2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

And everyone is doing that floating pad with no real left/right clicks. :P

I refuse to buy anything with a clickpad. I HATE those things, they all suck.

Dedicated buttons or gtho.

This. You'll need an 840M, even for light gaming.

It isn't recognizing the dedicated GPU? That's not good.

Try running GPU-Z to see if it can read the Nvidia card.

Have you used Nvidia's clean install option? If not, try that too.

Yeah the -S bundles a lot of nice additions at a discount. I just link the vanilla SKU for simplicity.

I tried the clean install. No luck :( Sometimes the GPU will show-up on HWMonitor, only to dissapear from it again. Any other ideas on what could be done? Thank you for all the help so far btw. :)

Country: United Kindgdom
Budget: £800 - £900
Max Size: 15” – 17”
Planned usage:
I want to be able to game on it (fairly intensive) and some video editing ability. As well as doing standard work using standard programs e.g. Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Hey guys,
I am soon to be moving to Japan to work as an ALT for two years, I am selling my PC (i7, GTX 770) to be able to afford a pretty decent gaming laptop to use whilst I am out there. I looking for something fairly decent, I would love to be able to play games on medium to high is possible. Really loving the Witcher 3 at the moment, if I could maybe play that on medium I would be happy. Any chance anyone can give me some suggestions?

Also could anyone give some advice on any potential issues on voltage conversion between the UK and having a pretty powerful laptop in Japan?

I was looking at this:
http://www.ebuyer.com/675959-msi-gs60-2pc-ghost-gaming-laptop-9s7-16h212-485

But not sure if this is my best option, some websites available to me here in the UK are:

www.overclockers.co.uk

Reinstall the OS. If that doesn't fix things, you may have had your GPU go bad.

I am looking for help finding an laptop for my friends son.

You could build one of these, upgrade to GTX 970M, 8GB RAM, and 120GB mSATA SSD, for £907 inc VAT.

970M is 2x the 860M.

Hi,

I posted back in January about buying a new laptop, but I couldn't find any that fit all my requirements until now. My current laptop is on its last legs so I need to buy one right away. However, I saved up some money so I can buy a more expensive one if it will be worth it.

Details
Country: Canada
Maximum Budget: $2000
Max Size: I need 15.6" for the full keyboard but I would like to get a laptop under 5 pounds.
Planned usage: Programming, internet, email, relatively good speakers for listening to music. For gaming I want something that will play Dreamfall Chapters on high settings and hopefully No Man's Sky on decent settings. I'm hoping for this laptop to last at least 3 years, and preferably up to 5 like my current one has.

The one I was looking at was the MSI GS60 Ghost-607. I like it because it looks very light but I couldn't find any reviews of it since it just came out. Do you recommend it?

I would try to go $100 over your budget for the 970M SKU. The stronger GPU matters way more than the latest CPU, and will have a much longer lasting impact on the machine's longevity as a gaming laptop.

Alright, I went for the 970M one. I really hope this one lasts me for awhile. Thanks for your advice.

I seem to remember asking some while ago, but don't remember receiving an answer: what would be better for a laptop with a CPU having a single-channel memory controller, adding a second memory stick or swapping the existing one for a larger size?

Answer with a question: Do you actually do things, where single/dual channel actually matters?

Seriously dude, thank you so much.

No prob man. Let us know what you think of the laptop once you receive it.

Country - USA
Maximum budget - AT MOST around $600, ideally a bit lower though.
Max size - Nothing too small but I'm probably gonna be plugging it into my TV so it doesn't have to be big.
Planned usage - I do plan on gaming with it, I'd like it to play modern games but it doesn't have to play em on max settings or anything. As long as they look like 360/PS3 games I'm fine tbh. Probably gonna be watching lots of movies and stuff too in HD.

Hehe... what I'm asking for is probably a longshot - haha, figured it can't hurt to ask though. Computer stuff confuses me... *scratches head*

Thanks in advance!

Answer with a question: Do you actually do things, where single/dual channel actually matters?
I may have been unclear in my previous message.

My laptop CPU has a single-channel memory controller (it's a Beema). I want to increase the amount of RAM the system has from 4 to 8 GB. My question was, given the single-channel controller, what would be better: adding a second 4 GB DIMM (even though the system won't be able to go dual) or swapping the original one for a single 8 GB one? Would the system run better with a single 8 GB DIMM as opposed to 2x4 ones, again, given the lack of dual-channel controller?

