Aside from the gameplay which many folks have chimed in about I reckon FFVIII is definitely up there in terms of world building. Everything about the details is on point.

The world is really the thing that matters to me in that sort of game. It's too bad PS1 games look so grubby, even emulated.

I finally just caught up with Square's conference; that got pretty uncomfortable near the end there, hmm.
