2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Hey guys I'm looking for a laptop for school. Could someone help me find some options?

This is my list of features that I would like in it. From most to least important.

- at least 1080p resolution
- at least 500GB HDD (SSD is nice but too little storage)
- screen size 15 inch or less. Must be light.
- if it can be one of those flipbook with touchscreen that would be nice.
- I'm a PC gamer so if I can run some normal games like Starbound, Castle Crashers on it that would be awesome. But its not a big deal if the laptop if its not built for light gaming.
- around $1000, more or less.

Thank you.

Thanks for this thread, I'm looking for a 2-in-1 that is primarily for work so I want something portable but want to be able to play some games during downtime. I know I'm not getting a gaming monster but to be able to play games like XCom and Dishonored is my goal. For the more graphically intensive games I'll use my PC or gaming consoles. Any recommendations?

Country: USA
Budget: 2000
Max size: 15
Usage: Primarily a travel/work machine mostly used for notes and Office presentations. Mostly RPG, Strat (think XCom) but would like the opportunity to play a game like dishonored with no issues.
Other: Battery life is important as I spend a lot of time on planes on flights that are 5 to 18 hours. Also Lenovo is not an option.

My gaming laptop died

What brands are considered most reliable and which should be avoided?

Don't really need another gaming laptop but I still plan to play hearthstone, watch video and browse gaf :-P

I was thinking i5 and 1080p screen, 15 inches

Any suggestions? Budget around 700-900 Canadian but I could go closer to 1000

Thanks

How fast do laptop parts go obsolete these days where you absolutely want to upgrade your machine in terms of CPU and GPU? A more specific example would be the 980m and whatever was the last major mobile GPU before it and maybe the one before that to average it out a bit better? How long was that and how does that last generation mobile GPU hold up today knowing that you'd go from high/ultra to somewhere in the range of medium graphics? Same goes for the CPU but I haven't exactly been following those as closely.

I'm looking into selling my desktop and going with a gaming laptop since I've run into space constraints with my trusty desktop set up ever since moving. Another part of it is being able to move myself around as well as pack up and book it in the event of some accidental (or not) man-made disaster in these new high-rises.

I'm full aware of laptops going much quicker than the desktop since you can't just pluck the graphics card and maybe upgrade the cooling to overclock the CPU in order to squeeze more life out of aging technology but I was wondering at what rate. Maybe or maybe not that Sager from XoticPC with whatever the best CPU/GPU in it is lasting me 5+ years comfortably or would I worry about last legs going into maybe year 4?

How is this laptop? It's $300 cheaper than retail last $1200 tax free.

My girlfriend is thinking about buying the 13" mac book pro. She's open to windows machines, but she really wants something that's very reliable. We're looking to play Final Fantasy XIV together, so a computer that can run that pretty well, lasts, and has a good physical design is what she is looking for (good looking, portable). Probably $1300 is the limit we're looking at.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm hesitant to buy a top of the line gaming laptop right now because the GTX 980m came out so long ago. At a different message board I asked what is up with laptop GPUs seeming to be advancing so slowly lately and they said to blame the rise of APUs.

HDMI inputs don't exist in gaming laptops.
If you really don't have a budget, you could get both a proper gaming laptop and a decent portable monitor with HDMI input.

There was an Alienware m17x a couple of years ago that did have an HDMI input actually, the R4 if memory serves but maybe the R3 did too.

Oh that's cool.
Pretty sure there aren't any HDMI input gaming laptops today though. Which is a shame.

I'm feeling tech illiterate here. Is there some sort of difference between "HDMI input" and "HDMI port"? I thought having a port for a type of cable was the same as having a input for it. The only computer I've encountered within the past 6 years that didn't have a slot for HDMI was a MacBook.

Ah. That's more commonly referred to as an HDMI output, i.e. the laptop is the source of the image and displays it onto a TV via an HDMI. Nearly all gaming laptops have HDMI out.
An HDMI input is typically used in the context of TVs and monitors. An HDMI input in a laptop implies that you can e.g. connect a game console and have it display onto the laptop's screen. This type of capability is pretty much non-existent.
An HDMI port can either be an input or an output, depending on the hardware.

