Iwata tweets about the Digital Event reactions.

Yes,

FE and SMT x FE look bad in general.

Sorry but FE Fates looks like Awakening with a ton of content (and a hefty price tag) and SMTxFE is too early to call since we havent seen any gameplay yet (it will be out pretty soon though)
If you can seriously say the new FE looks bad then I'm not sure if you've been paying enough attention. Some of the "extra' stuff like base building isn't necessary, but they are making a lot of interesting changes to the core gameplay that show they are taking the evolution of the actual gameplay pretty seriously.

Won't argue with you on SMT X FE, I'm in that boat with you. The one character I thought had a cool design actually got shoved FURTHER back in the only still shot she was in.
bad trailer doesnt mean bad game. the trailer also told us a lot about how the game will bring together SMT and FE in my opinion. now we need details on the battle system
I'm not so sure I call chibi Final Fantasy a great art style

uh... yes. reminds me of the old school FF games.. also warriors of 4 light, theatrythm, final fantasy 9 were all much much better than any of the more "realistic FF games"

Following up on what I wrote I didn't make it clear that I also think it is unlikely for the NX to drop next year. It would be a tough sell for Nintendo. Well tougher.

They absolutely cannot carry two separate platforms anymore.

Nintendo are done with the WiiU imo, what we are getting now is stuff that was too far into development to drop or easy to finish. They have already moved on to their next console for me.

Nintendo: here are some expected or otherwise bland announcements of games you already knew we were working on.

Sony: Here are three of the biggest third party announcements that people have been asking for over a decade

It isn't just that Nintendo's outing was poor, it's that Sony's was so incredibly well received.

Not really. I don't own a PS4, i have no interest in buying one and i didn't see the Sony conference. And still i find the Nintendo conference the worst since 2008, maybe even topping it in the "ballsucking" department.

Best part for me, as a WiiU owner, was footage & screens of FAST Racing Neo before the conference, and the release date for Fatal Frame after the conference.

So frustrating. Nintendo needs to either a) release their consoles after the MSFT/Sony ones so they have at least the same horsepower or b) go 3rd party. If they put Mario on PS and Xbox they would mint money, and they would also-- if they went multiplat-- be able to properly support franchises like Metroid without ruining them.

So basically, the theme of Nintendo's E3 was taking beloved franchises and finding ways to butcher them to death while fans shriek in horror?

I could only halfway watch it at work. I don't get all the hate. I knew going in it was mainly about StarFox and Mario Maker and I thought those look great. They said Zelda wouldn't be there. Sure I wish there was a console Metroid but they did pretty much what I expected.

What has everyone up in arms?

The complete lack of support for the Wii U.
The lame spin offs few people want of Metroid Prime, Animal Crossing and Zelda which is like a slap in the face given how much people have been begging for a new Metroid Prime, Wii U Animal Crossing and Zelda.
Lack of new content.
80% of it was non-entertaining filler.
Not one new major Wii U game was shown.
Games that were expected to be shown didn't even get a mention.

Not at Paper Mario, Paper Mario game

Not a fan of the Mario & Luigi series, I take it? Because it's a Mario & Luigi game where Paper Mario is the "extra" character, like the babies in PiT, Bowser in BiS, and Dream Luigi in DT.

The Mario & Luigi series has been pretty stellar since its inception in 2003. Not a single game better than either PM64 or PMTTYD, but there's been nothing like Sticker Star or even Super Paper Mario. Partners In Time and Dream Team both suffer from pacing issues (Which resulted in one game being too short and one game being too long), but the core gameplay in both was still great.

Paper Jam will be yet another great Mario RPG released. Besides, Mario & Luigi has often been noted for being similar to the classic Paper Mario games anyway. This seems like a natural fit, especially when you consider that 3DS already had both a M&L game and a Paper Mario game, so now we're getting one that sort-of mixes the two.