So laptop GAF I'm looking for a new Laptop while my old one is getting a new home. I want to be able to work with Photoshop and play some more demanding games like Starcraft 2, Mafia 2 and so on. I think a GTX 850/860/950/960m would be sufficient for the task.

But how about CPU? Does it matter if I go with a slower i7 quad core or a faster i5 Dual Core? I mean would it be better with a 2.4Ghz quad core vs a 2.8Ghz dual core? My budget is roughly 8000-9000 Sek

I can find nothing cheaper than this.

For your situation, go with whatever route is the cheapest.

Always go with the i7 quad.

Thanks K.Jack, I appreciate it! Not a bad price. I'm gonna add that to my cart and see if I can somehow find something better.

Might as well ask but how much would I have to pay for a Desktop to get about the same thing?

I suck at this kinda stuff. Haha.

For $650 I'm sure the desktop thread could build you something 4x as powerful.

So yeah, don't mess with unofficial laptop BIOSs. It's nasty stuff.

Got my Y50 today.
My main concern right now is that my Y50 clearly has a TN screen, even though Lenovo's site advertised that this particular model (59425944) came with an IPS. It also included Superfish, which should've been ditched months ago.
I think I got a pre-refresh model. Wondering if I should get it replaced...

Edit: Called, they'll replace it. I get to keep the current laptop in the meantime, which is quite nice.

Sorry guys, I'm a total computer noob and my old laptop just broke. I figured I'd defer to you experts for advice. Please help me out if possible. And sorry if my price range is unrealistic for what I'm asking. I need to get educated on this.

Country where it will be purchased:
-USA

Maximum budget:
-I'm flexible but I think $1,300 for now unless I am really missing out by not going a few hundred higher.

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight):
-I'd prefer under 5 lbs if possible but it's certainly not mandatory.

Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all). Ideally you'll point out what resolution and settings are your standard, based off of what I've laid out in the OP:
-1080p would be fine. High to ultra settings unless theyre way out of my price league. (I fear they may be). If so... How much should I be looking to spend to get to high or ultra? I also am hoping to check out Dolphin emulation, but only as a passing curiosity.

Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc.:

- I want the screen to have a fast refresh rate. 60hz is fine - I just don't want to see smearing/bleeding for scenes in motion due to a cheap display.

So... Is it possible to get this?

Edit: Nevermind. Decided to go in a different route than a gaming laptop.

I've read through a bunch of this thread. I'm pretty sure the Y50 is the one for me. My question is which model? Is there a minimum spec I should be looking for in terms of GPU/RAM? Or is it simply "buy the most expensive one you're comfortable with"?

Hey everyone. I'm way out of the loop when it comes to laptops so any help is rad.

East Coast USA
$500 or less but as cheap as possible while meeting as many of my needs as I can.

Light/medium gaming. No AAA games.
Productivity stuff, internet etc.

But mostly this is going to be a work computer for 3D printing and design. I'm going to be running more basic 3D design software (123d design, meshmixer etc.) Along with Illustrator and some other stuff.

So I kind of just need the most powerful thing I can get for the least money I guess? I'm assuming my priorities in order would be processor, ram then gpu and that my only options are refurb laptops. I know I'm asking for a bit much but I have a tight budget :/

Hey people!

3 months ago I got the MSI GE60 2PC Apache
(GE60 Apache -033;9S7-16GF11-033)

(Copy pasted from Amazon)

Code:
Intel Core i7-4700HQ 3.2 GHz
8 GB DDR3L SDRAM
1024 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive
15.6-Inch Screen, NVIDIA Geforce GTX850M with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM
Windows 8.1

When I'm watching streams on "high" quality on Twitch my laptop heats up anywhere from the mid to high 70's even with a "Cooler Master NotePal X2 Laptop Cooling Pad with 140mm Blue LED Fan (R9-NBC-4WAK-GP)".

I should I consider changing the stock thermal compound that came with my laptop? If so, should I also swap out the heatsink (if it's even possible) to maximize the cooling?

I'm new to this kind of stuff so I'd appreciate some advice. Thanks!

