SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

Well I've paid up twice now, $300 and another account for $29, that said, I will prob go more if the tiers from $500-$3000 are awesome enough, I just hope this Kickstarter has some good surprises instore for us.

I think I just figured out a way to include forklift racing and other nostalgic moments from Shenmue and Shenmue II in Shenmue III. It's super simple, completely optional and doesn't change game flow or feel out of place.

When Ryo goes to sleep, the option "Choose dream" pops up. Different dreams can be available at different times, at random, and even be added in later via DLC.

Perfect for a stretch goal as well.

Call the system "Dream casting."

Did they say anything about going the Star Citizen route and continuing to get funding past the Kickstarter? That would be the smartest thing if they need more funding. I'm sure I'd be able to give a lot more between now and the next 2 years.

I think it's totally possible for him to get to $10 million if the fans really try, and maybe if he gets a few big fans with deep pockets to donate...

For real Notch, where are you when we need you!?

I want to say Notch had something going on with using 10 million for Psychonauts 2 or something years ago and then decided against it. I think even for him just plunking down a big pile of cash is a bit much... still... it'd be really great if he did.

Well, I tried...

So it needs another $7M or so in around 4 weeks? Isn't that, like, really unachievable?

I mean, I don't know how KS projects trend in terms of funding really, but if its only at $3M after the huge E3 reveal and exposure, expecting several million more now seems hard.

I am a huge Shenmue fan and it absolutely guts me their handling of this campaign has removed my ability to believe in the integrity of this project. I wish it well and hope it turns out great, I just won't be backing it up front.

The handling of the kickstarter has been fine, you just have a beef of some kind with not knowing exactly how much money Sony is putting in. It really doesn't matter. This is the only question you need answered:

Do you want a Shenmue III or not?

If the answer is YES, then buy into it now for as much money as you can / want to donate, if not, then stay out of it and enjoy life. This is our only chance, and we're God Damned lucky that Sony has gotten us this far honestly, so it's up to us the fans to make this happen as fucking large and loud as we possibly can.

The proceeds from the views from Shenmue trailer should be going to the funds.

We should get the fan made HD remaster official and published then use those funds towards Shenmue 3 as well

Btw, we can all help a little by promoting this obviously via social media.

I would like to Tweet out the actual KS link every now and then but there KS doesn't seem to have Twitter share on its pages. So I've been sharing the...announcement video recently.

It's not like the game won't get made if it doesn't reach 10m. The minimum he said he required to make the most basic version of the game is 2m. We are currently just under 3.5m with 4 weeks still left to go. Even if it doesn't reach 10 it will be well above the minimum by then.

Alas, the problem there is that it sounds like 10m is what is needed to make a game that is worthy of the Shenmue name. Less than that you're going to get a game with the title Shenmue 3 slapped on it (not necessarily bad, just not in the spirit of the first two games).

I really do think people are taking it too seriously. It's no coincidence he was speaking in even increments of $5MM and I doubt he has any idea what the game he exactly wants would cost. I think the point he was trying to make was that he wants AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE so give it up ppl.
Well he's talking about specific stretchgoals I think so I don't know what the $10m will include since we don't know what's after $5m, interestingly he also mentions $5m as being something he really wants to do. That's the character perspective system. I think he's mentioned it somewhere maybe the Famitsu interview or the French interview. Or somewhere else I can't remember.

I still cannot fucking believe shenmue 3 is happening. Its all I have been able to think about, day and night, since the announcement. I actually dreamed about shenmue last night.

I just cant believe it.
I've had the OST CDs on repeat while working all week. Honestly I have been pretty hyped to the point I might be getting obnoxious. I think I'll try to tone it down here as well as I am starting to think it's doing more harm than good.
I'm still spamming the hell out of social media. Sorry guys.

This guy should redo the presentation, I like his banners a lot

That's awesome.

Any chance we could get the thread title changed to "needs 10 million for full experience" or something like that

I dunno but more emphasis on more being needed for a full shenmue is the right thing to do.

Sure new fans may be more skeptical to pledge but it will encourage a bigger push after the damage of partnering up with Sony and making it seem like they're backing it in a decent way.

Perfect opportunity to link him to a playthrough of 'What's Shenmue'

Can people not. I know people are passionate about this, but when you focus that passion into harrassing someone with something they have no interest in just because they are a well known rich gaming personality, that's just obnoxous.

Capsule toys are like the perfect thing for a tier reward. I just hope I don't get Chai. And that they'll come in actual capsules.

Q: Will Shenmue III enable PayPal or a means to donate to the project when the Kickstarter ends? Projects like Star Citizen gained tens of millions in donations by allowing this.

A: I am still thinking about it, but have not decided yet.

So probably maybe?

I'm glad to see more and more folks chiming in across all manner of places to attempt to clear the air on all the ongoing bizarre notions on funding and all else that are somehow being circulated in a detrimental spirit.

I mean, I think this is the second major gaming Kickstarter project thus far that happens to have the extra complication of licensing---with the only other one that comes to mind being the Shadowrun kickstarter(s) that had to contend with Microsoft as opposed to SEGA in this case?

