Bungie apologizes for Taken King controversy, CE items to be sold separate

here is a visual representation of that apology

It never fails to amaze me how much of a rort every aspect of this game has been. And now we have $40 for The Taken King and $20 for 3 shaders and emotes if you have been a loyal fan and already have all the other content? Geezuz, this is a huge slap in the face for the loyalists! So glad I sold my copy of this game a few weeks after the full game came out, it seems like i've literally dodged a bullet here.

Twenty fucking dollars for shaders and emblems. Costs just as much as their so called ''expansions''.

I love Destiny, but man Bungie have been slipping and are slowly losing me as a dedicated destiny player.

"I am Luke Smith, Creative Director on Destiny: The Taken King. Most of you don't know that Asshat was me. Bungie doesn't care about their most loyal fans."

Fixed that for you.

For the record before more posts about "but Destiny is fun"... the science and articles we are posting are proving it is fun, that is not what we are disputing here. We are disputing as to why some feel the need to buy overpriced shit cause we think it is needed to be a part of the fun. I just, I just can't miss out on that. I have been guilty of it in the past.

Basically if Activision wins, we are going to get less content for more, and this Destiny experiment is proving such.

Majority of us consumers speaking out have already said if the price was more reasonable, we would not be voicing displeasure.
I don't believe you for a second, I think you would be in here complaining about Destiny even if the dlc was half the price they announced. It seems like you just want to pretend to act "superior" by saying anyone buying this has no free will and is forcing themselves because Activision said so.

I am fully aware that all game publishers do market research and what they can do to sell more units, pretty much every business on earth does this.

It's always going to come down to what the majority finds reasonable and if they don't think it's worth 40 than it's not going to sell.

So all I own is Destiny (digitally, not that that should make much of a difference) with no DLC. What would be the cheapest way to get all the new DLC? Would I have to do the Legendary edition and basically re-buy the game?

Yup that's what it looks like at least according to the 40 dollar edition.

This is kind of what I expected when the first weekly update came out as part 1/2. Part 1 dedicated to the community uproar, part 2, business mostly as usual.

Prove that this can't be applied to anything

It is human psychology, so it can be applied to everything with the human mind involved. Whether these concepts apply to more than Destiny isn't the point. Destiny exploits these concepts like any mmo or other progression based game, though all games use it to a degree.

If TTK was £20/30 and the 'upgrade' was £10 for a total of £30/40 i wouldn't have even complained.

I'd have ate that shit up and asked for more.

It is possible to enjoy Destiny but call out Bungie for their shitty choices.

Yes.

$60 Legendary edition.

He has reasoned very fairly, and he's not being superior at all. He's detailed the tactics developers use, the tricks they pull to hook the players, and he's admitted it works on him.

He didn't say we have no free will, that's an oversimplification.

I just spent a few minutes reading over some of the mind-numbingly moronic, pathetically contrived arguments being made by armchair psychoanalysts. I could feel my fucking eyes rolling into the top of my sockets as I scrolled through the posts, as if my brain was pleading ignorance for the sake of my GAF account.

I won't quote anything or call any names out or even bother to say what's so hilarious about all of it, but I guess I'm still at least partially hooked on the Destiny drug as everyone else seems to allegedly be-- I stopped playing after level ~20 yet I still can't help but check in these threads every now and again for the engaging conversations.

Activision poisoned my brain and all I got was a lousy $100 "Truly Limited™ Edition" copy of the game that sits untouched and incomplete despite obviously lacking in content. I am just as sick as, if not worse, than everyone else.

For everyone planning on buying the expansion no matter what:

Please hold of until the last possible minute. By not giving in early, you're helping to make them sweat a little bit.

I'll wait until a sale (so, probably never). I have no desire to get this at a time when so many great games are coming out.

Did you read the article?

This is what they've done here, the game has a very clear compulsion loop in place. The entire thing is built around chasing loot.

This isn't some conspiracy theory or overblown idea to give people an opportunity to look down on the players who enjoy Destiny, this is how games are designed to hook players.

No one is calling anyone sick, no one is saying you don't have free will.

Read the article, it's interesting.

