SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

$47 million to create Shenmue 1 and 2, create all the orchestral music for both games, create the graphics engine from scratch, for all the R&D including traveling, to write up the stories, to pay for all the localisation including english and Japanese voice acting, to do the marketing too. Yup, that sounds right to me and now they can cut down 3/4 of the cost for Shenmue III as most of the stuff such as tools and assets are already available and Sony will cover the marketing. So it makes sense for this game to be funding around $10 - 15 million to get the Shenmue we really want.

equivalent to $67 million in 2015

This was 15-16 years ago. I dunno man I just dunno

Absolutely, I'd take a Shenmue 1 size map that's dense and detailed with interesting fleshed out characters over a bigger map thats sparse in comparison.

I believe this is what Yu Suzuki was implying anyway. Big is not the answer, compact and highly detailed is the way to go... like Tokyo. haha.

Man, GAF and games. It's amazing to know fans as dedicated as you guys are still around. What a week it has been for us fans of Japanese games.

I've never played Shenmue, but I will pledge the minimum to show some support. Now, if they announce 1 & 2 HD and a physical PS4 copy....

Btw. At the rate the KS is tracking, it wouldnt be surprised if it reaches $6.5 - $7 M. But if they are aiming for at least $10M, then they need to get their act together and add several more pledges, PayPal, and more daily updates.

The tiers seem bad and not some cool stuff. People need to learn how to run a Kickstarter by having it exactly like Bloodstained. This campaign really needs PS4 physical copies, and it would help tremendously.

Do we want this money to go to the game, or to go to trinkets for the backers?

I still strongly believe it is unfair to say that. You say it's equivalent to $67 million but the actual games on a separate aren't that high compared to others, my friend. Remember what I said what $47 million actually went into and inflation be damn, honestly, for even that doesn't hold water as there are no numbers to base this on, i.e. its hearsay.

Remember this for it's important. For Shenmue III, there is...:

1) No need to work on the graphics engine - Usually, R&D on graphic engines cost millions so that aspect is gone.
2) Research is already finished as it was done in 1997.
3) He still got access to old assets that he stated that he will use.
4) Most of the musical scores are finished back in 1998, now it will be an additional score here and there and mainly execution within the game along with the voice acting.
5) He is creating ONE game, not two.
6) The world will not be massive like GTA IV as Shenmue 1, finished in 1999, was never that big in comparison but it was amazingly compact (quality over quantity).
7) The game will be made on the Unreal Engine 4 - that tool is so easy to use compared to the yester-years.
8) Remember, there are two Gods in the games industry, Shigeru Miyamoto from Nintendo and Yutaka Suzuki (Yu Suzuki, ex-Sega). This is Yu Suzuki we are talking about here so give him the goods and he will deliver! Have faith!
9) If you haven't backed yet, just remember that you won't lose out as your backing ($60 or more) means that you will automatically get the game! No lost! :)

I hope that helps, my friend. When you think about it, between $10 - 15 million is all he needs to make the game to full vision, and Sony will do the rest which will be an insane marketing campaign and, no doubt, provide the cost for a physical disk.

FAQ of the kickstarter have been updated with this

Can you make an open world game for just $2 million?

No, we cannot make an open world game for $2 million. Shenmue will be produced using both the funds raised from the Kickstarter and through other funding sources already secured by Ys Net Inc. We are very sorry, but due to contractual obligations, details of outside investments will not be disclosed.

Not sure. But Bloodstained did have physical retail copies so I don't understand why Shenmue 3 can't.

Bloodstained always had a publisher (Deep Silver). Shenmue 3 doesn't have one as far as we know for the PS4 version.

I bet that's why there's no physical PS4 version for now. Indies can self-publish on PSN.

Sony should step up and make a retail release happen.

I didn't closely follow the Bloodstained Kickstarter. Are their physical discs actual licensed, pressed PS4 games or are they just burned discs with the pkg files that you install?

The negativity campaign by the likes of Polygon angers me but this thread makes me feel better about the dedication you all have.

Seriously, WTF is with everyone without all the facts, and it's damaging to the Kickstarter.

Shenmue fans have been crapped on for years in terms of hope and now it's like, "Look happy Shenmue fans! Let's take a fat dump in their mouths!"

I'll be happy with the $5 million goal being reached, because 10 seems absurdly pie in the, sky never gonna happen. I don't see the Kickstarter passing 6.

Depends on the Shenmue team's campaign, SONY PR, and how much they adjust the kickstarter page. If they get everything right with Sony's support then I'm guarantee that the funding will go beyond $16 million, but if it sticks to as is then it will be $5.5 - 6 million.

Bloodstained did a little more than $5.5 million, I would have figured this would easily go pass $6 million in comparison.

I mean, I'll be happy to be wrong about it, and the 3k jacket tier seemed to create a nice bump, I'm just thinking that the majority of people who care have probably donated already. At this point, I'd be happy with a game that took place on a scale of the first game (though obviously disappointing compared to what it could be). If we get something like the second game, two large areas with an epilogue chapter, that would be amazing.

it's a nice damn jacket

yu suzuki has already said he planned to have shenmue 3 be a smaller experience more like the original from the start, which is fine. three areas is enough, but they need to be well created and dense with detail. that's where the money needs to go.

Just curious, besides lending prime spot for yu suzuki in their prime time conference, what other Sony PR do you expect sony to unleash?

I'm still waiting for a physical PS4 release.

If not announced I will get the 60$/100$ tier at the very least, close to the end of the campaign. I bet (hope) there are plenty of people thinking like me.

I think the word "expect" is the wrong word to use, but Sony has "many" channels that they can utilise that doesn't involve a stage. For example, their youtube channel that has a silly amount of subscribers and viewers, their own PS4 channel, their website, newsletter, I can go on... In the end, it is down to Sony to be bothered to make use of them for Shenmue III or not.

Lol each time they do something for shenmue in their channel amount of 'warning' they have to say would be hilarious.

"Disclaimer: We are not paying the majority of the development believe it or not"

$10 million???? That's impossible.

Shenmue 3 ? no way it can happen.

The moral here is to hope.. and to do everything to make it happen.

I alsop read many "no way" post when the amplitude kickstarter was launched , yet it reached his goal.. So let 's just HOPE for the best.

There are trolls to be sure but not everybody who is critical of the Kickstater and/or isn't as emotionally invested in Shenmue as you are is out to get you or trying to shit on Shenmue fans.

Likewise. Sony should just do it (because it's not like they are doing Vita titles...)

Also, I'm surprised that Polygon isn't a banned site on here yet :/ Didn't read their article but I'm assuming they're all like "oh don't worry Sony's got it, no need to fund!!"

it's been 15 years and i've just seen a cutscene in shenmue i've never seen before

the game that keeps on giving

I've finished Shenmue more than a dozen times and the last time I did I got a scene where I came home and your two friends are waiting for you there because they're concerned about what was going on with Ryo. Don't know how I triggered it but it was pretty cool.

Hell, I'd take a Shenmue point and click if it means the story had a chance of finishing. Thoughultimately i really hope the funds are there to make something special. I love the little bit in the pitch video, it has me fucking stoked.

There are still 27 days left. We gotta believe that $10 million is achievable. Keep spreading the word and keep Shenmue 3 in people's minds.
