Warner Brothers suspends [new] purchases for PC version of Batman Arkham Knight

Im having no problems playing the game with 30 fps cap. Everything looks pretty and what not. Hope current owners get something for the trouble though.

I saw Dying Light at the top of the Steam charts a lot, as well, and that's a WB title.

Yep, that did over $900,000 by itself during the Steam Sale so their big titles in the course of 2 weeks at heavily discounted prices did over 4 million dollars. That's JUST Summer Sale money, so they obviously are getting much much more at launch when games are full priced.

WB games aren't going anywhere from PC, but they need to get their shit together no doubt

Has any company done this? Can't remember Battlefield, Watch Dogs, Unity or any game that comes to mind where the company stops people buying the game, mostly its a PR excuse and false promises to fix it soon.

I think the only time it's really happened has been dead MMOs or online games, stuff where the game literally will not function. And I use "literally" literally here... Arkham Knight functions, despite any statements otherwise. You can play it start to finish, it will just be extremely unpleasant.

So yeah, in terms of single player, AAA games that are brand new, I think this is a first. And a good precedent. There's a bugginess threshold for new games, but this is well beyond that threshold.

Honestly? Kudos to them for actually pulling the piece of shit, rather than let it flounder around in limbo until the umpteenth patch somewhat fixes everything (*cough* MCC, MKX, ACU *cough*). But also give them a slap across the face for releasing it in the first place.

(I'm so happy I decided to go with the PS4 version, wow)

So what do the sorry chumps who already bought it get as compensation?

Seems like WB assessed the situation and are now realizing its going to take a few months to fix this disaster. Many people have already given them money though. Hopefully they do something for those people.

What a colossal failure of management at some point. Someone had to be checking on the progress of the PC port...right?

I have no idea why these people couldn't have seen how obviously terrible this PC port was. How the fuck could they be so obtuse as to actually release the damn thing?

They did it because they thought they could get away with it, but because now costumers can ask for a refund for the game things are different now.

Lol at the people saying major props to them for doing this.

They fucking knew the state in which it launched and only reacted now cause of the huge gamer backlash.

I don't suspect it'll make companies treat the PC version equally to consoles. Nah. That costs money.

I think this backlash combined with Steam refunds being proven in the wild will make ALL publishers take note. Either they'll get their shit together and stop treating PC gamers like redheaded stepchildren when it comes to their "AAA" console ports, or they won't bother with PC ports at all. The latter is very unlikely considering the revenue tail for PC games is near infinite compared to console games that have an established used games market.

Ideally this may snowball into a good thing.

Yeah,
I'm predicting back on sale by Monday or Tuesday and free Season Passes all around.

Anything else would be paltry.

Then I sure hope they have something up their sleeve for those who already own it.

I'd be willing to be this is more of a failing on the QA process than the developer in question. Iron Galaxy usually does decent work.

Based on what people were reporting, this game is going to be gone for a while.

QA can flag problems but not actually do anything about them. It's up to devs to listen.

There's no way to know where the blame lies.

They listened at least. More so than EA/Maxis did with Simcity.

Or Dice did with Battlefield 4

Or Blizzard did with Diablo 3

Best you can get is a refund.

I'm sure Valve and GMG are just auto approving those at the moment.

Which is more than literally any other company has done in the same situation over the last two years. Not to give them a pass, but it definitely shows some shred of integrity compared to the publishers that continued to take money for their broken pieces of garbage.

You don't know this

Really now? You think they weren't aware of the state of the game? You think they are doing this out of the goodness of their heart? If so they should have delayed the pc version or fucking cancelled it. No, instead they released a turd and pulled it out due to the immense number of bad critics and articles talking about the failed pc version.

And now people praising them...

This has got to piss nvidia off as well though.

They pack in codes for their latest and greatest cards, the game comes out and its an absolute shit show. Nvidia uses promotions like this to showcase their graphics hardware (and all their custom gameworks stuff) so to have people buy new hardware and then find the game packed in to showcase their new toy runs like complete ass doesnt look good for nvidia.