Go with this one. The GTX 970M is a pretty strong card for 1080p gaming.

I'd just buy the basic $849 model from Lenovo's site.

Being in the 70s means nothing to a laptop. I'd ignore anything that's below 90 degrees.

Will finally buy a new laptop next week. These 2 models looks similar to me, but could someone still take a look for me :)

Much appreciated!

Same exact laptop in both links.

Is there a difference in one stating Cache SSD in addition to HDD and the other one stating just 256gb solid state drive?

Wow, I missed that, which is a huge difference. So the one on bol has a 256GB SSD, versus the 500GB hybrid drive of the other one.

I'd pretty much always go with the SSD, but 256GB may be too small, depending on your needs and wants.

My old laptop finally kicked the bucket. Any recommendations for a new gaming laptop that could handle upcoming games at least around high

Don't worry about budget though below $1500 would be ideal.

Country: USA
Maximum budget: $850
Max size: not over 14" screen size
Planned usage: Gaming, obviously; I'd like it to at least run these games:
Dark Souls
Skyrim
Bioshock games

At decent settings/framerate (30fps). My current resolution is 1280x800, so anything higher than that would be good.

Additional usage:

  • I need to be able to run Office/Adobe products with optimal performance
Specifically, I need to be able to run Excel/Access at decent speeds even with large databases. I'm talking 300,000 lines with reasonable performance at the very least.

  • I'd like to be able to watch streaming services with little to no chugging (Netflix, Youtube, etc.). I'm not talking about buffering, but rather FPS. My current laptop has a huge problem with this. For example, an HD Youtube vid that's supposedly supposed to run at 60fps would run at maybe 2fps on my computer (not exaggerating).

  • I'd like for it to be able to run multiple medium-intensive programs at once. eg. Have Youtube paused in the background while I play Skyrim. Stuff like that.

Additional info:

  • 5 hours battery minimum, if possible

  • This specification might be hard to nail down, but I'd like a keyboard that "feels good". My current laptop's keyboard is utter trash, in the sense I can't "feel" the keys I'm pressing, and I find myself pressing keys multiple times just to get it to register - it's not a defect, it's just the way the keyboard is physically designed. I want a keyboard where I can type "normally"... if that makes sense.

  • Runs Windows 7

  • At least 5 USB ports

  • Able to access virtual machines through VPN at reasonable performance

Also: the OP specified it would make most financial sense to buy/insert my own SSD and Memory (I assume he's talking about RAM?). If it's not too much trouble I'd like some recommendations on the best SSD's and memory sticks I could buy.

A little bit on my background. I have owned 2 laptops for the past 15 years, throughout high school and college, and both have been significantly below industry standard tech-wise. Both laptops were hand-me-downs, so this is the first time I've ever looked for a laptop. Now I'm actually working a "big person job" and have money to buy a decent laptop, so I've been meaning to take it on myself to do so.

The problem is I am completely, utterly ignorant when it comes to hardware tech, so I apologize if my specifications above don't seem clear enough. I hate to say it but even reading the OP there are quite a few things I don't understand. I would greatly appreciate any responses based on these specifications, sorry again if anything I said is totally unclear/not even in the realms of possibility.

This is honestly the only laptop that's close to what you want, except it's a slim 15". What you seek can't be had under 14".

http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np8651-clevo-p650se-eta-nov7-p-7690.html

Would this be able to play current gen titles at medium settings? Looking to play the new Batman, Fallout, Witcher, etc.

Would you make any adjustments? Are there any laptops at a similar price that are better?

Even better than you hope. It'll play the Witcher 3 on High at 1080p, for example, so it's good for this generation of games.

Last time i will bother you haha! The night before purchase i come across this one in a flyer , price also €699.

http://www.mediamarkt.nl/mcs/produc...9442943-,10259,512030,2015197.html?langId=-11

The fact that it has an i7 processor and geforce 820 card doesnt make it a better purchase over the one with i5 ,840 card and the ssd, correct? With regularly playing a game like Star ward the old republic and regular schoolwork with ms office.

Thanks again

The 820M is gahbage, so only buy that one if you don't want to enjoy your gaming.

Hey there, need some advice on buying a laptop, my GF wants to play FFXIV Heavensward together (one on PS4 and the other on a laptop).