Will likely be the 2016 3DS GOTY.

thats what they explicitely did not want to do this year. this means that we will have to wait until the january direct in 2016 since from now on out they will focus on the new releases.

maybe next weeks investor relations conference?

no way it will be next year. 2016 E3 reveal and 2017 holiday release is probably the reasonable guess

Again, Iwata's own statements suggest it's very unlikely that they're targeting any later than Q1 2017 for NX launch, and more likely holiday 2016.

My thoughts were also that they're shifting development to the NX, but how soon could that possibly come out? They said we wouldn't hear any details about it till 2016, but would they release it that soon? The Wii U was first unveiled at E3 2011 but wasn't released for a year and half later. So if there's a similar timeline, we're not seeing NX till 2017. So what, then, in the meantime?

Nintendo does still have some good stuff coming, but this was their moment to show off something new and unexpected. Honestly, I was half-expecting a Splatoon-like surprise of a new IP or something new and fresh. But it was all rehashes of previously-announced games and most of the new stuff was nothing special.

Barring a major delay (which isn't unprecedented - Wii U was seemingly pushed back a good six months or so from the original launch timeframe), it's not going to be the same timeline. See above.

Im a diehard Nintendo fan and I felt let down and embarraseed by that showing. Just did not do justice to the quality of titles available and the 1s shown felt really half arsed. Half arsed Zelda, Metroid, Mario and Animal Crossing.

Thank fuck the lineup for this year is already decent or Id be considering selling up and going Sony, but I know they still have no games I want till next year which means Nintendo need to bring it in 2016 or else they are gonna lose a lot of business.

This isnt a quick reaction, a lot of people are really pissed and they need to take some serious action and not fuck about with their fanbase at big events like e3.

I've always been a pretty die hard Nintendo fan, but honestly I think it's probably time to move on. Not just because of this direct, but just because of their overall vision or lack thereof.

I don't need SNES Nintendo pumping out quality exclusives and getting all the third party support on a high powered system, I honestly just need to be excited by the games they are making. I don't care about anything they've announced other than Zelda right now, and that's a bummer. :/ I want a gamecube era Nintendo to re-emerge, but they just don't have the manpower to make as many awesome games as they used to.

Anyone complaining about the Developer Diary things needs to link to a post they made in another conference thread where they were screaming to shut up and show games at some stiff-as-a-board developer standing on stage reading from a teleprompter about their title because its pretty much the same thing. Hell, last year's Nintendo Digital Event had developers in a yarn shop waxing poetic about yarn while introducing Wooley World. No one remembers it though because that thing was packed with game announcements that didn't rub a lot of people the wrong way.

This is pretty much what I expected. I don't expect Nintendo to go all out on a dying platform, I might want them to, but I don't expect it. I imagine that a lot of stuff has shifted to their next platform or shifted to be compatible with both the Wii U and their next platform.

the worst thing it about it was half the stuff was in the last e3. Honestly they should have just done the championship and said no Direct as we are working too on something special. This one felt like an obligation whereas like time it felt like a celebration

i agree that they did not deliver on the expectations (OMG Nintendo Direct shortly before E3, Smash direct directly before E3 this means E3 Digital Event will be huge)

....but seriously are you more excited about a remake of an old game then a brand new FF game with a great artstyle?
Here's the thing. If Sony has JUST shown the World of FF game last night, it would have been cute, but kind of weird and disappointing after months of rumors regarding the remake. It would have still been a unique title, but it would probably fall into the category of "something no one asked for but that people will play."

So they show a game that no one really expected, and one that notably pulls on nostalgia heartstrings with all its throwbacks, and it lulled everyone into false security. I saw it and I was like "Oh huh, guess no FF7R." And then boom, right when I was feeling a little disappointed at it not showing up? They smashed me in the face with it. It was a great reveal strategy.

And yes, at the end of the day, more people are excited about FF7R (what people have clamped for) than they are for World of FF (came out of nowhere).

Excluding Xenoblade X and Wooly World, don't make a presentation that somehow looks like it took place prior to E3 2011. Even the 3DS titles back then like Kid Icarus and Mario Kart 7 had the visual flair. 2015 could've fooled me into thinking they were squeezing out the 3DS' potential even further.

