Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I agree with all of you points but I 1000% agree with the bold. I have all three consoles, but reading some of the comments on Gaf makes me want to throw my PS4 out the window. Sometimes I don't want to post on Gaf because the defense force will get angry.
I'm just going to assume you weren't here during the heyday of the Xbox 360 where plenty of people said the opposite.

Sometimes a platform just wins a ton of mindshare, but it shifts and ebbs.

no need to make me feel even more useless while playing games XD.

Oh and i think the combat mechanics are NOT good.

Monster hunter is WAY better and the difficulty curve is WAY better designed.

lol

You're never gonna lose more than 15 minutes of progress at most.

Not to mention the countless threads complaining about Dualshock 4 quality, PSN servers, PS+ monthly games etc. Feels like one or two of these pop up every other day, and they're mostly filled with agreeing posts.

No arguments from me regarding those complaints popping up once or twice a week. That's more of the short comings of their preferred system of choice though.

Not trying to generalise here, but I've often found that people who try to make 'hivemind' arguments about multiplatform gaming forums are folk too used to being in an echo chamber (eg. Xbox subreddit) environments so it's a bit of a culture shock for them to look at a more diverse community and find a multitude of contrary opinions challenging their own. Hence opposing opinions = bias/hivemind when the reality is of course the far more straightforward multiplatform gaming community + most popular console = consensus. I mean, I know it's not nice to feel in the minority or anything, but thems the realities of multiplatform gaming communities.

Just how I've always seen the situation.

-The PS4 UI is extremely boring and bland. It just lacks soul and personality. Where is the customization?
-XB1 games lineup is vastly superior to the PS4's so far. Time could change this.
-Black Ops 3 looks terrible. Everything from the campaign to multiplayer looks like a step backwards from Advanced Warfare.
-It's a damn shame the WiiU didn't catch on. With 3rd party support, it might have been the only system I owned most of this gen.
-As someone that has Shenmue in his Top 5 all time games, the announcement of 3 didn't stun me the way I was expecting. Maybe the lack of gameplay...
-Neogaf is a pro Sony site
-First impressions are strong as hell in gaming. Outside of the $399.99 announcement at E3 2013 I don't see why the PS4 is so popular.
-VR headsets are going to flop.
-Horizon was the only game @ E3 that had wow factor.

*raises flame shield

I take it, that you weren't here during the start of the last gen?

Care to elaborate?
That is the view from outside Gaf is that it's pro Sony. Am I making that up?
Also do you think people complaining about controllers falling apart or services being down is not valid? Brushing it off as just negativity against Sony is the worst kind of fanboyism.
We get the same threads when Live goes down or any other shortcomings of the other systems.

I don't particularly enjoy any of Naughty Dog's games. I wouldn't argue that they're not well-made or whatever. I just don't have fun playing them.

Shame, really, because I was really invested in the characters and adventure of Uncharted. It felt like a real modern day Indiana Jones. I would love a Netflix series or something.

Please tell me you haven't played Crash Team Racing, by far the best ND game? ;-;

I trust this is not a controversial opinion. CTR IS the best game ND has made.

GAF reflects the gaming landscape. Right now, Sony are the outright leaders this gen in sales terms so it makes sense there might be a few more Sony fans here these days. If Xbox or Nintedo start kicking ass, or Sony fuck up big time, things would likely be very different around here.

True!
Ok so back on topic, although I did enjoy Halo 2 I found it pretty overrated and actually prefer 3 & 4

I admit I have not. I've played the first Crash game, the first two Jak games, all three Uncharted, and The Last of Us.

Is it on PSN?

The 3d Zelda games, aside from Wind Waker in some respects, are well-made, but they are not fun games to play. The stories aren't compelling, the worlds aren't rich, and the gameplay is not exciting.

I would place Metroid Prime in the best FPSes of all time list. The game was fantastic. Yes, there is some backtracking. But it's a unique, amazing experience and it had the best level design of any FPS ever.

I never before have dared to confess this but...

I thought Super Paper Mario was kinda fun.

I'll double down on this, Super Paper Mario was really fun. It just gets a lot of backlash for changing from a traditional jrpg style to a platformer. I was initially disappointed by the change, but the game was fun enough on it's own merits that I got over it.

I still really, really, really want a Paper Mario game that's in the style of the original & Thousand Year Door though.

On EU PSN at least. The biggest minus for it is of course the lack of online play that modern kart racers have. However as a game it still holds up really, really well. Doubly so if you are/were a Crash fan.

The biggest joy of it is the local multiplayer but personally I love the single player campaing as well. Great stuff to play on Vita.

The Witcher 3 is not a fun game. I bought it on release day and it never grabbed me. I ended up trading it in for the same price I bought it for. (BB gamers club FTW) It's just another boring typical "euro-jank" rpg to me. I might revisit it again as a $20 Complete Edition to see if the numerous patches fixed it enough.

Tomboyish is a trait that often goes hand in hand with the preference. And the characters were written in a very natural way, it didn't feel like the writers were making assumptions or generalising at all.

What we got were two young girls exploring their feelings for each other. It didn't feel forced, or simplified, or some kind of caricature like many stereotypes end up being.

And it certainly wasn't more of the same, it wasnt same old same old. What is same old same old is white heterosexual. We got two LGBT girls, one of them a person of colour, and both incredibly well written. That's a pretty decent step forward.

