Shout out to current GameTrailers crew: the best I've ever felt about gaming media

A great rediscovery! Excellent Just Played videos covering the games of E3 as well as a pretty great podcast with GT Time. I dig their video game passion and getting deep in mechanics/experiences of games. Reminds me of 1up yours.

Does every gametrailers praise thread have to inevitably shit on Giant bomb? We get it, you don't like gb, and that's fine, how about just talking about how much you like gt?

I'm not going to urinate on GB, or at least try not to, but I think most of their appeal is how funny they are when they rip on something bad. I loved watching their Game Room Quick Looks back in the day. Hilarious stuff. Loved every one of them.

But when they are presented with something cool or something that isn't inherently bad, they just come off poorly—almost douchey. What turned me off of their E3 coverage wasn't that they weren't impressed, but that some actually seemed angry. Like, I don't know the guys by name, but the one that was on the far left was visibly angry after the FF7 trailer and shouted something like, "Anyone excited for this better never complain about an HD remaster ever again," accompanied by obligatory, hyperbolic eye roll and head shaking.

If I wanted to watch someone be angry at something awesome, I'd watch Angry Joe. And I don't. That gets old.

And that's why GT is a breath of fresh air in this day of ranting and fist pounding and "meh" mentalities.

I know it's a different game.. But sad the Shayne and Marcus (OGs) are behind a paywall... While these guys especially Turtledove productions.. Are still coming off the hip. My weekend hangovers wouldn't be the same with out GT...

E3 was a breakout performance by them, they're pretty great and obviously hard workers with the time they put in over the week. Their content could be structured better and a little all over the place if you follow them via youtube but they're a good up and coming outlet that more people should be paying attention to.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
Bosman, Jones, and Huber for president.

All of the Bosmans, actually.

But would it be that terrible if they decided to go for a pay model?, I think their content is great and if extra revenue is going to allow them to sustain and create even better content, why not?. Of course it depends of how much it would be and stuff like that.

Man I'd love to know if this thread is representative of most of GAFs opinions about the GT crew. I liked GT back when Invisible Walls was non-video recording and Pachter became popular on the Bonus Round, but I felt a bigger disconnect over time and stopped checking on Gametrailers about a year ago.

There should be a poll asking GAF if Gametrailers has improved within the last 2 years.

Felt like I was watching an embarrassing fanboy circle jerk whenever that .gif gets posted.

I guess they're fine if all you care about in the media is the hype machine.
That's not really true though. I feel like they're fairly critical when shit goes down. But considering how there's for example nothing wrong with FF7 remake right now (partly because it barely exists yet) I don't see what's wrong with getting excited about it.

Been following GT for years and years and right now it's better than it's ever been. Moving to Defy was just huge for how much better they've become (probably out of necessity). I love everything they do, especially Tabletop Adventures and stuff with Ben. I always try to catch their daily live Twitch Streams too which I wish they'd do more of.

It's funny to see a lot of people around here suddenly start praising the Gametrailers folks for their upbeat and positive attitude considering the majority of GAF seems to just hate everything recently and complain for the sake of complaining. :p

That's probably a big part of the reason why. Oppressive negativity gets to people after a while.

I can't quite just throw Giant bomb under the bus for just being subdued, they have their tastes and their brand of comedy, I know what to expect and when they do go indepth it's something good.

However the whole crust of cynicism prevading the media today while understandable is still stupid bullshit you have to stand for something if something is pissing you off.

GT crew has energy that I can feed off of and their reactions and their brand being so different is what makes me give them props. They are being different and a market is being served. :)

They made the E3 of Dreams that little bit better. I didn't really take much notice of the crew before - I watched the occasional GameTrailers video like the Bonus Round or a top ten list now and then - but after this E3, the likes of Huber, Jones and Bosman are definitely on my radar. I like the positivity and passion they exert on a regular basis - that sort of thing goes a long way these days.

All you new fans make sure to tune into Kyle Bosman's hour long comedy special coming soon to twitch. Tweet about it. Tell all your friends.

