Physical Version of Shenmue 3 PS4 Now on the Kickstarter

Just read his tweets and it's obvious that he's incurred some wrath. Something tells me he's not doing any more freelancing for Kotaku, either.
Probably not happy about the way I dismantled him in the comments.

Looking at the disparity of likes between my comments and his responses, I don't think Kotaku readers were really on his side...

I like this fan's mock-up:

This sort of design would look great with higher res assets, though it could maybe stand to be be just a little less busy.

I'd love to see something illustrative and Struzan-esque, kinda like the cover art for Shenmue II, or this beautiful piece of work for Jade Empire.

Good example. I really did like Shenmue 2's cover:

Ah, the Dreamcast cover. That cover was cool, but I am partial to the Xbox cover myself.

Such a unique, sparkling piece of art. It has so much storytelling and atmosphere. Love the Hong Kong signage in the background.

I love the Xbox cover. It reminds me of classic Star Wars film posters for some reason. Which seems appropriate for such an epic.

In the style of Drew Struzan who drew the classic posters for Star Wars and Indiana Jones and so many others. Struzan made oil paintings, real works of art.

Gives the whole thing such a poetic, heroic feeling.

My favorite part of the box art is the small depictions of key scenes they show on the fringes of the box. particularly Ryo facing Dou Niu.

Love art like that because it just tells a story all on its own. The art adds the overall experience.

I remember being a kid just staring at the VHS cover art for the Indiana Jones movies and having my imagination captivated.

That Shenmue II cover definitely gives me that feeling.

It's cool, have fans been sending Yu Suzuki mock-up art?
Minor thing, though: I think it shouldn't say "Only On Playstation" because it will be out on PS4 and PC.

I think, as with most things, "exclusive" means exclusive to console. I imagine there have been "Only on Playstation" games that made it to PC before....?

Kotaku's weekend guy is playing with fire. Is it even legal to be cynical about Shenmue?

EDIT: Crap I didn't realize someone had already linked it. Oh well, there's the image if you didn't see it already.

The second half of that paragraph is so hard to read. Is this just badly written?

I've never seen so many people go out of their way to smear this Kickstarter. I don't at all approve of the hate machine being directed at Phil Owen on Twitter (and if you are participating in this: stop it, now), but his stupid post was the latest in a long line of unjustified smears from the press.

What is it with Shenmue which forces the press to hold it to a completely different standard than other gaming Kickstarters?

Looking on his twitter, it doesn't look like people are really tweeting much hate at him. He's mostly just trolling Shenmue fans, and getting "oh you!" responses from his two friends.

Either way, best not to give this freelance "writer" any more of the attention he clearly wants (what with embedding his own tweets in his article, and soliciting twitter hate at the end of his article).

I blocked him a long time ago for something unrelated, so I don't know if the harassment is a figment of his imagination or what, but if it isn't then the Shenmue community needs to rise above it.

But if it is just to raise his profile, then, well, the guy is a bigger ass than I thought (and I thought he was a big enough ass to block). Plus it also cheapens the real harassment that people on Twitter actually get, from the likes of certain stupidgates and so on.

At any rate, my main point was that the press' treatment of Shenmue III has been unusual compared to other Kickstarters, at least from my experience. Compare it to, say, République (awesome game, by the way), which had the press coming out in droves to try and push the flagging campaign over its goal, or even Bloodstained which, embarrassingly, had its investor outed mid-Kickstarter (with none of the Ben Kuchera-style FUD hitpieces). I really get a feeling that some people just have it in for this series, and don't like the idea of people enjoying it.

The other thing is, as I've personally seen on Twitter and in this thread, is that the FUD still persists despite YsNet clearing it up.

I'm glad that both Jason and Luke Plunkett responded in the Kotaku comments.

We've all seen plain to bad to horrible placeholder box art for games we want that are a far ways from release. Has that ever made you say "That's x's box art?! I'm not buying that crap now."? So bland placeholder art should negatively impact a popular KS for a game that fans have been waiting over a decade for? Forget lazy devs. "Lazy placeholder box artist" is the new thing?

Even if Phil tweeted out "Man, that's some fugly placeholder box art. Here's hoping it changes in the ?? years before release. Haha! #saveshenmuesboxart," that junk might be funny. But to make an entire article of it just seems silly to me, as if he's looking for stuff to rail against. And it kind of make Kotaku look petty and small time by association.

I don't know what it is about this Shenmue KS that continues to warrant such scrutiny.

I backed earlier for a physical PC copy even though I don't have a Windows PC to actually play it on. Good that I can now switch it out for a copy for PS4.

But what I'd really like is to get physical copies for both PC and PS4, plus a digital copy for playing. I hope they make this possible, because I'm not going to create extra kickstarter accounts.

