Batman: Arkham Knight On PC Is Not Very Good [UP: WB suspends future sales until fix]

Who is responsible for this mess of a port?

I thought "oh it's just a guy on reddit stiring shit up" Then I saw the video and though "oh someone made a fake video and called the channel NVIDIA" then I checked the channel and it was legit. You can definitely hear high pitched speed up thug vocals. Not sure how though because even recorded at 30fps the animations would play out properly right, not half speed. So doubling a 30fps clip to 60fps in that case would result in not just sped up audio but sped up animation, because 30fps isn't half as fast as 60, it's the same speed just half the visual information.

I'm betting they actually played and recorded the game at half speed (which isn't actually that tricky from a technical perspective), but they did not bother to slow down the audio.

Heck of a lot easier than making a competent port!

You would duplicate frames, but then that looks awful too, or there is some sort of interpolation which should add blur between frames. Something's not right either way.

Batman's grunt sound normal to me, just the enemies sound like chipmunks

edit: wrong part of the video. the sound of the enemy unit impacting the ground sounds normal though

or they slowed down playback of audio files as well but missed the ones pertaining to enemy voices (tin foil hat)

Ah right. That makes sense. And you can't hear the other audio, just the thugs so it could be they forgot to mute voices? You can sort of hear the crate smash too and that sounds sped up. Wow. I'm honestly shocked. I don't usually go down these silly conspiracy holes but I can see something here.

I'm kind of curious what the overall reaction was from Twitch/Youtuber personalities. Some people seem to think they're more honest and less susceptible to corruption than the traditional games media, but as you get more and more of this direct social marketing, I think that trust should quickly begin to evaporate. I don't really keep up with that crowd though, so for all I know they made a ruckus about it and I'm spitting nonsense. I thought I remembered seeing a ton of people streaming Arkham on PC but I don't remember seeing much commentary about it getting around.

Okay, I saw something about a Gaffer Calling us babies for complaining about the port, and then being outed as WB Games staff or something? Did that actually happen, cause damn!

This + the 4gb marketing makes me want to go team red forever.

I really don't want/find it hard to believe nvidia would be complicit in a 30 fps shit port.

nvidia is the greatest company ever though

Best thing is when "Team Green" fanboys seemingly act like they wish AMD wasn't even around. A GPU marketplace with only Nvidia in it would be hilariously depressing.

ATI makes shitty fucking drivers. I've spent literal DECADES dealing with their shit.

So what do I do?

Go with the terrible quality hardware or the unethical company?

AMD should stop doing a shit job then and actually start competing.

tbf Nvidia's gameworks isn't doing them any favors right now :/.

Aside from that I just find it a little saddening that the PC gaming graphics company could possibly be complicit with this port job rather than taking their name off of it.

So glad the dlc made me wait for the GOTY edition. Hopefully after a few patches and possibly driver updates things will improve.

I can't believe that video was doctored. Wouldn't the animations be sped up too?

That was my initial reaction too, although it's totally possible that they played it at half (or something) speed with a consistent framerate and then sped the video footage up to appear "normal," which would explain why only the sound is really noticeably different.

I have to wonder how can a situation like this can happen. It's a big game for WB and the ports for the previous entries in the series were competent. The absence of some basic features like higher resolution textures, unlimited framerate and AO is bizarre to say the least. The fact they released a game where the game stutters that badly is also puzzling.

Could it be that they ran into optimization problems and the only way they could make it for launch was to turn off and lower a bunch of settings and even then it still performs poorly? I mean the game's own benchmark tool allow FPS to go over 30 but the game itself doesn't. It also seems reading the other thread that unlocking the framerate actually increases the issues. Something is definitely fishy there.

This is pretty terrible. I really regret choosing it over the PS4 version, even with a Titan X. Hiccups, stuttering, missing visual features, it's upsetting across the board.

I'm in the same boat, not even a Titan X can save this game. I finally got to fire the game up last night and whilst it is pretty much sitting at around 90FPS unlocked, the micro stutters are unbearable.

Really disappointed with the state of some of these PC ports as of late. MKX, Revelations 2, the list goes on.

each subsequent AAA PC release just makes me want to see gameworks die even more, there has to be a better solution than this proprietary bs (i own a 980 if it makes a difference)

bonus AMD's richard huddy shitting on gameworks

I also really wish Nvidia would just stay the hell out of software in general (with the exception of drivers and their own driver interfaces). Nothing good has come of them mucking around in proprietary physics tech, the performance is horrible and its very obviously just a tool for them to say "look you need the latest and greatest!"

I cannot wait for next week to come. By then we'll either have the full story, or we'll have heard nothing and people will be frothing.

By the way, I don't know if it was in this thread or not because everything is kind of blending together, but there were some posters suggesting that one of the groups involved (WB, IG, RS) should be tossing another group under the bus and pass the blame along, or snitching on the entire situation. I just want to point out that this is a terrible decision as a business, as you'll quickly burn bridges not just with the one company, but maybe with others that the company is associated with.

How insane is it reading about people going for the PS4 version because it runs it better than their Titan X or 980ti

I mean think about how colossal of a fuck up a port has to he to make that possible. I know we've been talking about this for the past 2 days but its still blowing me away the game was released in this state

Jett stop trying to get rises out of people or you get banned.

Can you guys do something about the misleading OP in the "Batman: Gutted contend. False advertising. Reviews omitted this" thread?

You don't have to do this. Just interpolate frames.

A lot of people did this in the early days of Youtube 60 FPS, by interpolating frames with 30 FPS footage. Just like TV's do.

My bet is that they ran out of money. The game got delayed 7-8 months, so that's additional production time and money not initially expected. There were a load of assets to produce, both visual and auditory. Big name actors to voice key roles. Massive advertising costs. I would not be surprised if the game went way over budget. You can see on the (PS4) screen.

WB knew they would likely get the money back, but I would expect that the word from above came down to stop the bleeding any way possible anyway. No more delays, get the game out and make that money back, get back into the black ASAP.

So, one of the things to get cut was the budget for the PC version to the outside studio. No more money to get it right, no more time to get it right, get it out and make that money, reputation be dammed.

It's happened enough that I would not be surprised if it was the case here as well. Nobody ever learns how it can hurt your brand.

I can't believe that video was doctored. Wouldn't the animations be sped up too?

Ostensibly the game speed would be slowed down, then the rate the video played would be edited in post.

This is actually close to how some emulators force 60fps out of 30fps locked games.

I think this is a worse debacle than the Assassin's Creed Unity launch last year.

I wonder if they will give out season passes to pc owners or something. I have no interest in playing the game with the uneven performance and stutters now.Just playing witcher 3 instead and DMC special edition.

Welp. So that's happening. I found and bought a used PS4 version of the game. Glad I get to play the game now, glad WB won't get my money. Win win.

you know the worst part is that from what i managed to play it seemed like an actually great game, can't wait to see if the version is fixed to be on par with consoles to play it
