That seems like a really sleazy thing to do.

Not a huge fan of KS in general, but I thought it made sense for Shenmue 3 as a way of the moneymen going "are people really into this old thing, or just saying they are?" and Sony giving them an audience/credibility. Having it turn out Sony themselves are the moneymen (or at least partially) puts a really ugly spin on the whole announcement.

Look forward to hearing the guy's thoughts on it. Can't imagine Jeff will hold back.

Yeah, I guess that makes practical sense. If they did a Gears pack they would at least probably try to keep it SP only :P

I think Uncharted and Halo are very comparable on SP and MP content and the balance.

Dishonored V gears, eh fine. But it's going from shitting on remakes and remasters (which I can totally understand) to praising the shit out of one or two just because they are the ones you want to play. Again, that's fine as long as they don't push some kind of philosophical opposition to the idea of these remakes in general, as they have done only to turn around and say that this one is ok because you happen to like that series. This is GB; I think they are better than that.

don't know if it's happened with games, but iirc this has been pretty common with movie kickstarters.

not really a fan, but when the announcement got made at sony's show I kind of just figured that would be the case. 2 million is nowhere near enough to make the game people want.

Not for $80 CAD. I wouldn't mind playing it for like $10 down the line. For all these remasters, I'm playing the long game where I can pick them up for less than $30.

Also, it's good to keep in mind that new comers will be able to play this remaster an ideal state. Gears of War 1's textures and texture pop-in was rough then. Imagine it now. Woof.

Why is this sleazy? They're upfront about it. There were a number of Kickstarters that had additional backing well after the fact, at least Sony is coming out and saying this before the Kickstarter is over so you could retract your support if it offended you somehow.

I mentioned it in the other thread, but for veteran developers, I can't see any Kickstarter as a sole funding source. It's a great way for devs to prove to investors that there is a demand and that consumers will put their money where their mouths are.

And who thought $2 million was enough to make Shenmue III?

I dunno, I think it was kinda obvious that Sony had to be funding at least some of it.

It's not even about Nintendo vs MS or Sony or even PC. GB used to be so much fun to listen to. Honest opinion or not, listening to people just shit on major announcements because it's not what they want to see is awful

I just watched their MS one today and I don't recall any of those discussions being as you've described.

Halo 7 - "I hope its cool" is pretty much the only sentiment here... mostly talked about the story.

Gear 3/4- They talked about how boring new Gears 4 looked and Jeff made a comment about how excited he was to play Gears of War 1 again... though I assume you missed the sarcasm in that statement.

Dishonored remaster - Jeff jokingly booed during the announcement, Vinny wants to go back and finish it, wonders why theres no PC version.

Uncharted 4 - You cut off the rest of Brad's comment..he says "I didn't really want another Uncharted but this looks incomprehensibly good."

That's really disappointing to hear. I was hoping the FOV was a limitation of the really impressive projectors the Hololens used (rumoured DLP?) - apparently the images it produces are really opaque.

Having the FOV shrink makes me think they're running into a processing ceiling - which kinda makes sense given they want to keep the unit entirely self contained. Realistically I just don't think we're anywhere near making a SoC that can power the vision MS is trying to sell - especially when you consider all the other hardware (and batteries...) that has to go into the headset.

I can't see Nadella letting this thing out of the door - it seems to be the exact type of half-baked Microsoft release he's trying to kill off. Gotta wonder if it's just a blue sky project to make MS look like they're ahead of the game while they're cutting deals with Oculus and Valve to be sat at that table.

I dunno man. I'm not sure if I have such a big problem with this, but if say Ubisoft should start financing its small titles through Kickstarter I would think it would be super weird. And people being willing to pay for it doesn't change that. Huge billion dollar companies crowdfunding their shit will always feel off to me.

It's all about context.

Shenmue is a beast. A mythical beast.

No-one really knew what was going to happen.

I 100% believe this is a special case and I'm willing to give it a pass.

Having more control over how big companies choose which projects they go forward with seems like a good thing for consumers.

it's really mind boggling that people were expecting for this game to be made on a 2m+ budget WITHOUT a publisher involved. Sure the KS budget can (and already has) went above the 2m goal but I thought it was pretty clear Yu Suzuki wanted to make a sequel among the lines of the first two by the pitch video. Sure he/YsNet could have been more transparent about the whole situtaion but it was pretty clear Sony was involved in some form or another.

I haven't noticed the videos hitching or the site being noticeably slower. But there has been instances of the site just straight up going down for a few minutes when they've been streaming, which is not something that should happen. Does Gamespot get all the servers? :P
 
Drew/Jason seem kind of bad at audio in general (west coast videos always sound way too quiet compared to every other video I'll watch, including GBEast stuff) but other than that I haven't really noticed anything.

why not just say "this game is exclusive to PS4 and PC" from the start then like they did with SF5?
 
Wow. I just looked up what it cost to make the original Shenmue. I sort of forgot that it cost $70million. $2 million seems super low for the kickstarter. I guess it was totally obvious that they had some other funding sources so it's not surprising Sony is behind it.

My guess is because prior to the funding goal being met(which obviously didn't happen when the pitch aired) the game itself outside of the trailer technically doesn't exist. Like I said, they could have been more transparent about the whole situation. On the KS page, they said it's coming to PS4/PC. In this day and age, it's pretty odd to have a PS4 version and not a XB1 unless there was some behind the scenes talks that occurred.

I find Phil and Rami to be pretty insufferable and the fact you had to refer to the others as the "Samurai Gun guys" shows how memorable that was. And fact of the matter is, when people talk about memorable GDC stuff they invariably go to the Lang/Boon/Johnny V bit.
 
I think I prefer those crazy 20 min videos of them talking in to a mic outside a press conference afterwards than the commentary.

Drew/Vinny always got imaginative with the editing too.

Hopefully we get some old school videos from inside the show itself.

Trying to get the balance between the press conf audio and the commentary audio "right" sounds like an exercise in frustration.