I 100% agree with OP. Oddly enough, I first got acquainted with the current GT crew via their Tabletop Adventures episodes. I then started watching Mandatory Update, Final Bosman, etc. I absolutely love these guys/gals.

Have to agree; while I think the E3 Sony reaction was a bit over the top, it at least showed excitement for things I also felt excitement for.

The GB crew looked like a MS rep was on the other side of the camera reminding them to not show any enthusiasm for the Sony presser (not literally). I have only looked at recent GB stuff related to games I am interested in, so I am not sure if they are normally negative and/or reserved towards many games, simply don't like games like UC4, FF7_r, SM3, or TLG, or something else.

In the end I prefer media that meshes well with my interests. It helps me feel like I can trust their thoughts on games a bit more seeing they share my reactions to things.

Great entertainment. Love listening to GT time and I'm happy they're getting recognition.

Also, Kyle Bosman's upcoming one hour comedy special needs to be promoted. 1000+ viewers or bust.

Yeah they are all beyond great, been all in for a couple years now. Love all their daily twitch streaming as well, a perfect backdrop for work. It's GAF and GT for me, a couple other sites might get 5 minutes a week of perusal if any.

Totally with you OP, their e3 coverage was awesome and really connected with me. Bosman was always on point but I think I'm gonna keep an eye on the ohters too from now on.

Keep an eye on Ben Moore this guy is like.. the moment that games criticism (at least in video form) met the level of film criticism imo.

I found it kind of sad when GAF fell out of love with them since the GT tends to be one of the most sincere and upbeat gaming news outlets. I strongly believe a lot of the blame about losing their audience lied with their shitty video player.

The youtube push along with E3 will hopefully keep them in everyone's minds for a long long time.

I agree it was a great moment but I wonder if it was a honest reaction, I sometimes got the feeling it was staged (to some degree)

GT made me remember what it was like to be young and legitimately excited and happy for a video game announcement. It's a good feeling that I haven't felt in a long time and I thank GT for that.

To be a liar you mean.

Also OP, way to make this praise thread come off as a bait thread instead. You really couldn't praise GT without trying to bag on Giant Bomb in the process?

I didn't mean to make it so, I only mentioned them once, and I do like GiantBomb and listen to their podcasts every week, but I do have a problem with their tone. Even when they are enthusiastic about a game they sound like they are too cool to show it and just sort of snigger "heh yeah it's FUCKING cool breh heh" - it's a tone thing for me but they are def smart guys and do a good job overall imo.

They made the E3 of Dreams that little bit better. Man I forget that Bonus Round is even part of GT, I really hate it tbh.

Not close to the old 1Ups but nice to have some fresh faces in gaming. Bosman was nice in his first episodes and still hits the spot sometimes like in his vibe video. Jones is nice too, not a fan of the rest. Too hyperbolic for me.

And make sure to go preorder it and then buy all the Throwback Costume Packs when they launch alongside the game, too! /s

Pre-order culture is a real, definite problem in games, and that people will flip their shit and go into hype machine mode over a CG video for a video game years away contributes to it. Seriously, there is world of difference between "I'm looking forward to this thing" and jumping around quite like a child at the knowledge of its existence.

Also, specifically in the case of FF7, Giant Bomb has never been big on it. The closest is Brad, and he's too old to not prefer the SNES stuff. They're all about FF6. Go look at any of the E3 aftershow stuff they did, and look at what they're actually excited about (read: Horizon, VR, Recore, Just Cause 3, Deus Ex, the rest of Uncharted 4 we didn't see). They aren't down on video games. They just have different tastes than you and even Dan "The Great Manchild" Ryckert doesn't express them by acting like he needs to be put down for a nap at 2 pm.

What cynicism this is! Do they even like games? Ugh!

If you suffer from second-hand embarrassment watching people get hyped about video games... you probably shouldn't watch E3. Just a tip
Please. I watch the E3 announcements but I don't watch this sort of nonsense along with it. I genuinely don't see the point of this sort of content at all, other than GIF fodder. Why watch a group of people reacting to the announcements instead of just watching the announcements themselves?

This just seems like a group of people acutely aware of the fact that they're on camera and overcompensating accordingly, no doubt to sell whatever cult of personality they've been cultivating. It's cringeworthy.

