Killer Instinct announced for PC

People like Steam's community; Steam's feature-set (trading cards, Steam workshop for mods, launching from Big Picture Mode); Steam's sales ecosystem and the price pressure to get good discounts; Steam's infrastructure for cross-platform support for other OSes; and just not having to run multiple clients on their system. They can also be reasonably sure that Steam is not going to be abandoned by Valve, leaving their purchases hanging. I think given WP7 and GFWL (or even MS's handling of gaming software in W8--stuff like Galactic Reign, Gunstringer Dead Man Running, Zombies!!!, Rocket Riot 3D, The Harvest, etc.), people may have some reason to feel unsafe with MS--the response is typically "Yes, but this is the new thing! We're not going to abandon it".

Also worth noting: Developers can generate Steam keys 100% for free, so if MS did want to sell Steam keys on their own store, they could do so without giving Valve the 30%.

I find it hard to believe that if you actually wanted to know these things you wouldn't have been able to figure them out, but charitably assuming this is new information to you, now you know!

Are you suggesting that I was being disingenuous for asking? Perhaps I could have "figured it out" but I assumed this community of people who clearly hold Steam in high regard, would be as good a place to seek that information as any other...

Anyway, thanks for the info. It makes sense. the last time I played a game on PC, it was minesweeper. so no, I was genuinely unaware of the many of the benefits of Steam (other than its reputation for heavy discounts) nor was I aware of the options publishers have when selling games through Steam.

I hope however MS chooses to publish it, people adopt it en mass because it truly is great game, that will only get better with a large cross-connected community.

The reason i want it on steam is because i don't want even more clients and i don't trust most companies. I already have steam and blizzard and those are the only two companies i trust in general. MS put AOE on steam and more so i don't see why they would not try and put KI as well. I'm sorry but if it's not on steam i won't purchase it.

Should putting the game on Steam in anyway effect MS' intention to have PC players playing against Xbox players over Xbox live?

nope, steam games aren't required to use steamworks

but the cross-bought items won't appear on Steam unless we either A. sign to our Windows Live accounts in-game or B. link our Steam accounts to Microsoft's site

Nah, Steam doesn't place any restrictions on publisher running their own services in the software (although seemingly if you sell additional content, they want a cut of that too).

Rather than it affected MS' ability to combine it with XBL, it's more likely to alter the interaction between PC players and Xbox players. With a single form of communication, the two parts of the community would likely interact with each other more, in things like party chat, or sending invites, adding friends etc. If it sits under Steam however, I can imagine a significant number of Steam player would continue to use Steam features instead, whilst seeing the Xbox players as a separate sub-community of sorts.

Why don't you play them? Do you not enjoy them?
I mean I played the first 3 Tekken games to hell as a kid but aren't fighting games these days just fun for casuals on release and then are only populated by hardcore players 2 weeks later. I just wondered if the reason why KI was popular was because it wasn't so.. brutal?

Hmm... it's probably worth trying it out for free, and seeing how you get along with it. I'd say it's a lot simpler than Tekken (but these days, most fighters are). It having a free rotating character helps provide a continuous wave of newbies too, so it's not quite like many other fighters where it sells loads for two months, and then new blood dies out leaving only the dedicated players.

I think it's easier to get into, especially if you do Dojo mode which is an indepth tutorial.

Aha...

I really don't see how MS can win here. Clearly, they would like to bolster their own services, but many of the features of Live are already offered in Steam.

The most exciting part of this news (for me) is Cross-Play but that feature would likely be underutilized if people are sticking with Steam for 1) Steams community and community features and 2) because they don't want to bother with yet another account.

MS has created a situation where PC gamers simply don't trust or need them. And even if they have become genuinely trustworthy in this space, no one would know (or care) because they're already more than satisfied with Steam.

I guess the best thing they could do is sell the game in both Stores, but give an extra content incentive for purchasing from the Win10. Maybe they could lure people to the dark side that way...

Hmmm... I'll definitely give the demo a try.