Country: Netherlands
Maximum budget: 1000 euro (flexible)
Max size: 15+
Planned usage: MMO gaming (Final Fantasy XIV Heavensward) and every day use of downloading series and movies and streaming it through the TV. I like to play on highest settings with DX11 if possible.

Additional : I'm planning on hooking it up to a 22'' monitor and use it more like a desktop (don't have room for a desktop hence the laptop). Will this impact quality?

Was looking at the lenovo Y50, I'm able to get it for 800,- with 2.5 years of warranty and insurance.

Cheers!

K.Jack, I hope you see this before a place my order.

I own a Sager NP9170. The LED display recently developed a green vertical line going down the right side of the screen. I called Sager, but they wanted to charge me a ridiculous $400 for parts and labor. I've priced the screen for as low as $65 US, and I've done a trail run. So I know I can do the repairs myself.

My question is are there any red flags I should look out for, or will any compatible screen suffice?

Anyone know any good model with hdmi input? (yes, input)
I know it sound strange, but I move around a lot, plus I don't have to much space, and I want to be able to play with my consoles without carrying an extra monitor/tv.

Country: UK
Maximum budget. : ~£1400
Max size 17"

I'm thinking of biting on the NP8651. It's more "out of the mainstream" (read: not a Dell or a MacBook) than other laptops I'm familiar with, and I notice they want quite a bit of extra cash to include Windows 8.1. Is there anything difficult/unpredictable about getting Windows running on this machine, or is it just a high margin upsell?

I appreciate your help!

Saw that Intel has released the i7 5700 series. I've only seen MSIs with the part. I want to buy the 8651 with the part but it doesn't seem available yet. I'm dying to move away from my Lenovo Y470 and it's intermittent touchpad.

So this may be an odd question. I thought I had settled on just saving up $2400 and going after an 18.4" MSI Titan. That was going to take me a while, though, maybe up to another 18 months before I'd have the funds.

I currently have an Asus N53S with an nVidia GeForce GT 630M (2 GB). Given that I have over 60 Steam games to work through, I'm not necessarily in a huge rush to replace it. It does a good job and has a 1080p 15.6" monitor. I'm not looking to fire up a lot of the more recent games out there because of my backlog, so the laptop isn't really needed to push graphics powerhouses like Witcher 3 or Shadow of Mordor.

So now I'm thinking instead to grab this monitor (BenQ 24in LED) along with a Logitech wireless kb/m. I have the 360 controller and Sennheiser headphones. Basically hook it all up to the laptop and play on a bigger screen.

This also makes the purchase of an MSI not nearly as expensive. I wouldn't necessarily need an 18" monitor. In fact, I might be able to shrink it down to 14" assuming that most of my gaming will be when I'm plugged into the monitor and most of the time I have the laptop "out and about" I'll be writing or browsing.

Has anyone else gone this route? Is the BenQ a good monitor?

Sorry I haven't been around, my work hours have been crazy.

Cheers!

Need links to some of your computer sites.

I'd go with a high quality screen. Call Xotic PC and ask for an AUO B173W01 V.5, it'll cost around $150 but it's literally the best matte screen available.

Nope there's nothing with HDMI-In.

I'd go with one of these. Add 8GB RAM, GTX 980M, 240GB mSATA SSD, and a 1TB HDD, and you're at £1,343.00 with a killer machine.

I have no idea what site you're buying from, where it's expensive, because on a site like Xotic PC the OS is the usual $80.

In 18 months the Titan may not even exist.

So my current laptop seems to be dying and I think I need a new one. Just got some birthday money so I have somewhere in the range of £300 to £350 to spend.

The best one I've seen is this one (AMD A8 Quad Core, Radeon R7 graphics, 8GB RAM) for a steal at £300.

Do you guys think this is a good deal? Or could I potentially get something better for a similar price?

I'm pretty certain that machine is the best you can do.

Is the default processor good enough?

Yeah it's sufficient. If anything, it's better to spend CPU money on a larger SSD.

Is $79 for the following warranty a good deal (serious question lol):

"2 Year Parts & LIFETIME Ltd Labor Warranty w/ Lifetime 24/7 DOMESTIC Customer Support"

Yes. I always want people to go for the 2 year warranty. When you don't, your laptop will tragically die a day after the 1 year warranty is up.
