cuz i never got to play the shenmue games and i'd really want to :o

Boom.
And if anyone wants, here's a version of the Shenmue Defense Force banner that's 100 pixels wide (not stretched, but redone):

Cheers for the template!

This has literally been mentioned every page of this thread. It's not going to happen. Sega own the rights to Shenmue and Shenmue II so you need to ask them. It's out of Yu's control and is impossible for them to be a part of this Kickstarter as they don't have the rights to them.

I think a rerelease of Shenmue 1 and 2 is really really really really really really incredibly likely. Sega will cash in as 3 gets closer to release.

I gave $29. Anyway how does this work, when will the money be taken from my bank account and is there anyway to change the currency?

~28 days when the Kickstarter ends.

From Kickstarter:

Your pledge will be collected in the project's native currency, whether or not you see a conversion to your country's currency on the project page.

If you have questions about foreign currency transactions, we'd recommend reaching out to your financial institution for further clarification.

Itl be taken out of your account at the end of the campaign. You're stuck with pledging in whatever currency the kickstarter is being funded in, but you're bank will automatically convert the dollar to whatever your local currency is.

Can't really afford this right now, but I've made my pledge. The first game blew my fucking mind when I was a kid. I can't even explain the feeling the game had.

Hopefully Sega pull their fingers out of their arses and re-release the first two games.

It will be deducted at the conclusion of the Kickstarter (this particular one's a month long). If you're referring to a currency conversion, then it will be done automatically at the current exchange value.

A big part of the original Shenmue games were the Sega Easter eggs, such as the capsule toys and playing Sega games in the arcades. Is there any possibility that those will appear in this game even though those licenses belong to Sega?
There are some things I can use and there are some things I can’t use. It’s kind of depending on further talks with Sega. I think there’s going to be a lot of small details that we’re going to have to speak with them on as we go along.

The challenging part, at least in the United States, is that Shenmue came out on Sega Dreamcast, Shenmue II came out on Xbox, and Shenmue III is coming to PlayStation 4 and PC, making it difficult for many fans to experience the first two games since they’re on separate platforms. Are there any plans to bring Shenmue I and Shenmue II to modern platforms?
If you have that question, it’s better that you ask Sega because they hold the rights to those. Those are their properties and I'm not in a position to talk about that, but I’m thinking about asking them!

seems we've got some upswing on the donations today. must be payday for some!

Actually it's been a bit slower today compared to yesterday (not to panic anyone and send them into a meltdown). The hourly increases have been around the 2.5k-4.5k range (since 10:00 BST). This point yesterday was around when people were pledge trolling though, there doesn't seem to have been any of that today.

I sure hope he gets to voice Ryo. He seems as passionate about Shenmue as David Hayter was about Metal Gear.

I don't. He was a terrible voice actor, along with everyone else in Shenmue 1 and 2. The voice acting was so amazingly bad. If they do make him the voice actor for Ryo, I at least hope they give us a JP language option with EN subs.

It's developed by Neilo, they are a studio that was funded by ex AM2 employees and there are former Shenmue team members on this project, some of them are listed on the KS page.

I understand that, but what do we know about the team other than it being comprised of a few key Shenmue devs? For all we know, they could be much less competent than the OG Shenmue team.

Haha, I sensed that that joke was coming.

Fun Fact: When playing Shenmue 2, I thought that they were speaking Chinese in the game because 1 was in English and 2 was not.

Bare in mind I was 9-10 at that point, so I didn't know the difference between Chinese and Japanese.

So I accidentally got the full feeling of the "Foreign Territory" that the Developers were aiming for but they felt All-Chinese Speaking was too ambitious.

So i'm lucky I was stupid enough and managed to get that experience.

You can hear him speak live on youtube right now. Doesn't sound amazingly bad.
You might also want to read this for a possible explanation why the original English voice acting was the way it was.

The fact that almost every voice actor for the hundreds of characters indicate that it was an issue with the voice direction.

I understand that due to having so many voiced characters, the budget was likely slim, but I just absolutely don't believe that every single person was a good voice actor.

Even then, I still think Corey did a great job. Have there been better performances? Sure. Somehow though, it remains one of the most memorable to me.

Unless they hire monkeys on the project, the so called skill level people like to cite for developers so often is more or less flat when it comes to say, programmers etc. You can look at the studio's past output if you like to get an idea? But you wouldn't really get a representation of what this team can produce under Suzuki for instance.

corey marshall is a pretty cool guy. it'd be cool if he came back. just so long as the game doesn't suffer the poor translation and voice direction, it'll be fine.

actually that's another question for the AMA. who's doing the translation?

The voice acting issues is an epic facepalm. Now wonder I never liked the English voice acting that much even though it had its charms here and there. Let's hope that mistake will never happen again. A person who is not fluent in English language cannot have creative control on English vocal localisation. It doesn't work. Just like a person who can barely speak Japanese can not go and localise Japanese voice acting. The person they got in spaced though was the voice actor for this guy - absolutely awesome:

Seems very positive about it. I'm guessing the things SEGA has no problem licensing to him is stuff line Space Harrier, Outrun, Virtua Fighter etc the things he worked on but properties that other teams maintain like Sonic the Hedgehog would require some further talks.

Glad to see he'll also be putting forward Shenmue 1 and 2... hopefully he can convince Nagoshi :D

Less thinking, more doing!

Let's get that Federation Force Hate-Mob to get a Petition up for Shenmue 1 and 2 to come out!

I think you mean it's time to get SEGA PC Ports back up and running for Shenmue edition!

i think ryo's adventures take him to canada at some point and he sees nozomi again while there.

If you mean how Shenmue ultimately ends then yes, that's a possibility.

(I doubt it though, Ryo's going to retire in China.)

Q: Shenmue was a very revolutionary and influential game when it was released on Dreamcast. A lot has changed in the games industry since then. How does the team work to make a game just as revolutionary so long after the original?

A: It’s all about the new challenges with me, and I definitely want to try these new things. Of course, it’s going to come down to the funding and how much we’re going to be able to spend on Shenmue III, but if we get to that point, I believe it will be just as revolutionary as the ones before.

Man, I hope he gets the funding he needs.
