Any links or images? Would love to see people go against that idiot.
Just read his tweets and it's obvious that he's incurred some wrath. Something tells me he's not doing any more freelancing for Kotaku, either.

Probably not happy about the way I dismantled him in the comments.Just read his tweets and it's obvious that he's incurred some wrath. Something tells me he's not doing any more freelancing for Kotaku, either.

This sort of design would look great with higher res assets, though it could maybe stand to be be just a little less busy.I like this fan's mock-up:

I'd love to see something illustrative and Struzan-esque, kinda like the cover art for Shenmue II, or this beautiful piece of work for Jade Empire
Ah, the Dreamcast cover. That cover was cool, but I am partial to the Xbox cover myself.Good example. I really did like Shenmue 2's cover:

Such a unique, sparkling piece of art. It has so much storytelling and atmosphere. Love the Hong Kong signage in the background.

In the style of Drew Struzan who drew the classic posters for Star Wars and Indiana Jones and so many others. Struzan made oil paintings, real works of art.I love the Xbox cover. It reminds me of classic Star Wars film posters for some reason. Which seems appropriate for such an epic.

Gives the whole thing such a poetic, heroic feeling.

Love art like that because it just tells a story all on its own. The art adds the overall experience. My favorite part of the box art is the small depictions of key scenes they show on the fringes of the box. particularly Ryo facing Dou Niu.
It's cool, have fans been sending Yu Suzuki mock-up art?
Minor thing, though: I think it shouldn't say "Only On Playstation" because it will be out on PS4 and PC.

Kotaku's weekend guy is playing with fire. Is it even legal to be cynical about Shenmue?
EDIT: Crap I didn't realize someone had already linked it. Oh well, there's the image if you didn't see it already.
Yes.The second half of that paragraph is so hard to read. Is this just badly written?
Looking on his twitter, it doesn't look like people are really tweeting much hate at him. He's mostly just trolling Shenmue fans, and getting "oh you!" responses from his two friends.I've never seen so many people go out of their way to smear this Kickstarter. I don't at all approve of the hate machine being directed at Phil Owen on Twitter (and if you are participating in this: stop it, now), but his stupid post was the latest in a long line of unjustified smears from the press.
What is it with Shenmue which forces the press to hold it to a completely different standard than other gaming Kickstarters?
Tyranny of Shenmue? The hell kind of delusion of this? He sounds like the Glenn Beck of the gaming world.Just read his tweets and it's obvious that he's incurred some wrath. Something tells me he's not doing any more freelancing for Kotaku, either.
I blocked him a long time ago for something unrelated, so I don't know if the harassment is a figment of his imagination or what, but if it isn't then the Shenmue community needs to rise above it.Looking on his twitter, it doesn't look like people are really tweeting any hate at him. Either way, best not to give this freelance "writer" any more of the attention he clearly wants (what with embedding his own tweets in his article, and soliciting twitter hate at the end of his article).
You should. It's going to be worth a lot more than $60 in the future.I may increase my pledge to get a physical copy. I really should, what's another $30-ish dollars.
Forward that to awesome japan or ysnet so they can replace their current placeholder with that. They may do it or do somethingvcooler or more appropriate if they have time though not that important.I like this fan's mock-up:

It must have killed their dog. There's no other explanation for this level of 'scrutiny'.I don't know what it is about this Shenmue KS that continues to warrant such scrutiny.

Everyone should watched/listen to the SEGA-NERD Shenmue Voice Actors interview. It:s so much fun! They give some solid insight on the voice work then went into Shenmue, the problems they experienced and how much they want for it to improve. The passion is fantastic and they all really want to be in Shenmue III and are completely ape for it:

Aaaand... done. That was remarkably painless. Took like 30 seconds.
Just backed the physical PS4 copy. Kickstarter is a revolution.
This Shenmue kickstarter has really brought out the worst of video game fans and video game "journalists". What a sad state of affairs. In an industry about having fun everyone sure loves to be a cynical snide prick and pick every fucking thing apart in the most joyless soul sucking way possible.

I thought it was terrific seeing a major platform holder get out there and support a beloved project via Kickstarter. I mean I know Sony is a profit-driven, soulless legal entity - but it's made up of individuals (hi Adam) and they were doing it for the love of the hobby and all. It got me excited and I raced to pledge.
Then started reading the articles and comments. Ugh. This demographic sometimes.
I'm glad that both Jason and Luke Plunkett responded in the Kotaku comments.
We've all seen plain to bad to horrible placeholder box art for games we want that are a far ways from release. Has that ever made you say "That's x's box art?! I'm not buying that crap now."? So bland placeholder art should negatively impact a popular KS for a game that fans have been waiting over a decade for? Forget lazy devs. "Lazy placeholder box artist" is the new thing?
Even if Phil tweeted out "Man, that's some fugly placeholder box art. Here's hoping it changes in the ?? years before release. Haha! #saveshenmuesboxart," that junk might be funny. But to make an entire article of it just seems silly to me, as if he's looking for stuff to rail against. And it kind of make Kotaku look petty and small time by association.
I don't know what it is about this Shenmue KS that continues to warrant such scrutiny.
Who ever wrote this in the Kotaku comment nailed it. That idiot really does need to go because the article was THAT stupid:
"Phil, this is coming from a game dev that you and a number of your readers will know. I dont care or mean to offend you personally, but Im a little stunned Kotaku published your article. And to clarify something immediately, Im not a huge fan of Shenmue. But for you to begin an article with I dont particularly care...I dont fund other peoples creative endeavors is a little perplexing considering youre writing for a publication that stays afloat by writing about said endeavors.
We already live in a time in which artists are expected, more and more, to give the best of themselves for free. For someone in your position to basically say creative endeavor (art) is literally worthless is bizarre. We dont need entitled critics whining into their microphones that theyre better than the games they write about.
Next time you get a cold handshake (and if I dont laugh at your shitty jokes) take a moment to wonder who read youre revealing little article.
Its a fantasy, but Id love to see Kotaku let you go."

This is good. Wonder who it is.
It's a nice placeholder, but at the same time, it could be misleading if Xiu Ying and Ren isn't going to be in Shenmue 3.
I mean, so far, based off the Kickstarter page, we only have Ryo, Shenhua, Lan Di & Niao Sun confirmed for the game. =/

All backers pledging for a $60 Reward tier or higher, will have the option of a PS4 Physical Copy as their platform choice.
Perfect response to sum up the idiocy of this article. When JSchrier starts condemning your damn article from the same site he works on you know you've done fucked it up. Fucking burn material right there.