Everyone should watched/listen to the SEGA-NERD Shenmue Voice Actors interview. It:s so much fun! They give some solid insight on the voice work then went into Shenmue, the problems they experienced and how much they want for it to improve. The passion is fantastic and they all really want to be in Shenmue III and are completely ape for it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dcvi9Vt3WP4

I've watched this twice now. The fact that the interview was even possible is amazing. The amount of passion in the video is inspiring, to say the least.

This Shenmue kickstarter has really brought out the worst of video game fans and video game "journalists". What a sad state of affairs. In an industry about having fun everyone sure loves to be a cynical snide prick and pick every fucking thing apart in the most joyless soul sucking way possible.

On the bright side, it's also brought out the greatest of fans.

I thought it was terrific seeing a major platform holder get out there and support a beloved project via Kickstarter. I mean I know Sony is a profit-driven, soulless legal entity - but it's made up of individuals (hi Adam) and they were doing it for the love of the hobby and all. It got me excited and I raced to pledge.

Then started reading the articles and comments. Ugh. This demographic sometimes.

I don't know how many GAFers works for a big corporation, but I do feel like there's always a general sentiment, and I can't say it's entirely undeserved sometimes, that "corporations" are not people.

At the core of it all, we're still talking about a group of people, often times making tough decisions, with limited amounts of money. Honestly, nobody enjoys making painful decisions.

Who ever wrote this in the Kotaku comment nailed it. That idiot really does need to go because the article was THAT stupid:

"Phil, this is coming from a game dev that you and a number of your readers will know. I don’t care or mean to offend you personally, but I’m a little stunned Kotaku published your article. And to clarify something immediately, I’m not a huge fan of Shenmue. But for you to begin an article with “I don’t particularly care...I don’t fund other people’s creative endeavors” is a little perplexing considering you’re writing for a publication that stays afloat by writing about said endeavors.

We already live in a time in which artists are expected, more and more, to give the best of themselves for free. For someone in your position to basically say “creative endeavor (art) is literally worthless” is bizarre. We don’t need entitled critics whining into their microphones that they’re better than the games they write about.

Next time you get a cold handshake (and if I don’t laugh at your shitty jokes) take a moment to wonder who read you’re revealing little article.

It’s a fantasy, but I’d love to see Kotaku let you go."

This is perfect!

I like this fan's mock-up:

That is a really beautiful design, especially how the blossoms frame in the characters. Definitely made with an artist's eye.

Though the analyst in me needs to point out that it's not "Only on PlayStation", and there isn't a 22-person online multiplayer mode and local multiplayer. At least, I hope not!

It's a nice placeholder, but at the same time, it could be misleading if Xiu Ying and Ren isn't going to be in Shenmue 3.

I mean, so far, based off the Kickstarter page, we only have Ryo, Shenhua, Lan Di & Niao Sun confirmed for the game. =/

And so far, it looks like Shenmue 3 will only be based in Guilin. No going back to Hong Kong yet.

Completely true. No point creating early promo for something that isn't likely, in this case, Ren and so on.

Perfect response to sum up the idiocy of this article. When JSchrier starts condemning your damn article from the same site he works on you know you've done fucked it up. Fucking burn material right there.

cross posting from the other thread and the KS, because some people are still unsure

All backers pledging for a $60 Reward tier or higher, will have the option of a PS4 Physical Copy as their platform choice.

so don't think you're limited to the $60 tier.

Frankly, I'm surprise that these so-called journalist has escape with such BS for so long. I don't give a damn what anyone says, if you write for a magazine or any sort of media then you are representing that media and media credibility is imperative. Your article will result in the acquisition or departure of your readers and subscribers. It's madness for anyone to purely think "oh, it's just that writer so don't worry." NO. That's ill thinking. Kotaku is not a forum where anyone can do and say anything within limits. Whether you are a full time editor or a freelancer, when you write an article and release it out there you represent a label, a brand, a badge, so you should conduct yourself professionally within and outwardly from it. The fact that this article and countless others got accepted for release only solidify why myself and countless others has "stopped" reading from that site... because the amount/level of garbage outweighs the good, we cannot be bothered to keep waiting nor hunting for good articles when there are many alternatives medias out there for us to read in its stead, and trust in any articles whether it:s factual or opinion goes out the window. i.e. tarnished credibility.

So in short, that idiot and many others from that site got to go and Kotaku and any other similar medias out their need to start addressing themselves. BS can only go on for so long and they are NOT above the industry.

I'm backing for a physical ps4 copy when I can afford. Still can't believe I'll own this, last guardian, and ff15 in the next 2-3 years. Gaming's new golden age!