When you remember Nintendo's E3 2015, it'll probably be Star Fox followed by a visual haze of anime CG and low resolution 3DS games blown up on the screen with graphics and art styles you swear you've already seen before. Oh, and the guy playing the maracas.

On one hand, we complain that publishers show us games waaaaaayyyyy too early, on the other hand, we want Nintendo to start announcing games as soon as they begin development. Also, we act like it would make all the difference if they held all the content we already had until this E3 event. As if that would've changed how we enjoy the actual games.

So we're just dealing with whiny children on Christmas morning who got a dog instead of the pony they wanted? Got it. It all makes sense now.

Roughly put, but yeah.

But there is definitely more to it than that.

If its planned for next year. We would have seen it today.
yeah but they can't keep the wii u in an almost dead state for 2 years

I guess it's possible they learned from the wii -> wii u transition and are keeping a lot of games ready for late 2016 after E3 and early 2017 before the new console, going into the new console with a strong last year on the wii u, maybe some easy remasters to pad out the line up

You know what Nintendo's direct looked like? Like the work of a company that was planning to have Zelda out this year and had to cobble together some shit when that didn't happen.

i agree that they did not deliver on the expectations (OMG Nintendo Direct shortly before E3, Smash direct directly before E3 this means E3 Digital Event will be huge)

....but seriously are you more excited about a remake of an old game then a brand new FF game with a great artstyle?

That's one of the pervasive attitudes that I knew would lead to trouble. People hyped themselves up based on nothing and now, when they're let down, it's their own fault. Nintendo even tried to warn us by telling us no new console or mobile content would be shown, no Zelda, and nothing coming out after early 2016

Taking them showing stuff off early to mean that they have too much to show is just silly. I never expected that, especially not from a company like Nintendo, who is comparatively small compared to the likes of Sony or Microsoft.

Taking a picture of Reggie on Twitter from Retro to mean METROID PRIME 4 ON THE WAY is reaching, hard. Nobody should have just assumed that was coming.

Clearly the Nintendo Hype Train is a huge double-edged sword.

After reading those comments I finally put the finger on why that digital event felt so disturbing to me: I felt insulted watching it. They took what I love the most about Nintendo franchises and they made fun of it. They made fun of me.

SE introduced Kingdom hearts with a mobile title, but then moved on to KH3 footage. Sony introduced FF with World of FF, but then moved on to FFVII Remake. Those were scripted emotional events, bringing people's expectations down and then immediately rebounding so much higher.

Nintendo mentioned Star Fox (the lesser offender) and showed the crappiest textures on a WiiU title yet. Then they mentioned Zelda and showed a tiny filler DS title, and stopped there. Then they mentioned Metroid Prime, and showed a tiny filler DS title and stopped there. Then they mentioned WiiU Animal Crossing, and showed a party game with amiibo prereq. And then they mentioned a new WiiU mario game, and showed a tennis filler title.

They never rebounded from those low points. It was just a streak of low points. They took all the franchises people were expecting the most of, and they destroyed every one of them with insignificant filler titles. They didn't promise anything after those. They just showed the lesser version of everything, and then stopped.

I'm a die hard Nintendo fan, but I can't defend that. It feels like a terrible effort at content between 2 cycles. At that point I'm scared they redirected the next Zelda to be a launch title for the next system, along with a proper Metroid.

Great post, really nothing to add here.

Sorry but FE Fates looks like Awakening with a ton of content (and a hefty price tag) and SMTxFE is too early to call since we havent seen any gameplay yet (it will be out pretty soon though)bad trailer doesnt mean bad game. the trailer also told us a lot about how the game will bring together SMT and FE in my opinion. now we need details on the battle system

Really? I would love for you to elaborate because that info must have went over my head. Aesthetics aside if the gameplay is good I'll want to get into it.

Edit: Just to be doubly sure, I'm not being snarky. I just honestly didn't see any SMT or FE in that trailer and if you did I'd love insight.