I picked up a new laptop but it wasn't a gaming one like recommended lol. Got myself an i7 Spectre x360 from HP. It can probably do the low end gaming I want no problem bit with the portability I need for work.

Thanks for recs though folks!

xotic pc is asking for a pic of my credit card and picture ID, has anyone else gotten that request?

Seems like a bunch of shit to go through buying a laptop when I could've just gone Amazon.

All the Slickdeals people seem excited about this HP Sale going on right now, so I'd like to get something before the deal dies.

I read the OP but I'm still an idiot at this stuff so any help is appreciated if what I'm saying makes no sense!

Country: USA
Maximum Budget: ~$1000 after rebate and coupon code, so I guess up to $1700 if this envy 17t deal is right?
Max Size: 15.6 Max
Intended Usage: Everyday computer use and I guess Dolphin or D4 at medium/high settings.

Misc Notes: I'd like for there to be non-terrible built in speakers, I know this is stupid but I don't want the hassle of external ones. Anything louder and clearer than these AWFUL built in speakers on my three year old Aspire would be good.

Also stupid I know but a non-terrible trackpad would be good.

I'd like really good boot times so that means I should get something with SSD right?

Windows 7 would be fine but if everything else is good I'm willing to put up with Windows 8 or 10 upgrade.

There aren't really any brands to avoid, anymore.

It's sad how far $1k CAD doesn't go. The most GPU power you'll find is this.

How long does xoticpc take for it charge your bank account? it's been a few days now.

Been charged yet?

The prior cards to the 980M (880M/780M, same card really) played last generation's game on Ultra, today's on High. When you buy a flagship card, you should expect it to last the entirety of the console gen in which you bought it, but 4 years is a good rule of thumb..

Just okay, 4K goes a bit wasted with that GPU. I'd rather buy one of these.

Is choosing to install windows on the laptop ssd as simple as it prompting you to? Or does it install on the hdd by default and you have to change it?

The OS installs to whatever drive is in the primary bay.

Buy a Y50 instead.

Laptop GPUs are advancing at the same speed as desktops, with both dying to see a die shrink. APUs have nothing to do with anything.

With no budget, you buy an MSI GT72.

If a laptop is on Amazon, you always buy it on Amazon.

Avoid Xoticpc. They gave me a lot of trouble with my sager notebook. 3 week shipping bar the delay that they messed up my order.

Sorry for your troubles, but your experience is definitely the exception, not the standard.

Even with that deal, I'd take the Y50 over it, simply based on GPU power.

Thanks man! I see the negative reviews complain about the screen and the trackpad. If I'm willing to take a hit on GPU to improve those are there any other options?

(as dumb as it sounds, those are slightly bigger priorities if I'm being honest about how I plan to use the thing).

Four years sounds safe.

Country where it will be purchased. USA

Maximum budget. 1500, flexible if something is worth getting for a bit more. if something isn't worth it and i save a bit, that's cool too.

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight). I think my bag will safely fit something 15", maybe 17" for when I need to pack up and gtfo. Outside of that, I've never really checked.

Planned usage (what kind of games or specific games it must run, if heavily gaming at all). GW2, Blade & Soul, Witcher 3, occasional twitch streaming though I may increase frequency,

Ideally you'll point out what resolution and settings are your standard, based off of what I've laid out in the OP. 1920x1080

Whatever else you find relevant, misc. things such as desired battery life, screen resolution, fan noise, etc.
  • Numpad-less options? I'm actually quite fond of the "laptop" layout where page up/down, insert, and delete are on that row on the right side. It doesn't look available above 14 inches or so in gaming laptops though as far as I've seen.
  • Battery life seems reasonable from all the things I've seen but I'm not trying to marathon on battery.
  • Stuff that doesn't have soft touch on major surfaces like palm rest
  • Is the cost worth shooting for a 980m or is a 970m generally more cost efficient overall?
  • Anything with better cooling that doesn't sound like a jet-taking off would be nice.
  • Slim is nice, though the Sager options I've seen so far do just that.
  • Definitely IPS monitor.

