Bungie apologizes for Taken King controversy, CE items to be sold separate

That's a question each guardian will, again, have the option of answering as they choose come the 15th of September.
Are you PR? Or is this really how you discuss Destiny? And yeah just because it's an option doesn't make it better. I like Destiny. I don't like being hustled to play Destiny. It's quite simple. Sticking me in been a Rick a hard place and asking me to choose is whack. I don't want to not play but that the only logical option represented here.

So can you buy a used copy of the disc and just get the Taken King without the rest of the DLC? That's all I want to know.

The Dark Below = $20
House of Wolves = $20
A few shaders, emblem and class items = $20
I fail to see how cosmetic items value is worth $20 when the DLC packs are $20.

Seriously bungie how do you sleep at night you blood sucking bastards?

Like, I dont want to sound like Im defending the practice at all, because its madness, but there is no actual inherent value to digital content. Its priced according to any number of factors, chief of which its value relative to expectation. So if the collectors edition is twenty dollars extra, the value on the collectors edition goods are twenty dollars.

Hearthstone sells hero skins for ten dollars. Mass Effect 3 multiplayer dlc was free. There is no standard to hit, just what feels right and what feels wrong. The takeaway from 20 dllar emotes should definitely be not buying them.

MSRP on those things is 20 bucks? Jesus...

Its like everytime they try to fix something they find a way to make it worse. I seriously think they try to. This MUST be some kind of social experiment. Thats the only explanation.

The reason they are charging $20 is because they know there are many Destiny fans who will pay $20 for this. Plain and simple. Bungie is not sorry. Bungie sees this as another convenient and simple revenue stream.

They should have just put the shaders and emotes behind plastic Guardian figurines for $20 a pop.

$20 for a few emotes, shaders, and pieces of gear is bullshit, border. You know it is.

Obviously value is subjective. There are people (fucking idiots in my books, but people nonetheless) that spend thousands of dollars on mobile games to dress up their fucking sprite people so they'll build stuff faster or whatever the hell. But if they want to do that and have the money to, so be it.

I guess it always depends on where you are coming from. I've always seen "low margin prices on content, high margin prices on cosmetics/conveniences" as an acceptable business model that many games have already implemented pretty seamlessly, and without as much furor. I am more than happy to have a few collect-a-thon whales bankrolling new content. $20 for emotes and shaders is ridiculous, but ultimately preferable to higher baseline prices for everything or paid consumables or a Sparrow DLC store or whatever. Compared to the worst offenders, Destiny generally looks pretty good to me.

I suppose one thing that's bothersome is that people attach almost no value to the stuff they are getting for free as a Year One player.....but immense value to some bullshit items that nobody will care about a month after the expansion has launched. And how the line-of-logic has basically shifted from "I don't want to pay for things I already own" to "Actually I think I should be getting a discount on The Taken King and I think I should be able to buy these cosmetics for $5 instead of the original $20 value proposition." Bungie shifted the price and the goalpost almost instantly moved. Are you (the general you, not you specifically Mike_Works) that desperate for cheap shaders or something? If this junk is all mostly worthless, then why rage over a pricing difference? Just get over it and buy the cheaper expansion. You play the game, you know that this stuff is not going to be what separtes the men from the Gods. More often than not, wearing paid DLC just makes you look like a sucker more than a God.

It's better than before for sure. But since the people paying $40 for Taken King in standalone format had to have already spent a minimum of $95 on Destiny and its expansions, they should have just made the $40 edition itself the "Collector's Edition Upgrade" and rolled that new content in. They're already spending $135+ before this $20 upgrade, folding the upgrade in just seems fair. And they can keep the $20 upgrade for Legendary Edition buyers should they want to upgrade later.

Err bungie...the game has tonnes of potential and does a lot well but they really need to rethink their PR...How hard is it to throw players a bone once in awhile loke a free sparrow, Shader to the players who have been there day one? Seriously, it's not that hard.

The game they are releasing with destiny+HOW TDB+TTK should have been the game they released a year ago. That would have been enough content to last people a long ass time. Pretty much we were the damn beta group.

I wish I waited a year but there was no way I woulda saw this coming.

I feel the exact same way.

They should have just put the shaders and emotes behind plastic Guardian figurines for $20 a pop.

This would be the correct model for fans.

But then that eats into their profits, so...

I know its a different game but...

Remember when Borderlands 2 had DLC campaigns with whole new areas, storylines, and side quests for $10!

This is fucking insanity and I've already pre-purchased TKK on PSN (the 40$ upgrade as I own the game and all the expansions). This takes some might big fucking cojones on their part. Wow, we're gonna figure this out for you and then BAM fuck you pay us $20 for some bullshit shaders and emotes. GTFO with that bullshit Bungie. Man, have you people fallen mighty low.

I enjoy Destiny on the reg but fuck ya'll. This this last Destiny related purchase I make. This is just insulting. This is one of those worst weeks ever in PR over there.

Seriously, why can't there be a Taken King CE at a $20 discount due to the removal of the core game and the two previous DLCs for those who just want TTK? What is so goddamn hard about that?

this might be the migraine speaking

but

that is exactly what it is

You buy TTK for $40 and the extras for $20. That is $60

Or you buy the CE for $80.