Gonna have to bow out now I just can't make sense of a value proposition for me to drop £40 quid on this and im not addicted like other hardcore destiny players its a slippery slope £40 for the add on £20 for cosmetics I brought the witcher a couple weeks back for £49 same for bloodborne and the last two dlcs content wise are pretty thin. I just don't have enough faith in bungie to deliver....sigh I do want that stormbringer class tho :(

We talking about skinner boxes now?

I wish the discussion could be distilled into the Taken King being overpriced, since all of these side complaints only muddy the water.

If you like Destiny and play it a lot then it's not overpriced. If you do not and don't see the value in what is offered then it isn't.

I fucking solved it!

The skinnerbox discussion is interesting...

Imagine this. You're in a situation with a group of people that need to reach a destination, and your group has to decide whether to travel through the valley, or find a way across the lake.

Then Fred interjects about the philosophical importance of choice in human development.

Yeah, it's relevant. To any time you have to make a meaningful choice.

And it adds nothing of real value to the decision-making process at hand.

Edit: after reading the weekly update again, looks like Deej's 'and more' will be touched upon... Later than this weeks update. Eh, dripfeeds...

This thread has been floating all day and sometimes when i skim the front page i see

'Thread: Bungie capitalizes on Taken King controversy'

Bungie should learn from CDPR.

Small superficial DLC should be free! Stop being greedy assholes Bungie.

20$: The Taken king DLC. If you own the previous DLC you get the CE class items delivered to your Postmaster.

40$: TDB+ToW+ The taken king. NO CE stuff included.

19 days played as my titan
20 days as my hunter
35 days as my warlock.

Love the game, dont mind the grind, spend hours just floating around the planets doing patrols and shizzle.

BUT i stopped playing the minute they announced the deal with TTK.

No fucking way in hell am I being fleeced for £40 instead of the £25-28 that it should be, and even that is over priced.

At that moment the love died, playing the witcher3 now which I have had from launch, but didnt really start.

My first and probs my last Bungie game, left a very bitter taste.

If these are the kinds of comments and attitude that Bungie think they can get away with, I want no part of their future.

74 days? The fuck?

Based on your record I think you'd get your money worth paying 40 pounds.

You don't even know what's in ttk.

Going by previous expansions I think we can take a fair guess.

Or we could say that at £40 it costs the same as vanilla Destiny?

So I should be getting in TTK:

- 4 planets
- 3 new guardians
- 6 new subclasses (2 per guardian)
- 1 new raid
- 6 strikes
- 6 PvP maps
- 20 new levels
- Whole new story
- etc

Yeah let's uhhhhh wait and see.

I don't get how people can just ignore the psychological evidence about Destiny. Yes, it preys on human compulsion. It's not the first game to do so by any means. Id wager most games have ideas like that in mind. Lord knows the arcade industry loved using those tactics. I think what bothers people about it in Destiny is how apparent it is. It feels like they didn't even bother to put any sort of dressing to hide it around these aspects of the game. The primary thing about it that is annoying is how there is a lock on progression. You're forced to progress at a slow speed. They've sped it up a lot, but those weekly resets are painful.

You don't even know what's in ttk.

it doesn't matter as the contents to me aren't worth £40 when the US get it for $40. if they lowered the price to what the conversion rate is then I would look again. Hence the fleeced part of the original comment.

You've averaged over 6 hours a day since release.

How were you OK with everything until now?

Edit: Ah I guess you're talking about the conversion rate.

Wasn't the base game £40 at launch? is TTK the same price as the base game in the UK?

It's about double the size of the other expansions with the new classes, missions, strikes, crucible content and raid

My expectation considering previous expansions and higher price point.

-0 new planets/1 new area (Hive Ship)/1 new social space
-0 new Guardians
-3 new subclasses
-1 new raid
-5 Strikes (1 exclusive to PS)
-4 PVP Maps (1 exclusive to PS)
-2 new PVP game modes
-8 new story missions
-No new "whole" story. Hunt down Oryx and kill him will be basic premise.

All this for £40 aka $63.

Being bigger than the previous expansions isn't really a great feat of achievement is it?

Is it the same size as the Vanilla game? Will I receive the things I listed?

I payed £40 for those things. If Bungie want another £40 then it should be equal to that at a minimum.

Or

If they actually fixed their conversion rates instead of this 1:1 bullshit we wouldn't even need to have this discussion.