If anything I'd put better cooling over how slim it is but both would be excellent. I've mostly been looking at Sager's site and going by graphics card and moving up from the very base model to get stuff like 25mm thin "features. I'm probably gonna pick up another m.2 SSD to add to it on the side alongside another stick of ram.

Looking for some recommendations

Country: USA
Budget: Looking for around 800, Give or take.
Size: Smaller is better, Last one was an 11inch and I loved it
Usage: Honestly, smaller games at best. Nothing too demanding at all. I would like to play like CS:GO, Killing Floor, PoE, and other games at least 5 years older+. Otherwise, I don't need a strong one. Just someone that will run well.

It does need to run my Engineering programs though, IE CAD, Aspen, etc.

Misc Info:
- I think I would like touch screen.
-Smaller the better
-A back light keyboard would be great.
-I want to be able to stream movies, download, etc.
-It has to run fast.

The last Laptop I had was the M11x from Alienware and I loved it.

I have been looking into the Zenbooks, but their performance seems sketchy at best.

Looking to upgrade from my knackered old laptop at last.

Country: UK

Maximum budget: About £1300

Size: Max 17", under 3kg

Specs: I think at least 16GB RAM, a decent sized SSD and HDD. DVD drive if possible but I guess I could always get a external one?

Usage: Needs to be able to capture games via FRAPS and my PVR smoothly, and needs to be a video rendering/editing and Adobe Suite beast for my Youtube channel work (Premiere Pro is my most used program). Game wise I don't play a lot of the more intensive AAA games but being able to run a smooth 60fps 1080p on stuff like Sonic Generations at the least would be great.

Other priorities: The fan needs to be pretty quiet. What I have now sounds like a jet taking off when capping games and my mic picks it all up. HDMI out so I can plug into TVs too.

Was eyeing up the PC Specialist Defiance at first but after reading some reviews am worried about the fan noise. managed to clock up a custom one with some mad specs like 32GB RAM for around £1200 though I'm not sure if that's overdoing it, but if I can get a beast that will last me years of intensive work for that price range so be it :D

Thanks for any help you guys can offer :)

How about this?

Hi K.Jack, I was thinking of getting the Sager NP8651, but is there any particular configuration that you recommend?

I only recommend an SSD and the 2 year warranty. This SKU packs an SSD at a discount, though 120GB is too small for me.

I just gave up and went to amazon. Will arrive on Monday or Tuesday.
got an MSI with the 970m

Which MSI? GT72 or GE62?

I'd go for this. Might as well shoot for the moon with the 980M, with the games you listed being taken into conssideration. It's 25% faster than the 970M, offering a great deal of longevity to the machine.

It has your IPS, has your M.2 SSD slots for later upgrade, has great cooling...

Honestly, the Defiance is such a great value (IPS, 980M, 1TB HDD, 8GB RAM, 240GB M.2 SSD = £1,342.00), I'd sacrifice a bit of fan noise.

You won't find any gaming laptop that's completely silent when it's running a demanding game. What matters is if the fans run when you're just typing a document or browsing the interwebs.

That's cool, so long as I can cap and record my voice without the fan going too loud like my current set up does (and if I so much as open more than one of any program) it should be good, maybe a cooling stand could help with that if it becomes an issue?

Would you say the RAM and CPU will be more important than the GPU for video rendering? Like would a 980M be a better benefit to that than more than 8GB of RAM?

Maximum budget: $600 would probably be toward the upper end. Less is better.

Max size (can be in screen inches, dimensions, weight): I really have no preference on size. Can be smaller (11inch or bigger 15+, but with my budget, smaller is more likely)

Planned usage: Nothing too crazy as far as gaming goes. Older games or indie (like say Transistor/Child of Light/stuff like that). Maybe Left4Dead2. Too be honest, most of my usage would be just browsing the internet and chatting with people more conveniently since my desktop would be my main gaming computer.

