Fighting Games Weekly | Jul 6-12 | Freuds Among Us

It's the same camera/control system and it works fine in both games. It's like how MGSV and Vanquish both use the same camera system but are different games yet the camera works in both. Or like how 2D fighters and side scrollers use the same camera.

On the Smash 4 thing, it sucks that it's that early on a Saturday. Should've been Saturday night. Really wondering what the decision was on that.

This is the first EVO where in a while where I had to hold my money hat phrases. Smash 4 and Marvel 3 at those slots cannot be explained by money hats whatsoever.

Money hats, bias, etc. There is always some politics going into these sorts of decisions.

I get that putting together EVO and the scheduling is HARD but 12pm for Smash 4 is some bullshit :/

I'm personally not mad but I find it ridiculous. I may as well just donate to justin champ and Chris g. Also, pot bonuses isn't going to "save" this game it isn't going to generate hype for it either.

It just seems like a ploy by the gods to boost up the winning pot as it's by far the lowest of all the games at EVO (no bonus pot from Capcom/Marvel).

This is essentially free money into the pockets of ChrisG and FChamp who will be splitting anyway.

In any case this is not even close to being as scumbaggish as announcing a kickstarter at your conference. But a hustle is a hustle so it's whatever.... don't get hustled.

Yeah i can see it looking that way, after all one of those 3 are the most likely to win. Those 'rewards' are ridiculous lol

I'm looking forward to the upcoming article "Actually the Evo schedule is good".

Don't know which site will write it, but one of them will.

I actually feel like they could've doubled their numbers if the rewards weren't completely asinine.

Like $50 gets you free subscription/mod status on both JWong and FGTV stream for 3 months plus you get some online casuals/tips with them.

They are on different streams though so how does that explanation make sense?

Also WWWAAAYYYY too much time is being spent streaming Marvel pools when those will be mostly 3-0 body bags. Things won't get interesting until at least pools are over.
Steaming that many pools would be even worse than that, since a lot of early pools in UMvC3 are slopfests that go 3-2 every set because people drop way too much stuff. It's probably less of an issue now as the average skill level is higher, but with a bracket as large as that it's going to have a lot of deadwood.

Running UMvC3 pools is the worst. -_-

Oh wow. I had no idea they had so much effort poured into Melty Blood. Thats a ton of new revisions, system reimagines and effort across a whole decade for anyone. Its pretty inspiring really.

Thanks for this. I'm gonna push harder knowing that this is how something that became a major name in the FGC as the Doujin that could actually happened.
...wait a minute, pushing harder on what? I suspect something is up with all of these random weekly questions. :x

And yeah, their story is insane but it's also the product of a lot of work, a lot of experience (there's no way a raw amateur could create sprite animation that looks that good, and it's fairly common for big doujin projects to be done by industry professionals as a passion project), and a lot of dumb luck. It's kind of sad that we'll probably never see a project like that or Twilight Frontier's early fighters, due to circumstances. (They made Eternal Fighter Zero and Immaterial and Missing Power -- those are actually just as nuts, and were better games at the time of their release).

I was about to comment on that last thing. Why the change? That's just super shitty considering like 90% of the entrants would've had no chance to even touch the game before.

And yeah holy fuck for being the second biggest game Smash U really got fucked over.

I'm fully expecting top 8 to be all-Asia for Tekken 7.

I'm more annoyed with Smash 4 placing.

It's weird how they're doing things. If it was between Melee and Smash 4, I would have definitely chosen Smash 4 for Sunday. Not only does it have more entrants, it's also the newer game and not 15 years old.

Damn, someone dropped $500 on the umvc3 pot

My thing is what's a pot bonus going to do in the long term for the game? Like, they announce theyre crowd funding the pot bonus after registrations for the game is closed? Who are you trying to court into playing this game? Who's supposed to care other than the people who already entered who obviously do to begin with?

Obvious hustle. And those rewards are funny as fuck

That $500 guy is probably some CEO at Marvel who can't officially give a pot bonus to the game but can give it anonymously for support.

Like that's the only thing I can come up with where someone would put down that much money for this...

And can we get some fucking EVO bets lined up?

I like the following for top 8

3+ gods in Melee
2+ gods in Marvel
1+ non American in Marvel
1+ American in GG
2+ Americans in USF4
2+ Americans in T7
16+ different characters in Marvel
6+ different characters in USF4
SonicFox GF at EVO for MKX

(character picks include one time counter picks)

Have you seen the amount of donations some twitch streamers get? Apparently there's a lot of videogame fans who want to give away their money.

You underestimate how much people will spend on the dumbest things. Just look at the $1000+ backer bonuses for Shenmue 3!

Or one of those crazy theory talk c.viper type of dudes

Damn I have serious issues with sunk cost fallacy when it comes to video games. I can't bring myself to drop a character or the game despite how annoyed I might have been a day or two ago at it.

Those guys aren't that crazy though since Viper just won a hefty major...

why are people getting mad by the umvc3 pot bonus thing? Between that and the marvel bounty its clear that he is just trying to save his game, and he isnt taking a cut. Why would you hate on that lol

Or does this just go back to being mad that marvel is #2

My problem with that it's acting like you're putting a show due people demand, when no one put you a gun on the neck to enter that tournament with that prize pool. And it's not like they're not getting paid... It's just that they're getting less that other games.

