I want to see how they're going to do Red XIII seeing Seto. One of my favorite moments in ALL OF GAMING!

Avalanche seemed like 5 people in the original, and I can't think of instances otherwise..?

But I wouldn't be surprised if they expanded Avalanche into being an expanded rebel group in a remake.
If they take the compilation into account, which I think is likely considering that Verendus said they want to add more of Zack into the game and the fact that it's been the primary exposure to the VII-verse over the past ten years or so, then it wouldn't be surprising if they add elements of old Avalanche to the game.

Barret is just some guy who ends up sympathizing with their cause after BC. The link between Elfe's Avalanche and Barret's Avalanche is pretty thin, other than Barret claiming that his version was formed in Cosmo Canyon (IIRC). If they do try to tie them together, it will be interesting to see.

I also thought Tifa was Marlene's mom.

I saw the first few hours of FF7 at my friend's house in 1997 (pretty much all of Midgar), but wasn't able to play the full game for myself until the PC version in 98. Who Marlene belonged to was a major point of contention for me, during that year. She was a puzzle piece that didn't properly fit into my narrow understanding of the plot.

The revelation of her identity coinciding with one of the best parts of the first disc (if not the entire game) was pretty mind blowing for me, back then. There was a lot of build up to it. It was kind of a weird way to experience the game, that way.

Barret confronting Dyne is one of my favorite parts of the game.

I can't wait to experience again in the remake.

1-on-1 boss fights are always ridiculously memorable, aren't they?

FF7 has a lot of them. I'm partial to Cloud's fight against Rufus and Dark Nation, myself... even if that is technically 2-on-1. :P

I think these are shinra soldiers from the Remake:

They really look more like Biggs and Wedge to be honest.

ugh why did change it? I hate their new look across the compilation.

lol pause can we talk about how absurd it was for Cloud to start randomly strutting the fuck around without his helmet in Crisis Core

even when I was like 14 I saw the scene where he's standing in a line saluting Zack and he's the ONLY ONE with his helmet off and just laughed like "wtf is this shit"

Avalanche in BC

They look too much like guerrilla soldiers to be official military personnel.

I totally agree on Avalanche, I think these are Jesse and Biggs or other recruits from the Wutai base, conducting some reconnaissance on Sector 1 (Copter may be the Turks) or a mission on a previous sector with a fellow member which had to be replaced by Cloud later on.

Just thinking the (redone?) Avalanche logo is on the shoulder, shape of an 'A'

He didn't want to fuck up his perfect hair man. Same reason all the SOLDIERs don't wear helmets.

What if they delayed the FFVII port to this winter because they want to include an early demo of the remake with it. That would be pretty good.

I mean, it's a good and familiar concept, but it was so obvious they would do that and was done very poorly.

It can only get better in the remake.

Hmm, it really worked for me. But I was already heavily invested in Red XIII as a character, which helped. I agree it was somewhat predictable, but it still felt genuine, and I thought they played it as well as the game's other emotional moments.

So, because you see in the time span of two seconds a helicopter flying over, and them hiding behind a corner, that implies that they must be hiding from the helicopter?

No, it's because the helicopter spotlight passes by them, and they're very clearly hiding from it.

I really hope that they'll get some really good composers who can read/understand mood to re-arrange the music. My god the music... The wait will be a long one indeed.

The entire time I was at Cosmo Canyon I was waiting for something more about Seto. It was really obvious that they would go that route. Eventually it did, and I wasn't a bit surprised. It was genuine but it could have been done better.

If not Uematsu himself I'd be okay with Yoko Shimomura throwing her hat in the ring.

There needs ta be a second battle against Rufus! Feels like a waste for him to be a one an done. Rufus & the Turks are pretty much the rival group of Clouds party so he needs to jump into battle alongside one or two of 'em at some point.

Speaking of the Turks, if Square wants 'em to like them so much then they need not be the ones condemning all of Sector 7 to death. Reno & Tseng both act like completely uncaring asses when thats going down an never show remorse or hesitation for doing so.

There's a speed painting series done by a dude named Lap Pun Cheung that is really good and gives a nice idea of what the game could look like IMO.

You can see the rest of the gallery here. The dude is good. I really hope that the remake captures the atmosphere and charm of the original like these are able to.

Did he just do these recently?

Did he just do these recently?

Not really. It's several months old.

It's very good, though. I'm happy it was done before the remakes since it gives a good comparison.

I don't think a FFVII remake has to capture that exact faithful tone, though. I'd be happy with whatever tone it has as long as it's good.

Did I just see someone call Red XIII's part poorly done?

It's by far one of the best scenes in the game.

It was good, and added to the game, but I don't think it was delivered very well. Especially with Bugenhagen's dialogue with Nanaki. The whole moment felt prolonged and I could see it coming a mile away.

Did they ever say what happened to Red XIII's mom?

You know one thing I've always noticed that VIII did and was completely influenced by VII was it's version of a LT. The roles are incredibly similar when you look at them. Rinoa(Aeris), who was in love with a man named Seifer(Zack) who want's to become a SeeD and is extremely similar to Squall, is the new girl that has a huge impact on Squall(Cloud) and Quistis(Tifa) is the childhood friend who has a crush on Squall.

I mean, obviously both games end up handling the way it plays out completely differently(VII gives you a choice) but it's just a funny thing to see from the game right after.

Fair enough. I just feel that certain types of emotional moments don't need to be couched in twists or surprises to be effective. Better they're portrayed with honesty.

There are a number of similar moments in 7 that also work on the same level. Like when you go upstairs at Elmyra's house and Barrett is hugging Marlene and she's saying his whiskers tickle. It borders on sappy, but it's portrayed so simply that it works.

These moments are particularly resonant for me now as a dad though. That could be coloring my original memories....

The Turks maintain a fairly consistent level of sadism throughout the game. Sometimes I forget that Reno straight up murders Don Corneo by letting him fall off the Wutai monuments. It's cold as fuck. He's completely irredeemable. The protagonists were merely going to mutilate his genitals.

They have their moments of charm, but they're not supposed to be "likeable". You feel sympathy for Aeris, when she cries over Tseng's near-fatal wound, but just for her. If he had died right there (like the original English translation wrongfully implied), he more than deserved it.

Eh... I think FF7:AC kinda changes that. How can you not like Reno fighting against someone he knows he cannot beat!

The old horny man survived the fall, though. But yeah, Reno fully intended for him to die right there.

Interesting, definitely forgotten that detail. The Wutai scene was fresh in my mind because I just replayed it a few days ago.

That whole Wutai sequence is one of the most memorable parts of the game, one has to wonder if they will just end up making Vincent and Yuffie mandatory characters. Obviously it's canon that they join your party, as they're in Advent Children...