The Lenovo Y40 posted above for someone else might be a valid choice, but if there's anything a little cheaper would be cool, too.

Thanks for any help!

Oh and honestly, if you think something like a tablet with keyboard or chromebook would be more fitting for what I'd be doing, you can recommend it, too. In fact, if you have any good/cheap recommendations for a tablet/keyboard combo, can suggest it too! :P

thanks. will definitely go this route within the next week or so.

So I'm hunting for a laptop that will be mostly used for work (school stuff, word processing, etc.) with some Dota 2 and maybe Counter-Strike on the side for under $500, but as little as I can get away with. My goal is to play these games at 60fps, even if I have to bump down a lot of graphics settings.

I narrowed it down to two options and I'd appreciate your opinions.

Acer Laptop Aspire E5-571-53S1
This one looks borderline because of the integrated graphics. I'm guessing I could play Dota 2 at 60fps with dips on low settings across the board at the display's native resolution. Not sure if CSGO would be smooth enough on this machine.

Acer Laptop Aspire E5-573G-59C3
This looks like a solid step up. I like having a dedicated graphics card over Intel's integrated graphics, and the GTX 940m might be enough to comfortably handle Dota 2 at medium settings. I think it could handle CSGO.

Being okay with low graphics settings and 60fps at native resolution, which one would you go for? Anyone have experience playing Dota 2 or CSGO on laptops with similar specs? Anyone have better recommendations with similar specs and prices? Thanks.

edit: Oh yeah, one more.

Dell Inspiron 15 i3543-2501BLK
Specs-wise, it looks slightly worse than the Aspire E5-571-53S1 so I'm not too keen on it unless someone can personally vouch for its amazingness. I couldn't care less about having a touch screen so it's probably not for me.

Oh wow. One hell of a payment clearing process that XoticPC goes through though its understandable. I have however been mulling over the price difference between the 970m and 980m despite having the funds. ~1300 is a bit less to choke on than ~1600 after all. Will have to poke at them about an Amazon listing and then compare from there since those listings feel like they're marked up a bit.

I'm SO conflicted on if I want to get a detachable 2-in-1 tablet/laptop (like the ASUS Transformer) vs a "real" laptop that is more powerful. Part of me thinks I'd just be mostly using the laptop to browse the internet and chat with people anyways, and I wouldn't need a powerful laptop for that... Plus, it'd be lighter and thinner which is a plus. On the other hand, part of me thinks that it'd be nice to have a more expensive "real" laptop that is more powerful so that if I *wanted* to do more stuff, I could. Anyone have any advice?

Closest thing I can find to your wants is the Lenovo Y40. It just doesn't have the touch screen.

I don't mind going a bit lower spec wise or higher price.

I do like the look and power of that one though.

Would you possible recommend a ZenBook? Or something similar. I guess that is my gripe right now, I don't know enough of those, but I do know I'll need something beefy enough for programs.

A few weeks ago I ordered the Lenovo Y50 from Lenovo's website. This has been my experience with it so far.

I originally ordered model number 59425944, which was falsely advertised to include an IPS display. In reality, it's a pre-refresh model with a crap display. My first call to customer support resulted in them sending a replacement - an identical model with the same crap display, even though I was promised IPS.
An hour and a half with customer support later, I was authorized to return the original & replacement laptop for a full refund with no restocking fees, and I got a $75 discount on model number 59440646 + 2yr depot warranty. I'm currently using 59440646 to write this post, and the IPS screen is a world of difference.

