Valve didn't accepted PC Gamer's invite to PC Gamer Show

It's fine, whatever, they don't need to show up to that show when they're honestly probably bigger than it and have their own marketing rollout plan.

But on the other hand, Valve has every reason (and resource) to be running that show instead of PC Gamer.

People would have eaten them alive if they showed up and didn't announce a game, so I don't blame them really, if they have something they want to announce (hardware or software wise) they'll probably just drop it or have their own event.
Most the presenters didn't announce a game. Wasn't that kind of show

Valvcon here we come! HL3 confirmed! /s

Blizzard has their own con and they still showed up.

Microsoft had a press conference yesterday and they still showed up.

Valve showing up or not had nothing to do with whether or not they wanted to do their own event later.

They just didn't think it was important enough.

Valve had been confirmed to not be anywhere near E3 for a while now and like 95% of the twitch chat the entire show was still Gaben and Half Life 3 posts.

What do people think would have happened if people from Valve actually did go and they showed anything BUT Half Life 3? Especially at the same E3 where TLG, FF7, and Shenmue 3 appeared.

Some of the biggest backlash you'd ever see, they've been getting pockets of that here and there, I don't think they want a Tsar Bomba-sized shitstorm.

This probably sounds a lot more cynical than I intend, but Valve doesn't have to try and placate fans at events like this anymore. They have the ever-growing Steam ecosystem and games with really perfected core gameplay, like Dota 2 and CS: GO, that are popular in emerging markets and have a lot of room for monetization. They don't really care if people on the Internet are frustrated with them because the data (money) indicates that what they're doing is "right."

Cynical, sure, but can't help but agree. I still feel bad for Half-Life fans.

You'd think they'd want to hit L.A. and let off a little steam.

Oh ho...

They'll probably have their own dedicated event if they do anything with the rest of the year, or just show off the Vive consumer edition at the next trade show once it's ready.

It drives me insane that they don't just announce Half Life 3 and get this over with. It doesn't have to be a technical marvel, just finish the goddamn story with modern tech. I feel like they're either a) so obsessed with setting new industry standards or b) so disinterested in the concept of returning to HL that it's just never going to happen.

Of course, they may be holding off on it until Source 2 is further along, but it almost sounds like they aren't working on it from some of the things I've heard. I dunno, it's just a frustrating situation.

Valve's better than Half Life at this point. Making a 10 hour single player shooter experience is completely beneath them, and until such a time that there's an angle to design and technology such that it is an appealing, relevant option to them again there won't be a Half Life 3.

(I'm totally OK with that. They are pioneering and reinventing an entire huge gaming ecosystem, that's so much more interesting than making levels where you gravity gun a sink into some hapless dude.

Should've offered Gaben a rare knife to entice him.

That would have been sikh.

The best game series they ever made is beneath them?

Didn't Valve somewhat declare war against Microsoft when they released Windows 8? I remember reading somewhere that Valve started making the push for Linux and their own OS when they learned about Windows 8. I think Valve not being there just Valve not wanting to associate themselves with a Microsoft Windows/Xbox platform, who is one of the sponsors of the show.

Could have had a short video message about exciting things to come. Literally anything. Instead they want to sit in their ivory tower, count their money, and make hats. Whatever.

Still terrible at PR.

If that was truly the case, if Half-Life is completely beneath them at this point, is it not fair at least to confirm so? Stringing fans along for years like that is completely unnecessary and gives them no points on their end. Imagine things like The Last Guardian or Fallout 4 going on for a few more years before their reveal, it's not fair to those fans. Of course, Valve is known for their communication habits so this would never happen, but damn, it's amazing how much money we throw at them yet they can't really have the decency to acknowledge our existence once in a while.
I personally don't care much for Half-Life, but I hate when fans are strung along so many years like this.

Even if they're not making anymore game. I think they would've been a great support for that show just by showing up.

But they probably dodged because of Half life 3 fans.

A platform level store is a step in the direction of a more closed platform, something that is the opposite of what Valve's business is based on along with PC gaming. That is part of the impetus for improving and supporting Linux. As they put it "it is a get out of jail free card for the industry"

Valve not showing up is likely because they have other plans. They are launching tons of stuff in November. It wouldn't surprise me if they had an event of their own via Steam Broadcasting or something

Microsoft announced a partnership with ValveVR for Windows 10 at MS's conference, so I highly doubt that.

They can't just avoid the public eye forever. They need to just confirm "yes it's happening" or "no, it's not". That's it. They just need to stop this fucking guessing game and lack of communication.

thats not developing games lol

-gaf retards
Lovely.

Sony wouldn't have won that E3 if they were honest from the start, lol.

It's really weird they rejected it when they could've probably used the time to show off Steam Link/Controller. Then again, given the PC conference's format, it's probably for the best.

Lovely.

I think they have been abundantly clear about it. Particularly in Keighley's interview.

Ya would of been nice for them to show up to the first pc gaming show at E3. Even if it was just to show off all their new Steam Hardware and Source 2.0. Hopefully it was just to dodge fans and not because they didn't care about this event.

I don't know if I could have taken a 4 hour show. It was long enough x.x

Not even half life 3 is worth that for me.

Valve doesn't go to E3 anymore.

Not surprised. They're shifting their focus to services, not games. Steam has been too successful for them to ignore that.

Still disappointed.

True, they only support two of the biggest games out there right now with Dota 2 and CS GO. No big deal. Sitting on that Steam money, doing nothing but watch it grow.

I want Half Life still but my replays of the series are definitely filed under nostalgia motivation. It just feels like the proximity of finishing that story is getting a little absurd.

I don't mean to rush them, more so to say as time goes on I call my caring into question.

From the article:
While navigating the minefield that is Half-Life 3, while never actually mentioning it by name, Newell offered what might sound either like hope for more Half-Life or a gentle warning that it might never actually happen, depending on how you read it.

This is what I'm talking about. Merely just saying Half-Life doesn't do anything. They haven't been clear about the game at all, just stringing people along with a good chance of false hope for those who want closure. It's something to see him say "Yeah, I get it" when he talks about the possibility of missing out on good experiences that won't happen again, but doesn't seem to relate it to what Valve fans want to know about. And not showing up to PC events like E3 when they're clearly one of the biggest dogs in the industry kind of seems like a slap in the face, especially when they have a lot of announced shit to show off anyways like the Steam Controller, Steam Boxes, the Steam Link, VR tech, etc.
