No Man's Sky is the featured game for IGN's First of July

My point is that both colin and gregg were asking those questions genuinely, not reiterating for the audience. Everything they were unsure of pre gregg getting the hands on at E3 was stuff we have known about for a long time.

That's where the problem arises, why aren't they aware of all this stuff? Is it that they are busy and don't have time to do in depth research? Most likely but when me as someone who just reads gaf knows more about the game than people who have years of experience in the industry, have various contacts and gets paid to comment on games for a living its just kind of disheartening as a fan, you know what I mean?

And I have no idea why Gregg thinks this is a $20 game. That just seems absurd to me to try and lot this game as the same experience and scale as Minecraft.

I can't believe I've been checking IGN every hour to see if this is up yet >_< Site looks a lot different from when I last visited it.

Yeah, I definitely see it as a $40 title. Especially now that we know it's getting a retail release.

This is a $60 game through and through in my book. I'll gladly pay $60 for it. The only reason why I could see they don't sell it for $60 is if they feel people will have this expectation what a $60 game is and that this is too different for that, though I disagree with that view.

I disagree with that view too, but unfortunately it's one a lot of people have. When the boxart was shown you had comments like "this better not be $60 since only 10 people are making it." I think pricing it similarly to Minecraft would be the right move.

Retail release means 20% off for GCU. So I'm fine with this.

I appreciate everyone's enthusiasm here. We are stoked too. :-)

Saves me 5 days of compulsively checking this thread for a release date, thanks!

Why wouldn't this be a 60 dollar game? You guys got some fanciful notions.

Yeah seriously. Why shouldn't it be $60? It looks awesome, it isn't pixel art or retro looking. I would gladly pay $60 for this game.

If the game excites you, you should be more than happy to give the developers $60 if it looks like the game deserves it.

Because it's an indie game. I'd have no problem paying 60 obviously but I wouldnt be surprised if it was 40.

That seems... a tad harsh to limit what something can/cannot be priced at simply because they haven't shacked up with a major publisher. I'm not saying I wouldn't mind if it were $40-- hell I wish most physical retail releases were such-- but if Hello Games looks at what they've made and say "this easily provides a level of entertainment that is on par with other titles being sold for $60", then good for them. If someone doesn't think that $60 is worth the product they're offering, then they should wait.

Agreed. Personally, I was hoping it wouldn't be 60 dollars and my hope was tied to the fact it was an indie game. But that doesn't mean I don't think they are unreasonable to ask 60 bux or think that it should be less than 60 cause it's an indie. Just being on a budget and having a ton of other games I want this year I was kinda hoping that since it wasn't a big budget (AAA) game that maybe it would be priced like other indies. I have no hopes for big budget games like Fallout cause big publishers pretty much make 60 bux a standard price for those games (hell, apparently Fallout is more if you want it digitally in Europe).

Honestly, I think it's more fair to price on how much game you get and how replayable. I think most third person shooters and first person shooters (linear type games) are overpriced at 60 bux cause most last you a short time (10-20 hours) and aren't that replayable cause they are the same every replaying. Where as a game like Witcher or Fallout I think is a great deal for 60 bux. I bet NMS will be too.

Aaaaand I can stop refreshing IGN today.

there are many reasons to get a PS4, a game that is also on PC isnt one of them surely?
Not every person wants to play games on a PC or wants to go about building a PC. This game makes him willing to buy new hardware to play it, in this case it is the PS4.

As I posted in the other thread:

Just took a look at some past IGN Firsts

Xcom 2 IGN First June 2015, releasing November 2015

Rock Band 4 IGN First May 2015, releasing late 2015

Witcher 3 IGN First April 2015, released May 2015

Bloodborne IGN First February 2015, released March 2015

so yeah, No Man's Sky shouldn't be too far off :)

It's not just First of July, BTW. Content will be added throughout the month.

Nice breakdown, but I do wish people would stop asking how it's possible. They just don't seem to be able to get their heads around the fact there are NO assets as such, they're generated procedurally. It's basically 12 maths geniuses with a BIG idea.

Yes, no assets 'as such'. I think a lot of people believe every single planet, every single tree, every single plant, every single ship etc, is stored individually on the disc which is why they can't believe a team of 12 could make this.

Yeah, those are all procedural. The base parts have been designed, of course, along with a sort of blueprint (or schema, rather) of what makes up a ship, but then those are combined and tweaked procedurally into millions of possible variations, like an RPG character editor but for ships. And weapons, and animals, and plants, and planets, and solar systems, and entire galaxies (well, at least one, although didn't they say a while back that there would be several?).

Oh man, so excite! My most anticipated game this year for the PS4.

just weird to hear a multiplatform game as a reason to get a system. just as if he had said "this is the reason I want a PC". One usually says that for exclusives :p

whatever floats the boat I guess

If he has neither a PC that can play it nor a PS4, it makes perfect sense. I'm sure Fallout 4 will get all sorts of people to buy a PS4, Xbox One or upgrade their PC. I see no reason why only exclusives can do this.

A multi platform game is honestly a big reason why I got a PS4. 1. I wanted to play Fallout 4 and I was sure that it would be next gen only (this wasn't a question for me after Bethesda said they were done with PS3 for Elder Scrolls a year after Skyrim came out as it could not do what they wanted to do next with it. I just figured this went for Fallout too). 2. If I'm going for a game machine, I'm probably going for a Playstation for many reasons. 3. Otherwise I would have tried to stay happy with a PS3. Especially as until Witcher 3 there were no games I wanted that didn't come out on PS3 as well (witcher 3 justified the PS4 for me but it wasn't why I bought it honestly).

So, it may be that he didn't have a machine to play NMS, and of the ones that would play it (that are known), the Playstation fit most of what he wanted in a next gen machine. See, you don't need exclusives to buy a console. Just many reasons you prefer it and a game, exclusive or not, that gives you an excuse to go ahead and spend money on another game machine.

No fucking research what so ever. So many interviews with Sean about how they are making it, team size etc etc.

I really try to like these dudes from IGN...

What other indie game has been $60? Not even a game as big and fleshed out as Ark promises to be will be $60 when it actually releases. I'm not saying I don't think the package is personally worth $60 to me, but a big reason that indie games are priced lower than AAA games is because they can afford to be priced lower since they cost much less to make than AAA games. HG studios is only about 10 people, they don't need to price it $60 to make a huge profit.

Sean setting the price tag to 60 when 99% of other indies have been lower than 60 would make a clear statement saying "I think my game is bigger and better than other indies and deserve to be priced at $60" and while that may or may not be true, Sean is an extremely humble person and wouldn't want to make that kind of statement. The only reason I think it could be $60 now is because of Sony intervention. Without that, there is no doubt in my mind that Sean would price it below 60.

I think it will be £40, at least for the digital version. It will be releasing on pc at the same time where it will be likely £40 as well. The retail version could be priced higher if they included some extra's like a guide, poster or soundtrack cd. I would be absolutely fine with that and certainly choose the physical version in that case.

Wait are weapons confirmed to be procedurally generated like ships and creatures?

Im an idiot for missing the chance to do the OT.

Hope theres some Mod Abuse in the OT though, particularly bannings for people not reading the OP or thread in general.

I'm confused. What are you referring to here? They aren't even posting the first part of the feature until Monday.