Here's the more positive impression:

1. Show sucked, but the first party release schedule for the Wii U is still fine
2. Show was nowhere near as bad as 2008, no matter what anyone says
3. Show was, most importantly, not that important in the scheme of things. Nintendo butchering e3 2012 (pre-WiiU launch) was the moment many of us hardcore Nintendo fans had the sudden feeling of 'Oh shit, they really have no idea how to transition from the Wii success, they could be fucked here'. This one, by comparison, means nothing, as the 3DS has run its race and the WiiU is doomed anyway.
4. They kept the powder dry on the 2016 conference, which will surely be the equivalent of the 2012 WiiU one and will be astonishingly important. If the majority of teams at Nintendo are getting ready for e3 2016 already then maybe we won't see a repeat of e3 2012. Hinting at the NX now or a launch title for it would not have helped Nintendo's interests today and would have harmed the impact of a reveal in the future. They were right to take their medicine and roll with the bad reviews.

Am I the only guy who really liked what Nintendo showed?
Like, I'm genuinely surprised to see this amount of backlash.

I saw a handful of games that I'm interested in buying and I didn't expect any big-time AAA Wii U surprises (for obvious reasons). I was totally fine with it.

Ugh Nintendo is a really frustrating company to be a fan of.

Luckily I care a lot less now that Im older, but really!!! NX better be a homerun or Im staying far away from Nintendo foreverrrr *dramatic music*

EA and others predicted a 5-6 year cycle on the competition. Even if they release new consoles in 2020 or 2021 like you predict, we still deal with the idea that Nintendo expected its fans to buy two different consoles in one gen. It's not a good look, see Sega 32X and Saturn.

Speaking of third parties, Nintendo will have to put forth a massive and expensive effort to get them back on board, but it's not just about money. They need that huge install base, that Xbox/PS audience, because developers love multiplats.

If Nintendo is going to get any third parties for NX they'd better do it soon, becuase the third parties need to get their NX dev kits and need time to actually make games for the thing. Launching before anybody has time to finish games to support your console is a recipe for failure, see Sega Saturn.

I agree that it's not good for them to possibly expect fans to buy another console within what might be considered a single generation, but I'm not sure that this should trouble them too much given the Wii U's dire sales. The only people that have the thing are die hard Nintendo fans and they'll have no problem buying the NX when Nintendo releases Zelda, Mario and Metroid. Not sure what choice Nintendo has here. They'll have a host of problems no matter when they launch, and at this point I think the sooner the better.

You know what Nintendo's direct looked like? Like the work of a company that was planning to have Zelda out this year and had to cobble together some shit when that didn't happen.

I don't think one more title would've shifted this considerably.

They literally announced or revealed ONLY games, too. The only thing OUTSIDE of game footage was the Skylanders things and Amiibo shit.

There was no "Backwards compatability" moment or PS4 media player.

No account system improvements. No price drop. No new 3rd-party support. Nothing to admit faults or things to improve on. Nothing.

They aren't learning.

Hopefully they bring their big guns for next year but I was really dissapointed by their digital event. Aside from Star Fox, FE, yoshi, and xenoblade none of the games really interested me and it just felt underwhelming.

Am I the only guy who really liked what Nintendo showed?

It's not that the games weren't liked. The issue is that the majority of the direct was spent on previously-announced games and semi-pointless dev interviews.

After E3 2013 and E3 2014, people expected better from Nintendo Digital Event. Can you blame them?

NX better be a homerun or Im staying far away from Nintendo foreverrrr *dramatic music*

Man, the Wii-U and its mis-handling wasn't enough to deter you from buying future Nintendo consoles?
You're a better Nintendo fan than I, I guess.

Nintendo's E3 show was very poor.

The "Animal Crossing Wii U" game turned out nothing more to be a board game using upgraded New Leaf assets, Metroid appeared to be a joke of a game and nothing significant was shown.

As far as I am concerned, today's E3 for Nintendo confirmed the impending end of 3DS and Wii U and a more serious commitment to NX as being their newly driving product.
