SCOTUS strikes down gay marriage bans, legalizing marriage equality nationwide

I think a fairly rational reason, and certainly what forms the core of the belief in traditional marriage from most people I know who hold to it, is that men and women have been designed to be complimentary to each other, biologically, emotionally, sexually, in a way that people of the same gender are not. (Consider sexual organs, for instance.) That hence there is an inherent difference between same-sex relationships and different-sex relationships - that the genders aren't interchangable.

This is the wrongest thing about this post. All women feel a certain way and all men feel another ? We're not all just persons with our own emotions ?

This is sexist both ways.

I'm going to show this to everyone I can.

Congratulations to United States indeed.

At least so far haven't seen any shit about it on my facebook feed, but through other channels seen plenty from Finnish people. So many people here seem to have no clue about the Supreme Court and its position.

Thanks for this. My sister posted about a rainbow nearby her with a caption about it being a sign of God's covenant with people and I wondered if she just made it up or if it's actually in the Bible (I've read the book, but didn't remember that).

I wonder if she's going to post about the rainbow on top of the White House. Well, I don't really, because she's a hardcore believer (used to be very liberal before she started believing) and is against gay marriage so yeah.. of course she chooses when it's a sign of God's covenant and when not.
It's in the Old Testament after the flood. God tells Noah He will not flood the world next time. The rainbow is supposed to remind us of God's promise.

Holy shit, wait, 626 is the day of same-sex marriage legalization?!

Please explain how this rule of yours applies to sterile men and women, intergender persons, and AIS women.

Like I said earlier, this is larger than just procreation. The latter two categories are marginal cases that would have to be examined on an individual level.

Have you had anal sex with another man? If not how can you say anything about the level of physical and emotional intimacy they can obtain?

Well, I can't make any statements about this kind of physical or emotional intimacy from experience, and I'm certainly not trying to. This is all an issue I'm commenting on from the outside, so to speak.

If you could point to something evident and say "there it is, the innate specialness happening", then that argument might be worth something.

I think the argument would point mostly towards the quantifiable differences between men and women and saying that is in those differences that the special nature of their relationship is founded.

Because some women are stronger physically and emotionally than men? Not all men and women fit the stereotypes you have brought forth. I've been lurking this entire time, but this is getting ridiculous. I do not fit the stereotype of men you have brought forth and I have traits in both and none. Marriage existed before religion and its definition has changed as a result of definitions changing over time for everything. You say who should define marriage? Easy, same sex marriage is now accepted by the majority of the USA, that is who should define marriage. Legal marriage is a right that every person should be offered to every person who wants those rights. Equality cannot be denied to anyone.

I said that men and women are different, not specifically how they are different or how those differences apply to everyone on an individual level. You're reading stereotypes into my posts that aren't there.

I'm pointing out that the differences between the two sides of the same-sex marriage issue does pretty much boil down to who defines marriage and how it is thus defined. Your position is one that follows logically from the belief that marriage is a social contract defined by the government with certain legal and financial benefits conferred on the participants.

I recognize a Demetri Martin quote when I see one

Since Ron Paul, the flag-bearer of all modern Libertarianism in American politics, was unequivocal in his support of state law over federal law? Specifically even citing states rights over civil rights.
The Paul's consider themselves Constitutionalists first, semi-libertarian second or third or fourth. Both oppose the party platform on socially conservative grounds and the NAP in general when it runs afoul of their Constitutional view. Rand calls himself a "constitutional conservative" and will only admit to having certain libertarian ideas.

Gary Johnson, the most popular Libertarian candidate in American history according to the popular vote, has called for a Constitutional Amendment to enshrine same-sex equality. Not very states rights.

In any case, Thomas is the most libertarian justice probably and he'd score about a 35%. Scalia and his new professionalism are way off the reservation.

Better question is what serious libertarian figure in the United States ISN'T in favor of states rights? They're all Randian twits.
This literally makes no sense. If they were all objectivists why would they support the states rights doctrine? No lower levels of government would be allowed to oppose the Objectivist Totalitarian State.

I have no clue what you consider a "serious libertarian figure" and I assume they wouldn't be the same people I would so I can't answer this specifically. As a regular peddler of the sewer of libertarianism I'd say 90+% would come down on liberty trumping any state powers (rejecting the idea that states have rights) ever, 5% of any subgroup are weirdos, and the other 5% are Lew Rockwell and friends. (Although from the blog they all seem to support the separation of marriage and state completely, the standard libertarian view. Even if the Supreme Court are "Satan's citadel" as this Becky person notes.)

WASHINGTON (2012)

Thank you for all these amazing pictures. I especially love this one.

When people say "The South" or "Redneck" or "Conservative Men" or somesuch, I feel like this is the image stereotype that will pop into a lot of heads. There is something about these two older, bearded gentlemen finally able to openly profess their love that just kills (in a good way). ;_;

I'm exhilarated and entertained by the bigots mad that they had to share their rights, more than I am with the ruling itself. Lol
Particular Facebook groups like Fox News and the like are so salty, and it's delicious.

The news somehow penetrated into my work time-bubble and we were squealing all day. Hooray!!!

suspicious-fry.jpg

and on topic, awesome! Those pictures of folks getting married are heartwarming to say the least. Great to finally see this step taken and hopefully we can move on to bigger and better things. Conservative radio must be going nuts right now and Joe Rogan sums it up best for me