$20 off of $80 is $60

Personally I think it should be a $5 or $10 DLC. Honestly, $10 is stretching it. Not like it comes with the OST.

They've done this exact thing, giving out free sparrows to people who bought the expansion pass before some date. I know this because I bought the pass afterwards and missed out.

This must be how Games Workshop figures out its prices.
Hah. I wouldn't be surprised.

*This is terrible*....*still buying it.*

Yeah, I can't figure out why companies still do this. What a mystery.

I don't get how Deej is lauded as a PR guru. His sincerity seems forced at best (read Ebay comment) and his weekly updates make me cringe they way they are overwritten.

Why can't we just get a plain-spoken humble PR dude who actually sounds like he's a consumer advocate rather than an excuse maker for marketing/design decisions that are received poorly.

yes, where is the OST? they never released the other tracks from the DLCs.

I can't believe someone thought it was a good idea to charge as much as an expansion pack for a few shaders, some class items, and a few emotes. Then to present that as a make good. Like...holy shit. I don't think I have the words.

At least the Year 1 stuff is cool looking :/

Yeah, I can't figure out why companies still do this. What a mystery.

I bought it BEFORE this shit was announced and before I knew anything about a CE or any of that. All I knew of was a package that came with all the expansions and a digital upgrade that's just the new TKK. So thanks for assuming.

He meant TTK expansion he already bought... he is surely not buying the $20 cosmetics.

The cowboys/outlaws of the industry narrative needs to stop. I agree with that.

I'd think $5 - $10 would be reasonable for 3 shaders, 3 emotes, and 3 class items. Assuming its actually 9 unique items.

But $20 is fucking insane.

It's not really bad PR. Stuff like DLC and paid content (particularly cosmetic stuff) has been accepted by most of the gaming community. It seems like the people really against it or fed up with it are just a very vocal minority in certain pockets of the internet. It's not as much that people are willing to pay for it, it's that the people that aren't willing to pay for it just don't care. It's not a big deal.

No, I'm certainly not Bungie or Activision PR. I am, however, hopelessly addicted to their game. More than a thousand hours in, I've come to terms with that.

I'm unclear on how you're being forced to choose not to play Destiny or TTK? Would not having those collector's items bother you so much that you'd quit? If so, perhaps the $20 is worth it? Or maybe just spring for $20 more and pick up the physical edition with the strange coin as well?

Not my call, but something to think about perhaps?

Let's not support Amibo style bullshit. I don't like this deal one bit, but that isn't better for the fans by a mile. Some fans? Sure.

Hah. I wouldn't be surprised.

Yeah but they need to be doing more of it. Every 3 months dedicated gamers get a shader or something.

I'm satisfied with this. The Taken King is $40. Period.

Ok, they want to have their "digital collector's edition" that's a $20 premium over the regular version of the expansion? That's fine. Clearly they want to place a premium value on these items and make the collector's edition "special". That's their prerogative.

I'd rather pay them $20 for the emotes than pay $40 for the emotes plus games I already have, but that's just me.

I meant for the physical CE which I thought, and probably failed, was clear. I'd probably go the $10 just being a fan of the game, but as you said that's a stretch without something like an OST to supplement it and put it closer to that CE level.

$20 for emotes and shaders, people. $20.

This is just the first year. We still have 9 more years of being shafted by the Bungie-Activision partnership. Remember that.

...$20

....for that....FOR THAT

PLLEAAAASE tell me I'm reading this wrong. Still catching up with the thread but seriously

...this, this isn't serious right?

RIGHT!?

Fair enough. But at least those fans who have no qualms paying for this, get at least a cool item to put above their Destiny playing space.

If no one buys it, it will drop in price no?

I have not seen too much DLC drop in price unless a game was phasing itself out. Some I have seen offered free when a new version in the series comes out (like ND did with Uncharted 2).

Oh, wow, that's quite the typo. I'm sure they meant to say those shaders and emotes were $2, not $20, right?
Right?!

Absolutely. And while you're remembering it, don't forget to get your pre-order in for the new Madden, and Call of Duty '16 as well.

$20 FUCKING DOLLARS FOR 3 EMOTES, SHADERS AND ITEMS?

That's the fucking price of a stand alone DLC!

God dammit, Bungie/Activision really are shitting at their customers.. Wow.

While it seems the internet has them back peddling, they seemed to have tripped in the process. $20 for 9 items? I was thinking more around $10, so a $49.99 price point for those who had all the content but wanted the TTK & CE digital goodies.

I'm a littles angry now about the situation but I'm still out. No clue how they could be this clueless. Seems the developers (Bungie) are so disconnected from what it really means to be a gaming consumer, because none of them should want this.

I do understand they need to make a profit and pay themselves, and I rightfully think they should be paid and paid well for success, but not like this. I would feel so dirty knowing the money in my check came from this.

Also... The karma of jumping ship from Microsoft for this... I bet that $60 Halo 3 ODST debacle looks like a gem compared to this.

I also was hoping the upgrade would be $10. That's about par for the course if you look at things like the Battlefront DE.

$20 is preposterous.

Ridiculous how tone deaf Bungie has been the past week

there are big differences in that comparison

1. Borderlands is an actual good game
2. Gearbox probably has a little bit of decency left in them
