Warner Brothers suspends [new] purchases for PC version of Batman Arkham Knight

I went ahead and got the PS4 version. I only paid $25 for the PC version and not only is this one currently superior by a wide mile, it comes with a ton of free DLC you'd normally only get through pre-order.

PC ports are going nowhere. Anyone saying this incredibly off base. PC games sell incredibly well over time and give devs / pubs a consistent stream of revenue for years and years. Much longer than consoles with their huge used / pre owned game market.

For example here the list of Steam games that are at least 1 full year old that sold over 200k units during JUST the 2 week Summer Sale

Witcher 2: 305,000 sales
Payday 2: 279,000 sales
Fallout New Vegas: 253,000 sales
Dishonored: 247,000 sales
Metro Last Light: 241,000 sales
Fallout 3: 228,000 sales
Terraria: 225,000 sales
Metro 2033: 221,000 sales
Borderlands 2: 218,000 sales
Age of Empires 2: 216,000 sales
Skyrim: 211,000 sales

And there are tons more over 100k sales. Tell me in NPD how often you see games selling this number of units this long after release? You don't. During the Steam Summer sale over 33 million games were sold for nearly 200 million dollars in revenue.

That's in 2 WEEKS!!! Insanity. PC games are going nowhere, in fact they are growing and growing and growing.

What this cluster fuck tell Devs and Pubs is the days of releasing shit ports and getting away from it are over. Make a solid port and you'll be rewarded. PC gamers will buy your games and support you for years to come. Screw us, and we will say screw you back.

This post really pumped me up.

Pretty cool of them, seems like they intend to fix it, but damn this should not have happened in the first place.

I highly doubt this happens if people weren't getting refunds left and right from Steam. Hopefully WB brings in a new port company and gets this fixed properly. I've enjoyed all three of the other Batman games on PC, hopefully they fix AK so I can play it there too.

they really do need to come out tomorrow with a better statement that gives some sort of time frame for what we're looking at

You are going to see more AAA games not release on PC now or just delay.

No way certain AAA games will stop releasing on PC. If anything this will make developers and publishers realise that they can't cut corners and release broken shit, and if they do there'll be consequences. If that means they have to delay PC versions to get them right so we have a better experience, I'm all for it.

Wow!

Just woke up to this. Was expecting a patch to fix some stuff, not this.
This is good. It means they are taking it seriously. The question is though, how long will this take? Weeks? Months?

Honestly could be months before its back. This thing blew up hugely in their face. You bet when they bring this back it will have all the graphics features as console and run waaaay better than what was released. WB cant afford for this port not to launch fantastic next time so I expect they will take their time with it

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Rocksteady fix the port now they are done with the console version.

Great post.

Best news I could wake up to, shows that WB takes this seriously. Let's hope they get this up and running in a satisfying way swiftly now, but I'm guessing it's at least a week away.

And who knows, maybe there's some sort of compensation (free season pass?) for those of us who have had that unoptimized and disappointing game in our library through all of this. :P

I was planning on saving this game until after I finish witcher 3, Dark souls 1 and Sleeping Dogs so I can wait. Such a shock that they let the PC port suck ass like that, hope everything gets fixed and ironed out, I dont want anything compromising my experience with this game.

That's what I suspect too. They want to make sure it's a much better in the re-release and that could take months, I am guessing?

I just might play the game as it is, since my experience a couple of hours in, is smooth 30fps so far, no dips yet. Just missing stuff like AO.

I don't mind waiting as long as the final product is good. Maybe they'll give us early purchases the season pass for free? That'd be nice.

Top tier post.

The reality is you may get some fixes in the short term, but this may turn out to be months of work.

Winter sale it is then.

Mortal Kombat still isn't fixed. And that's been months after they fired High Voltage and put a new port developer on it.

Wow. I mean, shitty of them to fuck it up so bad in the first place, but good on them to take some drastic measures to get this shit resolved.

Damn cool of WB To take notice... But damn! To stop selling it entirely and make a statement is pretty insane, a cloud that will carry over even when it is re released.

Wow, is it really that bad?
How the hell does something get released so broken? At least they're doing something about it now, but fixing theses issues should have been done BEFORE release.

Iron Galaxy put out that terrible vita port of borderlands 2 as well as those terrible HD teamsters for current gen. They are getting spread way too fucking thin.

As someone who's been keeping up with Dave Lang and Co, mainly thanks to Giant Bomb, I feel bad that this thing is going to slap 'em real hard and I don't know what the conditions they were working with were.....

...but I'm glad WB decided to respond the way they did. It shows that this matters to them. Whether it be this bleeding into all current Arkham Knight discussion on social media, or Steam's Refund policy, they've seen reason to step in and say "hold up hold up hold up, we will fix this, like ACTUALLY fix this". I really hope they take this as a learning experience.

I always wonder how much profit is being made when the game is sold for $10 or so during a sale.

It's honestly pretty good. Selling on Steam cuts out manufacturing, retailers, and sometimes the publisher, plus the added visibility that comes from a sale can even make up for the discount.

I wonder where this leaves Green Man Gamings refund policy, if we were waiting for a patch,to me it sounds like this patch ain't coming soon, so wonder if they wil refund.

Probably not that much (after everyone gets their cut), but I imagine it probably has a ripple effect where once sales are done, people who bought it tell people they know and that has the possibility of getting them to keep the game fresh in everyone's mind or inspire new purchases.

Because in the PC landscape until about a month ago if a broken port was released in general nothing could be done about it. Now people are getting refunds en mass.

Well you can work it out yourself on a basic level.

100,000 copies @ 10 dollars - 30% cut = 700,000 to whomever the cheques are being sent.

If there's a developer/publisher split then it's more complicated. But this sort of deep discounting on the PC provides a long tail of modest sales as a bunch of people who may not have wanted the game decide that at 75% off, maybe they will buy it after all.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Rocksteady choosing to work on DLC again instead of fixing the PC version.

Are you confusing Rocksteady with WB Montreal?

Good on them, fix it up and give it the attention it deserves and I'll buy it.

Maybe this.

Getting my gpu in 3 weeks. We'll see if I get a well running Batman, or if I pick up Witcher 3.

Mmmmm....sex > poor PC version

Edit: Hey, can someone step on the backs of Visual Concepts. They tend to try and pull the same shit with the NBA 2k series on PC. If a developer is going to take the time to put out a PC product it should at the very least, on comparable hardware, be indistinguishable from the PS4/XOne version. EVERY TIME!

I always wonder how much profit is being made when the game is sold for $10 or so during a sale.

More than what they would get for a used game being sold. But to really answer your question, they are making 70% profit so $7 out of $10.

Sounds good to me. I'd rather have a constant stream of cash than a big pay day at the start and much much less a year later.

Especially when you continually sell hundreds of thousands to millions of copies every year. Nice to have that annuity to fall back on.

Wow. I didn't think they do this. This sounds promising they'll really fix it (and hopefully add the missing features from the PS4 version).

Namco Bandai still haven't took down DS1 for sale, and that's one of the worst, if not the worst, port I've seen for PC, and still selling for £20 too last time I checked.

Hopefully they can fix it pretty soon...
