Political grandstanding. I'm not an expert in these matters, but I read that technically the losing side of the case has a few weeks to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider their ruling. There is absolutely no chance that they will reconsider and the people who are holding up gay marriages know this. They're just doing this so that they can claim to their political base "ah stood up to the tyranny of the librul courts" or some such bullshit.

You're misreading his opinion. The primary point he makes in that part is that "the Constitution contains no 'dignity' Clause." Thus, the effect of a law on "dignity" is not a basis on which the law may be struck down. His secondary point is that, even if dignity were a proper subject for judicial review, dignity--like liberty, in his view--is something to be protected from government, not something that is bestowed by government. Thomas views this as significant because the plaintiffs in this case are seeking to access government recognition of their relationships and the benefits that flow from such recognition--i.e., they are seeking something that is bestowed by government. To seek a grant of dignity from the government, he writes, "inverts the relationship between the individual and the state[.]"

It should go without saying that when Thomas says "dignity," he isn't talking about "equality," as your paraphrase suggests. His dissent doesn't discuss the Equal Protection Clause, nor did it need to, since he joined Roberts' discussion of the same.

Just came in to say how damn happy I am about this. If I ever decide to have kids I can look them in the eyes with pride now. Congratulations to all Gay couples across the country. You deserve to be just as miserable as anyone else damn it! :D

These are overwhelming with feels. In another post, someone mentioned that there are elderly same sex couples who have been together for decades and this is their moment. This moment should have happened a long time ago.
 
I'm so happy. My best friend once again shows me how mature, compassionate, and brave he is. His open support of gay marriage is much appreciated by me, someone who's not even brave enough to come out. I once told him that he's like a younger brother I always want and I wasn't wrong.

Due to English quirks, you use "tolerant" to mean "accepting of minorities" when referring to societies. It doesn't necessarily have the same connotation as when the word is applied to people.

I'm never letting go of the fact that Michigan straight up banned same sex marriage and was one of the last few states that never legalized it...

This state really confounds me with it's identity issue. Like it wants to be a southern state, but not really, but kinda... but not really though. I hate living here.

Yeah, I personally can't wait until Texas is forced to comply with this ruling. Currently, many counties (I actually can't name one that isn't doing the following) are still not issuing same sex marriage licenses because they "need new forms" and/or "are waiting for official word from the state government".
 
Everyone is giving Justice Kennedy props which he deserves; his opinion is no doubt going to be remembered fondly, even decades from now. Certainly, without his vote this ruling would not be possible.

That said, President Obama deserves an equal amount of praise here, as do Justices Sotomayor and Kagan. For example -- had McCain won in 2008, it's likely that now retired Justices Souter and Stevens would have still stepped down at some point in his first term. McCain would have then nominated two people who are just as conservative as Roberts and Alito. Yesterday's ruling would have most likely been a decisive conservative 6-3 vote against same-sex marriage (with Kennedy, Ginsburg and Breyer dissenting).

You can also thank the Republican party's eternal Lord and Savior -- "The Gipper" -- Ronald Reagan, for nominating Kennedy.

So yeah, THANKS OBAMA... and Reagan. :o

Also, let this decision be a lesson to anyone who states that a Presidential candidate and his/her potential Supreme Court nominees are "not that important" -- this is just fundamentally WRONG. It can be the difference between millions of people keeping or losing their health insurance, and landmark decisions that finally settle the score on whether the country as a whole should embrace or reject same-sex marriage. There are not many things a President can do *cough*short of enacting health care reform*cough* that would leave such a lasting effect long after he or she leaves office.

Bunches of counties were handing out licenses. Tarrant, Travis, Dallas, Harris, and Bexar -- most of the biggest counties -- were handing them out. It's mostly rural counties that have been "waiting for new forms" like Denton, Johnson, Parker, and Wise. Not that surprising given their rural centers and bad direction from the AG's office. The majority of those will start issuing on Monday.
 
I'd ask for a rainbow avatar, but something tells me Jimmy wouldn't have been too keen on it. He was a man's man of an era where this kind of shit wasn't tolerated.

I'm kidding - he was heavily rumored to be gay, despite being a "ladies man". Studios supposedly forced him to go to brothels to prevent his lack of interest in women from becoming headlines. He was also openly gay with friends apparently.

The GAF logo made me shed a tear. I went out last night to celebrate and had an incredible time. Yesterday was an unbelievable day.

I got a call from my mom when the ruling hit. She was in tears because she was so happy for me. Even though I'm no where near the point of marriage, but just knowing I can made her so happy. Was surreal for me.

Anyway, glad to witness, and be a part of, such a huge moment in history.