Other than that fiasco, the Y50 is a solid laptop. Customer support was nice enough to let me use the laptops while I waited for the replacements, though I still need to wait for the refund credit.
  • Everyday web-browsing and youtubing is good as expected. No SSD, but I need the 1TB of space.
  • Temperatures and gaming performance seem reasonable. Ran the Catzilla benchmark a couple times and played some indie games, but haven't installed any super-intensive AAA games.
  • If you rotate the laptop on its side, the temperatures will jump 20C, which is odd and unfortunate.
  • IPS screen is very good, an order of magnitude better than the crap screen.
  • Keyboard is a bit shallow but otherwise good for typing and gaming. The backlight is useful, too.
  • Synaptics clickpad is fine, good for browsing and obviously unsuitable for gaming. Editing the registry to add three-finger-tap middle-click helps a ton.
  • Battery life is just over 3 hours playing indie games and browsing the web; it could probably be pushed to 4 hours by maximizing power savings.
  • Speakers are very good, but the subwoofer is too boomy to my taste, and the headphone jack had significant hiss. Uninstalling the Realtek audio drivers disables the subwoofer, which makes the bass weaker but punchier, and it also fixes the headphone hiss.
  • Wifi on the non-IPS model was adequate (Intel dual-band AC 7260). Haven't tested it on the current model (Intel dual-band AC 3160).
  • Also the IPS Y50 has significantly less bloatware than the non-IPS Y50.

Country: Australia
Maximum budget: Around $3000 AUD
Max size: Looking at 17.3"
Planned usage: I want really like to play games on ultra, particularly Fallout 4 when it is released (and some power to mod the hell out of it) and MGS V. Currently living away from home on a temporary work site accommodation, whenever I am back home or between this job and the next I would like this to be usable as a replacement for my dated desktop over the next few years.
Misc.: Where I am living I may only be for another 6-8 months, after which I will be looking for work in a similar situation of being away from home for a long time. Possibly most importantly, I would like the fans to be quiet when watching videos as the laptop will only be about 1.5 metres from me, Hi10P anime is what I am assuming is the most demanding video so I will use that as my benchmark.

I haven't bought a laptop in a long time, nor have I bought any PC parts for a long time so I am not sure on reasonable prices. I was looking at this site http://www.metabox.com.au/store/Gaming-Laptops which allowed customisation and had a rather simple design that I like. I would also be open to suggestions for known brand high-power laptops (MSI, Alienware, XPS, Omen).

My mother needs a new laptop.

Country: Canada
Max budget: 700$CAN (the less expensive the better)
Max size: 17inches
Planned usage: accounting and browsing the web

My mother does not play video games or use anything requiring powerful hardware. She only cares about having a laptop that can do what she needs (doing her accounting and browsing the web), lasts a long time and costs as low as possible. It would also be nice if the laptop didn't produce a lot of noise.

I was thinking about getting her a ThinkPad E450 as Lenovo has had a solid reputation over the years, but the reviews don't seem all that hot for it (the screen in particular is supposed to be subpar). Maybe Lenovo laptops aren't what they used to be ? Or maybe the reviewers simply have higher standards than my mother ?

Please help, Gaf. Thank you.

OK, I'm looking at a Macbook for University next year (well, in a few months if all goes to plan) and I was planning on the 15' but my brother says this is a bad idea as it is a little too big and an external monitor for when a bigger screen is needed would be better.

I'm looking and it seems the 13' pro is a better idea than the pro due to the negligible size difference and much bigger spec difference?

edit: Other question is 8GB vs 16GB, is 16 really worth it?

How's the build quality feel? I've been reading about folks going at how it feels cheap and plastic.

kinda sucks that a week after my laptop arrived the new broadwell chips were shipping in the same model i purchased lol

aside from that, i love it, great laptop though i havent fully used it since im waiting for my uncle to bring me the 2 M.2 500GB EVOs i ordered from amazon

i dont know if you can help me k.jack (or anyone that did the swap) of a guide to how and what will i need to change the OS drive, also for some reason the support page doesnt work for me (cant find the updates for the MSI software and what not) and i will need the drivers.

i read it is hard to change the main drive because you have to remove the keyboard but with a guide i think i could do it (i had to do the same for my samsung laptop)

thanks in advance

model: MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 064

I don't know if this is the exact same but: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/msi-gs60-ghost-pro-mini-review-and-upgrade-log.200251/

I'm eyeing the ghost pretty hard despite only really finding any with the 970m. Sort of a sucker for pretty looking.
