Non US Hip-Hop. How do you feel about it?

UK Grime>>>>>

Tempz, Ghetts, Lethal Bizzle, and Skepta are who I usually listen to that's beyond US Hip Hop. One time I did try to listen to Japan trap/drill music and it was dope as fuck, but not something I would play in the ride :/.

Always sounds weird to me. Whenever I think foreign rap I think of 'Holiday Rap' by MC Miker and DJ Sven. Maybe I'm biased.

It really is unfortunate because it goes against the message of Hip Hop. Hip Hop culture is a global phenomenon because people all over the world experience similar struggles like being poor or racism and discrimination. It connects people like no other genre.

What goes against the message of hip hop?

MF DOOM was born in the UK but I don't think you can call him a non-US rapper. I always associated him with NYC rap.

Dizzee Rascal and The Streets for me. Haven't really listened to the Streets in a while though. I'm sure I'm forgetting some people.

Well Drake is ultra soft so the rest of the world has to make up for Drake putting a bad look on non USA hip-hop!

Seriously the "Drake is soft" memes are getting played out. Despite his shenanigans, dude is still a good rapper. His latest album was pretty good, even though it was a huge b-side.

The UK's equivalent are punk (pre hip hop) and drum and bass (post hip hop). I think every country has its music movement that expresses the struggles of the poor, but it's not always hip hop.

Yeah, foreign rap is just as good in my opinion. The accents (or other languages) dont bother me, as long as the flow is good

I find Non US Hip-Hop/Rap pretty entertaining.

Some Korean or Japanese Rap is pretty entertaining, especially the music videos that play at Korean BBQ places near me.

I also like Reggaeton. I know, I know, a lot of Puerto Ricans hate it but I love the beats and as a Rap fan growing up I never had any Puerto Rican artists to look up to. The only one I remember was Big Pun who was awesome but somehow even more overweight then Biggie Smalls. His side kick Fat Joe was still pretty good though.

Agreed, and he has one of the best production crews in the business. His lyrical content definitely is lacking though.

Ignoring other people because they're different.

I knew people were desperate for a pedestal.

I don't "ignore" anyone. I just said I've tried to get into other country's interpretations of hip hop and simply didn't like it. Having subjective tastes isn't hip hop now?

Okay, guy.

Oh course, Drake is not as hungry as he was during the So Far Gone days...but he's still is alright compared to most rappers on the radio.

Well of course there are also other genres of music. This doesn't change what I said though.

MF Doom's one of the best MCs worldwide, full stop.

also

Tricky
Massive Attack
Maxim
The Streets

I've heard some French and Moroccan stuff that isn't bad, either.

Eh, ok. You don't have to get all hot about it. I didn't try to attack you I was just stating my opinion.
So are you removing the genre hip hop from hip hop culture?
No?

Why people keep saying Doom as Non US Hip Hop??

Dude started out with KMD which was a US hip Hop group, and came out with US hip hop albums....am I missing something?

I thought we were talking about hip hop outside of the US.

He was born in the UK but you're absolutely right.

I think it sounds corny to me, mostly because of the accent and flow.

Especially spanish Hip-Hop, can't stand that.

Then I don't get what your point is. Other countries had other genres that carried the same purpose as hip hop did in the states.
And still, the same countries also embraced Hip Hop on top of it for its message and what its represent. I'm not sure what we're arguing here.

Edit
whatever, I really don't look for a fight about this. I'm out.

Oh yeah I figure that...but still....

I understand where you are coming from. It took me a minute to get a feel of Grime, until I realize that music gets you pump up. It's perfect exercise music despite the heavy accents and hard to understand lyrics.

I used to listen to a bit of Spanish Hip Hop and it was too much for me. I hate the beats that they usually make for the songs, it's too bouncy and dated for my taste :/.

They did, but hip hop came out of America due to political critical mass being reached. Those countries had their own movements. They did not embrace the same fire, but a variant of it. Hip hop culture is very specific to the US for what it represents historically.

Drake on top of the game. Been on a winning streak for years, no joke.

Indeed. Dude got off of the sinking ship known as Cash Money records, put out back to back quality albums, and still relevant in hip hop. If being soft can give you that much success, I want the piece of the Charmin :(.

The only rappers I listen 2 are Non US besides K.Flay.

G Dragon, CL, Die antwoord, and MIA she's not a rapper but will rap occasionally

if Massive Attack counts then them 2

I've grown to like Finnish rap maybe even more than US. It's a fairly new thing here. Of course it's been around since the 80's but the main language (for Finnish rap) was English until the 2000's. It was a common conception that English is the only valid language for Hip-Hop music. Luckily that view was proven wrong.

We have good producers and rappers nowadays even though we tend to borrow (copy) loads of shit from the States. Both in sound and topic. Finnish rap has no market value anywhere else. Our language sounds god-awful to outsiders.

Barring my avatar (seriously ignore it for this) but neither of those two are rappers. They might be now (CL is extremely suspect) but both of them were brought up in the Hallyu system. They only became rappers when it was fairly obvious YG was grooming them to be the golden gooses when both of their idol groups expired around this time.

I'm from Toronto and there's a handful of really dope hiphop coming out of here. I'll list some:

Tre Mission - One of my favourite rappers, period. Check out his mixtape 'Malmaison' and his debut album 'Stigmata' he's considered Grime, and works with alot of big UK artists, and has a huge fanbase out there. He's also appeared on the DVD series Lord of the Mics 3, and had appearances on Tim Westwood numerous times.

Jazz Cartier - check out his latest mixtape/album/project Marauding in Paradise, it's really varied, his producer Lantz is awesome and his first headling show a few weeks ago was fantastic (I was there, loved it.)

Rich Kidd - I really enjoy his mixtape In My Opinion vol.1, but he's also part of the Juno Award winning group Naturally Born Strangers and has a huge fanbase with that project. I've seen him live as an opening act numerous times, and he's really dope - and a cool person in general.

Raz Fresco - New young cat, sounds like 90s new york with how crafty and interesting his rhymes are. I've only listened to The Screwface Tape, but he recently released his first album Pablo Fresobar, which has gotten great reviews.

I feel like there's someone I'm missing but I'll edit the post if it comes to me.

Also, of course Drake but he barely counts, PartyNextDoor is fantastic, and The Weeknd.

I don't listen to too much of it but there are a few non-US rappers/groups that I consider to be among my favorites in the genre. Also, I by non-US, I really just mean non-North America cause I don't really consider Canada to be as foreign as some other people I listen to.

SHAD's pretty good too, but I haven't delved too deep into his stuff.
