.

The officials did not say which employees were the focus of the investigation or whether the team’s highest-ranking officials were aware of the hacking or authorized it. The investigation is being led by the F.B.I.’s Houston field office and has progressed to the point that subpoenas have been served on the Cardinals and Major League Baseball for electronic correspondence.

The attack represents the first known case of corporate espionage in which a professional sports team has hacked the network of another team. Illegal intrusions into companies’ networks have become commonplace, but it is generally conducted by hackers operating in foreign countries, like Russia and China, who steal large tranches of data or trade secrets for military equipment and electronics.

Major League Baseball “has been aware of and has fully cooperated with the federal investigation into the illegal breach of the Astros’ baseball operations database,” a spokesman for baseball’s commissioner, Rob Manfred, said in a written statement.

Hacking Astros would make a great username.

yooooooo, this is pretty huge. What the fuck, Cards? That's some Patriot-type shit. If true, they better be punished severely.

RBI-Gate.
WHIP-Gate.
Metric stats-Gate.

As a Reds fan, I don't doubt the Cardinals are cheating. I think they tried to overclock Albert Pujols and that's why he left.

Looks like some Cardinals may soon become...

*puts on sunglasses*

jailbirds.

LIke it's the cards too. I would picture the Astros spying on the Cards, but the other way around? lol

Also ... screw the Cards. Sorry Opiate.

Are you fucking kidding me Cardinals? Baseball is the only great thing this city has, and now I have to watch every game knowing that we are cheaters. I really hope this isn't true, because that'll suck all the fun out of this season for me.

Wow, despite them being rivals of the Astros I never disliked the Cards. If this is true they need to be fucking crushed.

Is that how they cracked Kershaw all those times?

Too bad they couldn't get over the Giants...Silicon Valley built defenses too stronk.

Wow, stunning, my favorite team in sports.

Investigators believe Cardinals officials, concerned that Mr. Luhnow had taken their idea and proprietary baseball information to the Astros, examined a master list of passwords used by Mr. Luhnow and the other officials who had joined the Astros when they worked for the Cardinals. The Cardinals officials are believed to have used those passwords to gain access to the Astros’ network, law enforcement officials said.

Seriously?

Exactly. I need more of your kind in the MLB thread. Join me. We can talk about how miserable our season is.

I see the reason listed, but seriously, it's the fucking Astros. Even if they stole valuable information, let them, they need all the help they can get.

Also, I guess it's time I finally accept the Cardinal's as their position of the evil empire within baseball. Might as well go full-steam with it. Someone mod my avatar in an interesting way related to this scandal please.

Who needs all the help they can get? The Cardinals have the best record in baseball.

I don't even like baseball but their fans are so damn insufferable that this made me laugh. I can't wait to see how Cardinals fans spin this into an example of them doing things the "right way".

No, its beyond patriots style shit. Nothing the patriots have been caught doing is illegal in the court of law. This is illegal activity that's going to land someone or multiple someone's in jail.

this doesn't even make sense. You're implying why hack the Astros, and then say they(the cardinals) need all the help they can get.

"We finally got it guys, we can finally figure out how Jeff Bagwell hit all those home runs with the weirdest batting stance of all time!"

*pours through files*

"Oh, it was steroids."

I don't know how it's even possible to be shocked by any news of this nature. In a highly competitive environment (
sports/business/life in general
), entities do whatever they can do get ahead. Many of those in MLB who will inevitably express shock and disgust at the news are already guilty of the same or similar. Perhaps it is cynical, but I don't know how anyone can view it as an unrealistic view.

Cardinals may still have the best fans on Earth...

wat.

It's not shocking, but this is the first documented case of its kind.