Imo it's not moral to act like that. You're compiting on that tournament because you like the game, you like the tournament and you're expecting to do well and reach the prizes EVO put at first.

Also, if you're aiming to give more people a payout, why not reduce the first places prizes and give the last ones a bit more of the split?

Anyway, people can do whatever they want to. It's not my money. I just find kinda sad the situation.
Why aren't they and their friends doing a pot bonus by themselves? Cuz they want to get more money, not lose it...
This can only happen in America. Imposible to Imagine Japanese players acting the same way.

Yea the gods should've led by example and put in a lot of money on their own into the pot. I mean Justin already put the Bounties out so I guess he already put up some money (kind of).

I'm really tempted to take the under on those T7 and GG lines -- this would be pending the reveal of the T7 brackets, of course. Most of the other ones are pretty reasonable, except maybe SonicFox vs. the field in MKX, but his track record in MKX is pretty goddamn gross.

Also, throwing our a random sidebet: who wins more tournaments Evo weekend (between main games and side games): SonicFox or GO1?

What're SonicFox's top games outside of Mortal Kombat?
I don't know if any of the Japanese coming play Under Night In Birth, but if they do, he's probably not getting that.

...wait a minute, pushing harder on what? I suspect something is up with all of these random weekly questions. :x

Its not really a secret. Nothing I can talk much on either since its got very little actually built yet in engine or in maya. I had a BA in Animation but with the state of the industry I took a career change to industrial power generation and process technologies. As it turned out this ended up making me FAR more able to pursue my real goals in the gaming industry as an independent because it meant I no longer had to compromise on my goals and could just work on whatever I wanted with no fear of going hungry if its market didn't have as much appeal as say some new shooter or cell phone trend lol. My bills are paid no matter what the game ever does if it even does anything at all.

I do the CG, the engine stuff now that I got some, and slowly outsource hourly assistance from folks to help me build what I'm not capable of. QisTopTier is my head combat advisor and general bro on this because he plays fucking everything and because we mesh well when we just hook up and chat goals and ideas for me to work on. Neither of us is really loyal to any one game, but mainly just the genre and the potential some things have to make a good game. Got a lot of stuff on paper, a few things in CG, and a looooooooooooooooooong way to go. Nothing even close to playable given I work around a swing shift schedule in industrial areas, but its something I get to do and pour myself into.

Mainly right now I'm still finalizing a lot of art and basics and just touching the tip of the work on my models. Still need UV's, weights, rig finalization, and textures and thats before animation fucking one gets started. Still...I get to make it and can say fuck the haters if I want to. I got the freedom to polish it as long as I care about it and I care a lot. Maybe several years from now I'll have something starting to come along enough to show for it...maybe I'll just have a pile assets to redo again lol.

Its my after work sanity project that I like to work on. I hope someday I can have something that comes out and can entertain folks. Hearing how long it took the Melty Blood folks to realize that goal even after their first outing is pretty inspiring given how much it takes to even get that far. Makes me want to push harder.

I honestly don't think I'm the only one here who is trying to make some sort of fighting game project outside their daily life either.

He said side games as well so there might be an Injustice side tournament. Also Skullgirls but probably not.

Hey guys remember Injustice?

I like 2 or less Americans in Top 8 for Tekken 7.

DOA5:LR, Skullgirls, Injustice. He's decent at UNIEL but wouldn't win even an American-only tournament, and one of the JP UNIEL players coming to Evo is... GO1. :p

Yeah Sonicfox don't play the capcom games too much. I remember when I think either Ultradavid or james chen asked him why he won't play sf, he said "I play what I like lol" I respect the man for that. Too much people under capcom's thumb.

It's not that people are under Capcom's thumb, it's that people play what other people around them are playing.

I see far too few people playing other games. It's mainly them playing just 1 game and mono gamers are kind of odd to me.
I blame MMOs

It's because people usually only have enough time to get hardcore into one game at a time. And they would rather get into the one game with the most active players.

That's why you usually see people either play DOTA 2 hardcore or LoL hardcore but rarely both. Way too much time investment and effort just to keep up with one game.

It's unfortunate but it's true.

Also, I played through 2/3 of the DOTA 2 tutorial. I knew I didn't like RTS very much before but this point and click system is not suiting me very well. The camera system is also annoying me. Maybe it gets more fun and in depth once I play actual games?

Not saying I aprove that reward, but it's different. You're giving money to help something get the resource to make a better product. A product that without your help, was not going to happen.
You can't compare it to this. Nothing assures you that the tournament it's going to be better... And tournament was going to happen anyway.

It's funny that justin says "this will definitely make the matches more hype and stressful at the same time." You can make the same by doing a side bet like Mango-Leffen did at Apex...

Do we even know that EVO will accept that money for Marvel?

I'm guessing Justin will make the payout.

Man some one put 300$. Insane.

I doubt they'll make 10k, but I can see 4-6k