Got an email from the KI forums
I remember signing up a while ago for that pc interest poll

Fable Legends on PC won't require paying for playing online so KI also shouldn't. Microsoft isn't going to try and charge for MP again.

The major advantage Microsoft has is that every Windows 10 install has their store front and centre, pre-installed with ads in the metro dashboard area. Gamers don't really have to go out of their way to get into that ecosystem, especially since Windows 10 is free and will likely be the most used desktop and laptop OS by the end of the year.

I can kind of see why Valve would find that threatening, the main thing they're lacking is content and focus for it.

I think it's more Valve having such a stranglehold over PC gaming right now than Microsoft wanting to reboot its' PC gaming business that's going to cause Microsoft trouble in getting a foothold for gamers' mind/marketshare. It's going to take more than Minesweeper, Solitar, KI, Gears and Fable to change minds and spark competition again.

Isn't W10 only free for the first year though? I also seriously doubt W10 will be the most used OS by the end of the year or maybe ever. W7 is like XP where users will be there for years to come.

Most Windows 7 users will probably be Windows 10 users by the end of the year. That's the whole idea of making the upgrade free. They'll make sure every Window 7 user is aware that they should be upgrading. Any new users will have no reason to install Windows 7 in the first place.

Let's hope that the PC version is pushed out in due time. They have already shown the PC version before (it was the one with motionblur before launch if I am not mistaken)... so I can imagine the release is at least (on a technical level) not as far away as their textual stream implies. Coming out "later this year" sounds like quite a long time from now.

I cannot wait to see this game in 4K DSR.

Seriously, this game will look astounding without black crush and with an above native resolution.

I am hoping it is released next month or August at latest. PC folks already waited long enough to play it :<

So, the email has me worried, do you guys think that KI will require an active XBL Gold membership to get, or play online? MS couldn't make that same mistake twice right?

It may require a membership, but that will apparently be free on PC...

I get that. But it seems like the overwhelming majority of core PC gamers ,the ones who would be interested in a game like Killer Instict as opposed to Cut the Rope, won't see opening the steam app as an inconvenience...storefront placement won't be nearly enough to sway them... Still, MS has to start somewhere if they want to get PC gamers into their ecosystem, I suppose.

I thought this was already confirmed to be a 2016 release? Information about this release has been kind of scattershot, but I remember seeing that mentioned somewhere (possibly from one of the developer's Twitter feeds)?

I looked around and found nothing about the game's release date. That would be unfortunate if true.

For a while I partially assumed it'd receive something of a late Summer release to potentially coincide with the launch of Windows 10, but the lack of info makes me think it's going to be a while. Maybe it'll coincide with Season 3?

I don't think they confirmed a date. Maybe at gamescom, seems like MS is planning lots of things for august.

What a fail if it's win10 live! No one makes accounts for anything other than steam!

League of legends? Ghost town.

Battle.net? Unheard of.

It's really simple to have an account for just a single game you play, people do it all the time.

Hope Iron Galaxy can do a decent job and redeem themselves with the PC version.

My hype right now is zero. Double Helix did an amazing job. Passing it over to someone else to add bits here and there is understandable but can they can handle this? Even if they get everything working, if it requires a 980 to run at 900p or even 1080p there will be riots.

They did season 2, so I wouldn't be so concerned with KI PC. They should have a lot of time and MS doesn't want to fall flat on its' face while pimping Windows 10.

KI in IG's hands has seen huge improvements, and really awesome, varied, interesting additions.

Don't take Arhkham Knights quality as a reflection of IG's abilities. There could be so many reasons why it came out poorly that aren't simply "IG is bad at porting."

How well would a MBP run this?
I was thinking of getting an XB1 just for this game but now it seems I can just play it on the computer and stick to one current gen console (PS4).

You do realize IG was responsible for all of Season 2 right? They're also responsible for upping the resolution from 720 to 900p (or whatever it's at now). They did a lot more than just "add bits here and there".
