Splatoon |OT2| Prepare to Dye

Look for Splatoon tips on YouTube, there is a good video there with 50 of them, seeing them in action makes you understand them more to put them in practice ;)

Inking walls don't count in turf wars, but they are still useful for hiding/sneaking/alternate routes.

If you're thinking of trying the motion controls, the single player mode is a steady way to get a handle of it.

Beware the super jump. It's a powerful tool (and there are some ways to utilize constant super jumping for effectiveness in turf wars), but unless you have really good map awareness, chances are you'll die by it.

Activating any special will automatically refill your ink, so don't be afraid to get low on ink as you're maxing it out.

Shoot straight when you're inking the ground. It's more important to sloppily cover a large area, than to slowly and cleanly cover a small area.

You can super jump at any time, and that includes super jumping back to spawn. So don't bother sticking a beacon there.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Play single player if you're having trouble adjusting to everything.

Most levels are fairly simple and get you used to aiming, swimming, etc. Some levels take place on multiplayer maps and give you an idea of what 1 on 1 firefights will be like. The final boss is a huge spike in difficulty which should prepare you for how chaotic the multiplayer can get at times.

Let's see...

*There are 3 minutes in a match to paint your base. Rush to the middle near the beginning. You can go back and paint the base more later after you get splatted and respawn.

*Only go into the enemy base on your own if they're walking all over your team's base. The reason you want to go into their base on your own if they're in your base is to cause them to super jump back to spawn, killing their momentum. The lack of voice chat means that good co-ordination is hard so often the majority of a team will jump back to base just to get one guy. However, wandering on your own when the enemy actually has people there will just get you splatted and give the enemy an easy opportunity to build up their super meter.

*Inking a lot of turf is good but if nobody on your team is doing any defense then you could end up just painting the same turf over and over.

*If the game ever makes you rage, go play Mario Kart 8 for perspective.

Pay attention to the map. You can to some degree determine where your opponents are by seeing where their ink is appearing.

Be really careful when super jumping. The game puts an icon that's visible to the other team where you are going to land. If you jump straight to the front lines. You'll likely just get killed immediately.

Mobility is super important. You want to have your ink at and leading to the areas of strategic importance. Try to limit your opponents mobility by cutting off their paths of travel. Always to to make sure you have at least some ink to move around in if you're going to be in a firefight.

Know when to play defense. I see a lot of people staying on the offensive and charging straight into the enemy territory and getting killed/ letting the opponent slip past them to the middle of the map. If you're winning try to find defensible positions from which you can keep them on their side of the match.

Thank you very much for all your tips, it's a great insight at how competitive playing works. I'll probably start with single-player until I feel confident enough for multiplayer.

So I unlocked all the amiibo challenges, and so far only this outfit has 2 slots. Are regular clothes limited to 1 slot skill? Or it's based on your level?

You shouldn't feel intimidated with multiplayer, it doesn't actually keep track of your loses nor does it penalize you for losing (unless you're playing ranked). Imo the single player is good for getting a hand on control and movement but it might not transfer too well to multiplayer. Things in single player don't move as fast as multiplayer and the AI is nowhere close to how real players play. Just have fun and don't take things too serious.

The amount of slots are dependent on the rating on the gear and as you level more, higher rating gears will be available to you in shop. You could also order it from spyke if you see someone with a gear you want. Also, once you hit level 20, spyke can add slots to you gear for sea snail or 30,000 coins.

You'll be fine. The singleplayer is decent for teaching you mechanics but aside from the bosses (and maybe the Octolings) nothing really even tries to be challenging. Enemies are totally oblivious to you when you're swimming around as a squid and that just doesn't work in MP. Don't be afraid to jump in to MP, though. You're only gonna get better by playing.

A lot of the tips you got are pretty good. I'd argue the "rush to the middle and ignore your base because you can paint it later" thing, but that is one of those ideas that gets argued constantly and no one agrees. Just find a weapon type you like and stick with it while you learn the ins and outs of the game. And give the gyro controls a try. They're weird at first but if you use them through the single player they become second nature pretty quick and they help a lot.

Either way, don't stress about the multiplayer once you start. Splatoon is a low stress game (for some of us) and just have fun with it. Feel free to ask any questions in the thread, these people are pretty okay (except walkman, he sucks and smells weird).

Just to add to this, you can't order Amiibo gear from Spyke. He also sometimes finds the item with the exact same sub abilities that the item you ordered had. While it can be cool it also makes the item's cost skyrocket and while money isn't hard to come by you might not want to throw down like 50k for it. Luckily that doesn't happen often.

I'm seeing a lot more gold dynamo rollers doing that

and it's surprisingly effective

Yup. Guy stacked his with a handful of Power boosts and is killer on a tight area map. The spray is so wide.

I still get too close thinking standard roller and that guy wiped people out in 1 flick.

And the good sub and special it comes with.

MK8 will be a good place to restart, it was like hitting reset on the series in a lot of ways. be prepared for the trolling though, it's Splatoon x 100 >.>

I've played it but it was for a weekend when my brother and his gf visited some time last year. I really enjoyed the game but uh... I'll be spending a lot of time in the single player before I play online, much less with GAF people. Last one I played was the SNES game. I'm a wee bit rusty.

Soo I kinda wanted to buy the amiibo pack and the game. Impossible right?

I've seen it for $60ish some places, rounds out to about $20 a figure which isn't terrible considering that's a $7 "you missed preordering it" fee instead of the $17 you see on a lot of figures.

I had a $25 gift card from my bank's rewards program, so I grabbed a boxed squid single from Japan for $13 out of my own pocket :3

I've gotten pretty good at outmanouvering rollers, sometimes running backwards and shooting works, other times sneaking to their flank/back works too.

But head-to-head in close quarters roller almost always beats me. If I see 3+ rollers on the opposing team I usually know I'm done for

Pork Mackerel but on other maps I feel I can toy with rollers so I guess it evens out.

Ah, the splatfest got postponed for you guys, that's a bummer. On the bright side, I can join you guys when the new map releases. New map hype.

also unfortunate is that I'm pretty sure the 3-map rotation will become standard once every region has had their splatfest. if that is true we'll probably have to wait an extra week or two.

Probably won't be on when the new map drops, my nephew is playing the game currently. He loves this game, but doesn't have a Wii U lol.

I'll be on later tonight though.

Oh really why do you think that?
Geez I wonder why the sudden cancellation... Such a bummer.
It's actually really good for me since I have a lot of work to do this weekend but even then :(

just seems to be how they're rolling this stuff out coupled with the fact that japan had the 3-map rotation for their splatfest but obviously had to switch back to the 2-map rotation because they're worldwide again. plus they seem to be releasing a new map on the eve of every splatfest. kelp dome before japan's, bluefin depot before ours except it got delayed, and hopefully camp triggerfish before europe's. so there will be enough maps by then.
