It took me a 2 week ban from NeoGAF to go from accepting but homophobic, to not.

All they need is to think about it without similarly bigoted peers.

When you are sheltered your whole life or taught there are significant religious reason to hate that life, it's very hard to break the cycle. It's akin to indoctrination, brain washing. And it takes a very very big event usually to get someone to be introspective enough to change their views.

I had to change a lot over my 20s, and it was hard. I hurt a lot of people due to my stupidity. Not about LGBT rights - was always pro gay marriage - but just in general. Now I am 30 and view the world completely differently, but it took time.

All the rainbow landmarks really made me feel a lot of pride yesterday, and all of the rainbow avatars here as well. Great month this has been!

If anyone can make a rainbow flag version of my Captain Cold avatar, that'd be amazing; He may be an evil supervillain, but he hates everyone equally.

Yeah because homosexuality spreads AIDS and not the unprotected sex that takes place in the poorer parts of the worlds. Which somehow is something certain religious groups are also against.

Just realize that for every piece of shit like this guy, there's at least 10 of us that embrace equality and want to see everyone be able to love who they want freely with the same benefits as heterosexual relationships. What an epic win for the US as a whole.

Because O-T is so overwhelmingly welcoming and liberal, it's easy to forget what sorts of miserable, backasswards creatures exist primarily over on the gaming side.

This drt character being a prime example.

Serious question, was there ever a time of NeoGAF where you say something like "You homophobic people are disgusting and horrible bigots." and get banned for it?

Or has NeoGAF always been like this?

I mean even now if you just post nothing but insults, even at a homophobic individual, a mod might ban you. But they've always been very progressive. It's just become a more visible element of NeoGAF as it became clear this industry needs a place of inclusiveness to fight back against the archaic decisions and opinions that still prevail in the videogame world.
 
People reacting so dramatically to what another person is sexually attracted to is really so stupid. The other day, the writer of the Team Fortress 2 comic came out and said a character is lesbian on social media and I read reactions like 'wow that's just looking for attention' and 'it was never part of the plot, why bring it up?' and people upset he said she was lesbian. Like.. It doesn't change a thing about her character's decisions and even if her sexuality doesn't come up in the plot, it's not attention seeking to share this fact about the character.

Anyway, the writer ended up saying he wasn't being serious or something but still. People and their obsession with sexuality and what others are attracted to is just silly. And people still look at homosexuality with being 'straight' as being the norm and being gay as being 'different from the norm' and generalize so much. It annoys me sometimes.

This is not very relevant to the salt about gay marriage approval in the states, but still it's something I think about.

Because people feel good about themselves when they are "better" than others. That's why hate speech is demeaning. Told homosexuality is bad? Laugh and call homosexuals disgusting. That makes them the good ones.

This is how it has been for the past generation.
