Metroid Prime Federation Force Announced (Next Level, 3DS, 4 Player, Mission Based)

You know, I've always thought that a Federation co op spinoff would be a really neat twist.

But uh, while there were main games still coming out

And on console

And not.... chibi for no apparent reason.

I'm so sad. I just don't understand why Nintendo keeps pushing the series into directions that just don't fit what Metroid stands for. Yeah, I'm sure that Next Level will do a decent job, but Metroid is just not an action-packed coop shooter. Metroid doesn't have any interesting characters outside Samus and this is just not going to change.

Yeah, it's just a spin-off. But the word doesn't mean much when it's the first new Metroid game in half a decade.

Hey guys, remember when everyone was shitting on Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze when it first got announced?
Remember what happened when they actually came out?

True, but this unfortunately has the Metroid name on it so it's going to determine the future of the franchise. If Fed Force sells well, we'll get Fed Force 2 with promises of a proper new Metroid if that sells well. If Fed Force doesn't sell, then Metroid's dead. For good. Classic Capcpom Test Game scenario.

That's a bit of an overreaction. Metroid Prime Pinball did not determine the future of Metroid.

This is a cheap schedule filler farmed out to a decent studio, it is not their pitch for the next Metroid. I'm sure it will be a fun little game, it was just a terrible way to announce it. At least give us a real Metroid teaser and then 'while you wait' enjoy this funky spin-off. Nintendo are so tone-deaf sometimes.

Not really feeling the disappointment on this one. Next Level does good work, 4-player co-op Metroid Prime sounds like a nice concept. I think this is going to be a good game.

I'm also glad that Nintendo is making another attempt at expanding the Metroid universe.

Those were still real Mario and DKC games. This is an abomination to the Metroid name.

"First Metroid I'll skip" is what I wanted to write, but thinking about it, this isn't even Metroid in the first place. If you take Metroid and remove the basic gameplay concept, the atmosphere and even the main character, it's no longer Metroid. It's something entirely different just branded Metroid, and doing that was a really dumb idea. Even a Mario branding would have made more sense.

I think it would be getting a better reception if we weren't having a dry spell of good Metroid games since 2007. I mean, why they didn't release this alongside a 2D Metroid for 3DS is beyond me, as Wii U development is apparently dead at Nintendo (I fully expect Zelda to change platforms or be crossgen with NX).

There were other Metroid games coming out when Prime Pinball came out. Fed Forces is pretty much it for this franchise for the foreseeable future.

I've been wanting more games in the Metroid universe. While Samus is the best character ever, I've been very intrigued by the world it has.

Look at Star Wars: Republic Commando. That was a squad-based thinger and was fairly neat.

I really don't like the way this is looking at the moment. Not because I'm against non-Samus Metroid games, but this seems to be hitting corporate bullshittery on multiple levels:

-MULTIPLAYER YEAH THATS IN THESE DAYS
-Metroid "Prime"? The fuck does this have to do with Prime/Dark Samus? Their branding is so fucked up they can't even use the right title.
-"Blastball" is the cheesiest name.
-I am usually pretty down with the soft art style used in things like World of Warcraft and such, but they do not seem to be hitting it here.

As a Metroid fan, I'm actually pretty hurt by this.

It's like they are tone deaf. Every other indie game is a "metroidvania". Iga just raised $4 million or whatever it was by announcing he was making one. There is clearly something there. You'd get yourself a ton of goodwill by announcing a new Metroid proper and create so much buzz, especially if it's on Wii U.

You people aren't even giving it a fucking chance

Samus isn't even it it based on the trailer. The mainline games aren't going to be affected by this.

It's a missed opportunity. I always thought that a Metroid spinoff would work with GF soldiers and Samus being completely absent. It could become Nintendo's mainstream shooter series without affecting the mainline Metroid titles. But not on the 3DS and certainly not with ugly, super-deformed characters.

As I can only imagine the meltdown in the first pages of this thread, I don't care that this game bears the Metroid title at all.
It's clearly a new game, and although the license seems tacked on, it's not the end of the world.

As if anyone comes up to you and says "Hey, you seen that new Metroid game? More like Meh-troid, amirite? Lol your favorite game series sucks lol"

Seriously, get your act together.

I love seeing all these comments saying "OMG I DIDNT WANT THIS" "OMG DEATH OF METROID". really? didnt most of you have the same reaction with the first metroid prime? but now everyone praises the hell out of metroid prime. How about you guys give this game a chance it looks fun and im sure they are making a new metroid game for wii u but still early in development, its obvious that they still have interest in the franchise just gotta make sure they do it right. I feel as if this is just to hold us over for a bit, so calm down and stop over reacting.

I don't like how they're using Metroid IP here but this is developed by NLG? Color me very interested. They should announce the developers at the actual event.

It's Nintendo. I wouldn't assume that.

Zelda does, Luigi Mansion 2 does and I doubt this will do.

At least I was right about it being Next Level Games.

But this just looks like they were making gameplay prototypes and someone said, "Uh-oh. We don't have a new Metroid lined up. Can you tack on Metroid to this?"

Hahaha. You have got to laugh. I was in the camp where I wanted something Metroid. Just anything. And then Nintendo shows this. Hahahah.

I guess we won't see whatever Retro is cooking up until next year, and it'll probably be for NX. I get the impression that Nintendo doesn't want to spend the amount of money it'll take to create an epic Metroid on Wii U.

I mean it looks like it could be fun. But why do you need to call it Metroid? Do you really think this will appeal to Metroid fans? Honestly, sometimes nothing is better than something.

This looks really fun. Too bad that will be overshadowed by the fact that this isn't a "real" Metroid game, which is still a valid complaint. I'm not terribly bothered by it though, just because I think we'll get the Metroid game we all want eventually.

Hey guys, remember when everyone was shitting on Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze when it first got announced?

Yeah, this is exactly like that. Obviously this is a totally traditional Metroid game and we just don't know it yet.

And actually, no. I don't remember that. I remember mixed reactions, mostly because those games looked like samey to the ones immediately preceding them. This just looks like some four player shooter with a chibi Metroid skin, and nothing like an actual Metroid experience. Even if it's a great game it's still a disappointment as a Metroid game. Nothing they could reveal about it would change that.

Clearly Retro is up to SOMETHING and the fact that Nintendo isn't fully giving the reigns of he franchise to Next Level is reassuring. They get to make a fun-looking spinoff while the next title continues to be developed.