I cant imagine they are happy. Anyone who doesnt follow gaming forums etc is likely thinking wtf my new card must be shit if this is how they are showing it off.

This may be a sign that steam refunds could be the biggest game changer PC gaming has ever seen. The idea that you can return something that isn't working, just imagine that.

Hopefully this could be the event that pushes devs to make competent PC ports for good. I'm buying all my games from steam going forward unless another distributor starts to offer refunds

Assuming GMG softens their stance a bit more on refunds given the current situation, I'm not sure what would stop me from taking advantage of that. Maybe Rocksteady coming out and saying they're going to take over the port responsibilities now. This is somewhat doubtful considering it can impact their precious 6 month timeline for DLC, not to mention certain folks at the studio after probably set for time off after shipping a game (which is fair enough). Short of that I'm not sure I have much faith in Iron Galaxy or another port house picking up the pieces of this deranged corpse of a game and turning it into something that's properly optimized. If they end of doing it successfully, then certainly kudos to them.

Personally, this is why I never mind when they delay PC versions. Taking Rockstar as an example, if they really wanted to, they could've rushed out the PC version of GTA V right alongside the current gen versions and said "eh, the framerate mostly sticks above 30 on our test GTX 970 build. I mean this is an open world game, consumers should understand performance will vary and it's not worth our time to make it run better." Instead after nearly 6 months of delays, GTA V is probably one of the best optimized open world games I've every played, and even a modest rig can get a nice looking game that runs well to boot. It's a PC version done absolutely right, and significant delays take nothing away from it IMO.

couple of things:

previously, pre-order revenue was close to a cast iron lock.with every stinker you'd get a few naggy ninnies who'd lumber on down to gamestop and demand a refund or kick up a fuss through official channels, but most would either just trade in a badly made game or have it linger in their collection like a bad smell.

steam refunds changes the dynamic here and warner have to react to it. for pre-order revenue to suddenly become an unknown quantity due to the likelihood of refunds is a terrifying thing for a publisher and they have to act decisively to confront it.

secondly:

i don't want a crack team of surgeons to try and piece this mess back together within the launch window. it's clearly rotten to its core and a mea culpa of this magnitude calls for an equally extreme solution: redo the port in-house (or atleast overseen by them) from the ground up. the only thing that can possibly bring a happy ending is if the lasting narrative is elevated from one of mitigated failure to one of glorious redemption.

Yeah these are both very true posts

That's kinda where I'm at. I bought the card with the Witcher/Batman promo knowing I'd want both. Witcher is great, but Batman....
Like with GMG, you guys need to kick up dust to make sure they hear you.

And absolutely not, if refunds didn't exist Warner Bros would be laughing with your dollar bills as tissue.

IF this response is mostly the result caused by Steam Refunds and this actually challenges companies to not make such egregious ports...

There's nothing you can do, as those were free games. No compensation for free extras. Best you can do is hope existing owners get some bonuses and wait for fixes to turn up.

This is just incredible, isnt there some sort of regulating body for the VG industries? Like the FCC for cable companies? hasnt the VG industrie grown to such magnitude to warrant something of the sort? As it seems more an more games are released on this sort of state.

Does anyone think this happens without Steam refunds?

I would say not. We've never seen this from a publisher before, so I can only assume that there were a massive amount of refund requests submitted and someone at valve reached out to WB to get this worked out.

Everyone's talking about how steam refunds are great (and it's true- they,re the only reason WB is doing this)

I also see posts saying that '' maybe now other developers won,t release shitty PC ports''.

Couldn't they just not release their game on steam instead? No refunds problems in that case..

Does anyone think this happens without Steam refunds?

Nope.

Without Steam refunds, they basically have a captive audience.

Now, they need to win people back they've already lost.

They could, but Steam is a massive storefront so they'd be losing out on a significant chunk of the PC audience.

Secondly, by Steam having a refund procedure, it pressures other digital outlets into doing the same (GOG has had it for a while, Origin has for its EA games) like I suspect it did with GMG recently, who don't usually issue refunds but are doing so for AK.