About, 8 months ago, I said that Gametrailers would be the next major site on the chopping block.

Now, they are my number two resource for personality driven game stuff, right behind Giant Bomb.

The GT Crew is doing god's work. Their stuff have been nothing short of amazing.

YEAH! AND THOSE HOT PEPPER GUYS?!? MAN WHY WOULD ANYONE BOTHER EATING A HOT PEPPER TO REVIEW GAMES!?! BUNCH OF TRY HARDS! AND ALL THOSE LET'S PLAYERS? FUCK'EM! THEY AREN'T DOING ANY MORE THAN I DO IN MY HOUSE! WHY IS EVERYONE SO FOCUSED ON BEING "ENTERTAINING"? FUCK THAT SHIT, GET IT OUT OF MY FACE!

It must suck to be so dead inside. There's absolutely no overcompensating or overacting in GT's reactions. If you've actually watched them for any length of time you'd know that they genuinely care that much about those games. They're also not hyped about every single game in existence and get quite critical of things without being overly cynical.

Another thread praising GT popped up a few days ago. The only GT guy I know is Kyle Bosman (and he's fantastic), but you guys are making me curious... I'll give the rest of the crew a chance.

Why do people watch the conferences with commentary? Seems odd. I know that they're boring at times but I'd find it annoying having people talk over it.

I don't think I ever heard one of the GT crew say something positive about preorder. You can loose your marbles over an announcement and still be critical when it comes to the actual meat.

And I actually agree with what you say about GB, just the idea that the GT crew is part of the senseless hypemachine strikes me as wrong.

I can definitely recommend GT time. Kyle is hosting and you get a good look at pretty much everyone who's working there.

False dichotomy?

I just started watching GT content, aside from the Final Bosman, after E3 and I've been loving it. They're such a breath of fresh air, but that might be because I've been on a strictly GIantBomb diet for the past few years, haha.

Either way, I'm excited to hear other people excited about video games. It's been awhile.

Also Kinda Funny is pretty great as well. Love those guys!!

They haven't, ever. They're actively against "pre-order now" stuff - especially Kyle. He knocks points off in Trailer Score every single time someone does it.

Because they are often much more entertaining then the conferences themselves, especially during the inevitable lull in during the middle of all of them. If done well (no stream drops, you know when to stop talking, you're not shouting over each other), they can be amazing pieces of content. GT's stuff was super good this year, GB's stuff was also excellent. I had high hopes for SuperBestFriends' stuff, but it was of a much poorer quality compared to what they did last year.

And when they debate points of disagreement with each other they actually seem to be passionate about their views rather than some of the other outlets where they just sit there agreeing that everything is terrible followed by "yes" "heh" "lol" *snigger* etc.

This really gets on my nerves. If all your cohosts agree with nearly everything being said then why are there other hosts? Imagine first take on ESPN if after Skip Bayles says something Stephen Smith just said " yea ".

So Sunday Night Football preshows then?
I agree with you

I love them. But I'm really sad because GT Time is one of the few podcasts that for some reason is blocked in my work place, so I never have time to listen to it.

Really like the GT staff but I have to say I'm quite disappointed on how positive they are on everything PS4 related and not really positive, at most they are neutral and factually correct, about Xbox One.

They were hitting really hard at MS after the initial Xbox One reveal but we came a long way from there and, having both systems myself, I think MS's E3 showing was way better than Sony (even if it's just because almost all games are for this year) and they even didn't care to get some facts straight about BC or MS's releases.

Besides that, their coverage of games with let's plays and reviews plus Huber Hype, Mandatory Update, Bosman Show and GT Time are always on my schedule of shows to watch.

I do miss Pach Attack tho..

I really liked their pre-Defy media crew.

I still like their current setup too, making the most of who they have rather than having a large amount of people.

False dichotomy?

I think I'll answer one post with another here. And in response to the latter- not really, but what would be the point of watching the announcements and then watching them again with commentary? Because there's no way you could hear absolutely everything over all of that shouting and screaming, which defeats the point of watching them in the first place.
