I don't even like baseball but their fans are so damn insufferable that this made me laugh. I can't wait to see how Cardinals fans spin this into an example of them doing things the "right way".
Question, why are the fans so insufferable?

Damn that's crazy, seeing how they were division rivals, this is so dirty. At least the Astros are on the rise again, Springer, Correa, Altuve, feels good to have a competent team again.

Here's what was leaked in the hack if anyone is interested:

Also it seems that Luhnow, who used to be with the Cardinals, used the same password for the system he built in St. Louis and the one in Houston, lol.

Who needs all the help they can get? The Cardinals have the best record in baseball.

this doesn't even make sense. You're implying why hack the Astros, and then say they(the cardinals) need all the help they can get.

I see the reason listed, but seriously, it's the fucking Astros. Even if they stole valuable information, let them, they need all the help they can get.

Also, I guess it's time I finally accept the Cardinal's as their position of the evil empire within baseball. Might as well go full-steam with it. Someone mod my avatar in an interesting way related to this scandal please.

Sorry - people are misunderstanding my above post. The Cardinals allegedly hacked the Astros because the Cardinals believe the Astros stole information from them in the first place, per this quote:
Investigators believe Cardinals officials, concerned that Mr. Luhnow had taken their idea and proprietary baseball information to the Astros, examined a master list of passwords used by Mr. Luhnow and the other officials who had joined the Astros when they worked for the Cardinals. The Cardinals officials are believed to have used those passwords to gain access to the Astros’ network, law enforcement officials said.

So what I'm saying is, even if the Astros did steal the Cardinal's "proprietary baseball information," I'm saying, the Cardinals should let the Astros steal it because the Astros need all the help they can get.

Also, unsurprisingly, MLB.com has no mention of this yet. Anyway, the only thing I can hope for at this point, in order, is: 1) The allegations prove to not be true, 2) The allegations prove to be true but it was a single incident by a person acting independently, 3) oh god please tell me this is just a nightmare ;_;

Damn if you got the FBI and Justice department investigating your company you know they had some good tip off to make them go in.

You're mixing up two different things -- the Deadspin story was just the Astros' emails getting leaked. This is about the Cardinals going into the Astros systems and stealing proprietary information about player evaluation. Both are pretty bad -- and given today's news, there might be a link between the two -- but this is far, far more serious.

EDIT: Sorry, just read the newer Deadspin article -- they are linked, in that after the email breach...

MLB asked the FBI to look into the source of the leak after we published it. The bureau discovered that Ground Control “had been entered from a computer at a home that some Cardinals officials had lived in” which led to the investigation and today’s news.

That's...wow. Even if they did think Luhnow took info with him when he left, if they were that concerned about what he would bring, they shouldn't have given him permission to make the jump from one organization to the other.

We are a popular team, and remember that a certain percentage of every team's fans are assholes. The Cardinals have a lot of fans, so there are a lot of assholes Cardinal fans out there. You won't see many Cardinal fans defending the Cardinals organization for this, in fact I've only seen one or two fans who aren't embarrassed by this.

You do realize that the Astros are leading their division, right?

Historically, the Astros have been pretty bad. As far as most NL fans know, they're a bad team. Once they jumped to the AL, I'd say it's a safe thing to say that many fans of NL teams still think of the Astros as being just as bad as they were in the NL. That'll stick until the Astros have a strong playoff outing, IMO.

No, the things leaked are from their "Ground Control" online database, the same thing that the Cardinals are being investigated for hacking.

The Astros have been terrible because they've been in a rebuilding phase. I'd argue there would be no better time to try stealing info from them if you wanted to do that. They've been approaching the game from a completely different angle than a team that's been trying to win 'now'. That info might be very valuable to an evergreen team like the Cardinals.

(I'm a Cubs fan, I'm very familiar with the Astros)

Yes, but the emails (which is what Deadspin published) were just a small part of it.

yeah, so what am I mixing up? The leak was what prompted the MLB to ask the FBI to investigate, I know there was a lot more info than trade chatter on the system, and that the leaked info was a small part of it.

They're as bad as Patriot fans with the "patriot way" stuff, except they're somehow even crazier. They really think that they have the best organization in sports and will take every opportunity to let people know. I'm sure baseball fans have even more reasons to dislike them but that's what I've gotten from my brief interactions with them.

Now your just making shit up. They aren't a historically bad team, up until their world series appearance they had one of the better overall records in baseball since they and the mets came into MLB in 62. Its only been the last 5 years they've been tanking on purpose to get better picks.

Cards fan, born and raised, but I cannot stand the #BFIB stuff, and the "high and mighty" attitude that some of the fanbase has here.

If this ends up being true, then the Cards FO need to pay severely.

I agree completely.

I was actually okay with the "best fans in baseball" concept in, say, the late 90s, when it really manifested as just very positive behavior. I remember when the Cardinals fans gave Ken Griffey Jr. a standing ovation when he hit home run 500 at Busch; I was there. It was great. That sort of stuff is wonderful, in my opinion.

But now it seems to just be a moniker used to make Cardinals fans feel smug and special.

The Astros have had 1 World Series appearance in their entire history and never won a single World Series game. Maybe "bad" is too strong, but I'll still stick by my feelings that they're below average.

yooooooo, this is pretty huge. What the fuck, Cards? That's some Patriot-type shit. If true, they better be punished severely.
Where in the rulebook does it say that you can't hack other teams networks? This is just gamesmanship.
Just kidding, but this seems to be the go to excuse for teams caught cheating.