I vaguely recall some extremely tiny portion of folks pondering the issue in a minor sense way back then, but nothing like the inscrutable reaches I've seen these past few days on Shenmue's bid for well-deserved success at long last. I guess Shadowrun never got to be such a huge story in the same sense, so the manufactured ire-inclined never tried to latch on to avail of the spotlight...

It's a joke. Now if people want to actually do it that is beyond my control. If my intention was to do it, I well… Would.

Edit: More of a title joke 'I don't know what Shenmue is' 'Well luckily for you SEGA has you covered'

ive never played shenmue? is it like sleeping dogs? cause then i will back it

No, not like Sleeping Dogs. The closest game to compare it to would be the Yakuza games but even they aren't like it, Shenmue is more laid back, more atmospheric, more little details and things to do, with much better music.

Honestly I can't think of a modern or recent game to compare it to directly. Lots of games have parts of Shenmue in them but there isn't anything completely like it.

ive never played shenmue? is it like sleeping dogs? cause then i will back it

It has group fight sequences and Kung-Fu that might be considered similar to Shenmue. Overall Sleeping Dogs is much more analogous to GTA than Shenmue. If you enjoy experiencing games in an Eastern setting though, Shenmue would be right up your alley.

Absolutely, I'd take a Shenmue 1 size map that's dense and detailed with interesting fleshed out characters over a bigger map thats sparse in comparison.

As awesome as Shenmue II was, I remember my impressions at that time. And, specially in the Hong Kong chapters, I was missing a bit the intimacy and the density of the first game. I specially missed a more dramatic difference between day and night. In Hong Kong and Kowloon shops opened until late, and streets were sprawling at any hour, unlike Dobuita or the Yokosuka harbor in the first game.

So, I think even in a "normal" Dreamcast or Xbox Shenmue III released in 2003 I would have welcomed going back to a small town with more detail, less people and closer personal relationships. Even if only for the sake of variety.

So if 2017 Shenmue III turns that way, I will be happy too.

I am one of the few who would have donated $5m if I have the money now but sadly all I could do is help promote it.
Just shamefully asking some youtubers (pewdiepie/smosh) to help get the words out.
Hopefully game sites would talk about it everyday for a month so people will all be aware of the kickstarter existing. LoL
#saveshenmue people!!!

Everyone else is covering what the game plays like and why it was so ground breaking, but it also has a killer story. Where most video games focus on medieval fantasy or sci fi or other common video game settings, Shenmue is a chinese kung fu epic. Think stuff like Bruce Lee's Way of the Dragon or Fist of Fury. It approaches Kung Fu epics with the same care for detail that Virtua Fighter takes with fighting games.

This is a good semi-spoilerish recap of the story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_zB-R-Dbw8

It's just a quick music video of a bunch of action clips from the game, so you won't understand the story just by watching it, but it shows off a lot of the action and cinematic style.

It's a setting not often tackled in modern, cinematic, AAA games and that makes Shenmue feel like a breath of fresh air.

Incidentally, that video shows just how incredible Shenmue's graphics were. At 1080p they still look good, despite the game being so ancient by now.

God I hope this gets the funding it needs to be a worthy sequel. No game has affected my life as much as Shenmue. I played both games at launch at the age of 13-14, and I instantly became enthralled with Asian culture. At around 20 I visited Hong Kong and stayed in Kowloon, and a couple years later I visited Japan for the first time. Now I live in Tokyo with no plans to leave. Last week I visited Taiwan and spent a good 20 minutes at the National Palace Museum just looking at Chinese mirrors, haha. And it's all thanks to Yu.
Edit: I forgot that last month I took a ferry to Yokosuka harbor. The area is still famous for gaudy bike jackets.

You're living the dream!

Also, whilst everyone is on the subject of Shenmue, if they put their DC disks into a PC there are a bunch of artwork, wallpapers I think and concept art.
They are in the 'Omake' folder

Much of it is probably because the first one had more of an impact, but the locations of the first game were more quaint and memorable, weren't they? The change for 2 fits with the story though. Yokosuka is your home town, you're meant to feel comfortable and familiar with it. Then you go to Hong Kong. where...Oh hell, now I'm remembering the photographer and his dopey ass voice. I'd best stop trying to remember things about Shenmue 2 for a while. Y'know, I actually didn't mind airing out the books. That song was so splendidly joyous, merry and blissful. Airing out the books > forklifting pallets.

But yeah, it'll be interesting to find out what the feel of the areas in Shenmue 3 will be. Suzuki certainly seems to be going for the smaller but deeper angle. Which I agree seems the way to go, at least in all the ways I can think of.

I don't think I will buy the game if it wont allow me to engross myself in the world Shenmue. Just experiencing the story is not enough, I really want to explore, take on side quests and talk to npc's like the original games. Gonna be so bummed if it doesn't get to 10 million. Might as well not exist if it's not a full on sequel that lives up to the brand heritage.

Do we have one ? I mean I tried to search on youtube but first page didn't showed anything "good" for me.
I think it will be nice to have a recap video like that for the campaign.

ShenmueDojo is livestreaming a playthrough of Shenmue 1 & 2 right now

Thank you, I just tweeted it.
