Look at
this. Its a fan concept piece of a 2D indie-styled Metroid game. Its the top image on Reddit/gaming right now, and has been shared on Twitter by hundreds, possibly more.
A cheaper 2D game in the Metroidvania style, outsourced and supervised with a quality studio - heck, even a remake of Metroid 2 - would have gone down infinitely better than what Nintendo presented.
They didn't need to break the bank, and go all AAA game development. They just needed to make a Metroid that was Metroid, and not a sports/co-op multiplayer shooter.
I'm glad you liked it, I came out of GIF retirement to make that. Also, it contains footage of another perfectly great looking Metroid, made on a shoestring budget by one man, to reinforce my earlier points to atbigelow.
