Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

it's 100$ true.

which is also why publishers need to approve stuff and get it digitally on the marketplace to capture some of this money.

Not unless they're already planning on releasing HD remakes. For instance, I doubt Dishonored 1 would be approved considering the HD remake is coming out this holiday.

Releasing HD remakes is a good way for publishers to make money considering the cost is pretty low on their part.

Catching goodwill from customers, and packing in the "classic" version would be a smart move on their part though.

"Buy Dishonored HD for Xbox One and receive a code for Dishonored for Xbox 360, absolutely free - enjoy both on your Xbox One console".

Will Mass Effect DLC work with this compatibility mode?

Not yet, but they say it will by time of general availability.

I just realized that this is the first generation where the last-gen consoles had digital content. Wouldn't that alone make all the 'BC doesn't matter' or previous BC stats virtually irrelevant? Being able to play all your old digital games makes consoles a bit more competitive with PCs

Yep, I've been saying that all along. We expect it from our other digital download devices (as long as they are on the same platform -Apple iOS, Windows, etc). I never understood why people were so quick to dismiss it for game consoles.

Not sure if this has been posted in this thread, but it was posted in reddit. You don't need to be in the preview program to have BC. You just need someone on your friends list that has played a 360 game. If anyone wants to play Mass Effect, my gamertag is Perfybro

You just look at my recent activity, click mass effect, view in store, and it lets you download it if you owned it digitally on 360.

Hey guys,

So can I buy the digital version of these games and just download them or will I also need the disc? Looking into getting some games but would prefer to just go digital on this since most will be cheap.

So odd. I own it the game(ME) have the right gamertag and this doesn't work for me, or anyone in my group that I know of. Weirdness. I finally stopped trying.

yes you can go to XBOdotCOM and buy games if you dont have an xbox360. You have to be in the preview program to see them in your xbox one ready to install list. Before you buy check if the game works on xbox one.

If there are 100 titles at launch there's a good chance all three Mass Effects will be there, I hope. I've only played 3 but will wait until all three are there + DLC before jumping in.

If game companies utilize the "Buy our game, get these 360 games for free" for Xbox One games, I would definitely buy more games on my Xbone then on my PS4.

I could honestly see this affecting platform sales balance, even if its a small change.

Question.. if you have a game on disk, and pop it in and download it (in preview program). Do you need to keep the 360 disk in the drive? Or does it treat it like a digital title afterwards?

So many games last gen where the 360 version was the definitive console version and now they will be definitive-er on X1.

This shit is like witchcraft. It was so weird when I started installing and playing games I bought last gen on the X1. So many of these games hold up so well, it isn't like popping a PSX game into a PS3.

They recently gave Dishonored away for free via GWG. I'm sure that's something that wouldn't have been expected either considering a remaster is hitting.

There are only two games I don't own if you guys want to use my gamertag to download your games. I haven't played them all on my One, if that matters.

Gamertag = UraMallas

Just goes to show. Power is nothing without knowledge, they have taken a weak CPU and worked magic. MS has some of the best programmers in the world, i wonder if any of their staff read some of the views of the so called experts on here and just laugh. For me this was a massive FU to the haters.

Yes, but that was for 360 owners not Xbox One owners. Approving Dishonored for X1 BC would eat away some of the potential sales of Dishonored HD remake on X1. Publishers are smarter than to do that.

Publishers are hopefully smarter than to bar people from playing the games they already own for no other reason than because they are scared people won't buy their new game. Anyone who doesn't let BC work for old 360 games will garner a lot of bad press when the feature launches considering everyone knows all it takes on their part is giving Microsoft the OK. They aren't new versions of the titles, it's simply letting you play the discs or digital versions on the Xbox One. If you don't already own it, you can buy them from the publisher, and they still make money without having to do anything. There's no loss to the publisher here at all, if they think so, they are stupid and anti-consumer.

Business is business. I don't expect publishers to bend over backwards to ruin their profit margins.

There's literally no bending over backwards involved? What Microsoft has done has basically given every Xbox One owner a free 360. That's it. They aren't "Xbox One versions" of these games - they're exactly the same games as before - games that people have already paid for. In fact, publishers will likely end up making more money from their old, dead games that no one buys anymore in the end from this considering Microsoft did all the work for them and will probably have a 360 storefront on the One just because of this. It's a win-win for them, through and through. Free 360 game with their Xbox One game incentives that EA, Ubisoft, and Bethesda are doing I think is going to become pretty regular as it costs them almost nothing and provides incentive and extra value for the customer. Anyone who hadn't bought a 360 before would be able to now buy an old game that the publisher wouldn't have been able to make money off of anyway. That's pure profit. I don't even understand how people can think otherwise.

Part of the incentive of MS securing legal is so they can sell 360 games to the One userbase. Now that they have a unified store and the quality of the emulation it only makes sense.

I just want them to do a tech talk on it sometime. My guess would be a CPU translator like Transmeta's tech for Rosetta on OSX to handle the CPU portion, and full on emulation for the rest of the system in software, with maybe some automated pre-baking / pre-decompression of the 360 code and assets to speed things up.

Wonder if they'll add an option in the MCC to quicklaunch Wars and Reach 360.

I wish all of these disc games weren't 6-7 gigs lol, but still, I'm so glad this is a thing. I was going to buy another 360 recently too.

http://xbox.uservoice.com/forums/25...30388-xbox360-gold-sharing?page=1&per_page=20

Everyone needs to up vote this suggestion. Sharing Gold does not work for 360 games on XB1 because shared Gold isn't a feature on 360. This could end up being a real stinker at at launch if things don't change.

I wonder if that's even possible for them to work in - it would mean updating how Gold works on 360. They will catch a lot of flak though if they don't once this feature launches - just read some of the hate message on there... lol...

Have they said when the next round of BC titles will be announced? That list needs to grow and FAST. The momentum will die off if they don't start bringing more games in a regular basis.

They don't have to worry about "hype" because it is in preview now, which is for testing in the public and gather feedbacks.

They kind of do seeing the way they announced it at E3. Also there is a lot of people in preview. Most of the people who heard the announcement are probably in preview.

Not to let that get to them but I hope the announce a schedule of some sorts on when they are going to release games for BC.

Was a genuine "Oh wow" moment for me when they announced it at E3. Not saying the people on GAF didn't make sense with their arguments for why BC isn't possible, but its damn good to have them proven wrong. Halo Wars on my Xbox One in the near future? Hell yeah.

Does anybody have Small Arms or Banjo N+B in their recently played list? Neither of these are showing up on my XB1 despite owning both digitally. I'd like to add you and see what happens if I try to download via the preview workaround.

They'll come out when they're ready. It's better to have them tested in the preview first before the public roll-out.

Come to think of it, a few months ago I rememebr getting a survey in the preview dashboard app asking if I'd be cool with testing out games before they're released - and it was like 98% "Yes" in the results. I'm pretty sure part of that was concerning the new pre-release games they are testing, but I'm betting part of it was for this.

It's pretty genius having the Preview program members testing these games before they are rolled out to the public. I think it will really help with getting all the BC games running smoothly come launch. I'm pretty sure each new BC game will be available a few months before they're available publicly - and the interest in BC will give them a huge influx of new preview testers to help speed along the process, too!