Heterosexual romance with an empowered female character is almost never done, especially when that female character is the lead role. The Remember Me devs explicitly stated that publishers were extra-skittish about having a playable female who would be shown kissing men, because it would make male players uncomfortable.

I'm sure the choice to make Ellie gay/bi wasn't done explicitly to serve those players, but it certainly does allow the male playerbase to sidestep the "issue" of the character they're projecting themselves onto making out with a dude.

Druckmann and Straley noted that they decided to make the DLC a romance after reading the prequel comic, in which Ellie and Riley's friendship seemed very platonic. I don't want to disparage them, as they are both brilliant writers, but this does seem like a misstep borne from the rarity of two tomboyish young women just being friends in fiction.

(And yes, I'm aware that Straley confirmed that Ellie would've been just as into Riley if the latter was a dude, but that isn't the story we got so it's largely irrelevant.)

I'm genuinely confused as to how the fuck there are people in this world who are so profoundly short on common sense and critical thinking skills, that they legitimately don't understand this shit. Like the goddamn real world doesn't favor Sony in the context of the 'big three' right now.

probably a bit tame for this thread but i thought the first uncharted game was way better than the second.

Second had too many annoying stealth sequences and QTE set pieces. Plus i preferred the setting in the first game aswell.

The first game actually had way more QTE sequences than the second, including surprise attack "press triangle to dodge an insta-kill block" and an entirely QTE final fight. None of the set-pieces in U2 were QTE driven, but were rather moving level designs that added additional quirks to the core combat and traversal mechanics.

U2 also only had one (admittedly boring) forced stealth sequence in the beginning of the game. Any other stealth you do is purely optional.

I very much doubt ND gave a fuck about those people.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how multiple progressive steps in one game (well written female, x2, LGBT, one a person of colour) can be spun to be negative, especially when nothing about their writing shows they're making generalisations or assumptions.

There's no misstep here, just a well handled and natural story about two young girls exploring their sexuality.

Sure, but it took you a lot of time/focus and trial and error. Some people don't enjoy that, it really isn't difficult to see why someone wouldn't enjoy the Souls games.

It's totally reasonable for someone to say they don't like being challenged in games but complaining about the save system or checkpoints in the Souls games (both of which are very forgiving) is definitely pretty scrubby, yeah.

GAF reflects the gaming landscape.
Lol, no. GAF worships Vita and thinks no one wants to play NSMB games. GAF thinks Bayonetta was the best game released last year. GAF passionately hates Paper Mario Sticker Star. GAF hates mobile games. You get the point :P

It's not scrubby at all, not by default anyway. There are legitimate reasons to dislike the design of the Souls games that having nothing to do with the challenge.

He would get destroyed playing various old games from the NES era then if he doesn't get used to trial and error.=p

Zelda.... Meh the series as a whole has just never grabbed me. Forced myself to finish Twilight Princess and Wind Waker. Aside from the classics which were must plays but I never really enjoyed them.

FWIW, a lot of core gamers hate mobile games. I rarely agree with most of what GAF says, but the only mobile title I can tolerate is Terra World and that's because I'm holding out for a console version and 'cause I wish Mistwalker made larger-scale games.

Yeah, I think they're fairly flawed games too; it's reasonable to have issues with them for one reason or another. But complaining about losing three hours of progress to one error and about the "ass-backwards save system" (which really isn't particularly punishing) shows bad taste.

Sony was the worst thing to happen to gaming and is directly responsible for the ridiculous console first mentality studios have. It will also be first to fall on the "core gamer" sword. Although that could be SE console division.

Also mobile gaming will be the future of innovative products going forward as Sony and MS double down on toxuc AAA mentality.

It's done a hell of a lot more than with LGBT characters.

When? In popular fiction, I can't think of many examples of explicit heterosexual relationships with empowered, "tomboyish/masculine" women at all. Especially playable/main characters.

LGBT: Ellie, Korra, Athena (Borderlands), Ciri, Chie...

Asexual: Furiosa, Katniss (she is portrayed as not being thrilled with her time with Peeta), Lara Croft (possibly LGBT)...

Straight: Fetch from Infamous and er... Claire Redfield?

Nonplayable is a different issue, with characters like Jack from Mass Effect coming into play, but even then it's the story of Male Shepard romancing Jack instead of the other way around.

Look, my core point is that Bill sexuality was great because it subverts expectations of what a gay man "is supposed to be like" according to popular media. Ellie's sexuality is a bland development because she's everything society tells us lesbians/bisexuals are (in a manner that is totally baseless and harmful for women in general, as behavior/style should never be indicative of sexual preference).

Agreed. You're playing it wrong, if you've played for three hours without going to a lantern. The point is to open shortcuts, which enable you to move from lantern to lantern in a matter of minutes.

Least controversial comment I've seen in the last 5 pages. Banned 4 lyfe.

You have a very limited knowledge of gaming if that's all you could come up with.

And I disagree with your core point.

Yes, there's the stereotype of the butch tomboy lesbian, but tomboyish traits are actual common partners with the sexual preference in question, and I don't believe Ellie is portrayed in the stereotypical way at all, just a believable one.

It's definitely not harmful, it's absolutely a good step forward.

And not everything has to subvert to be great. It can just be a plain old reflection of life written in a well balanced way.

Until Dawn will be well-received and will sell quite well. I've got a good feeling about that game.

Just Cause 3 will sell at least 4-5 million copies.

I agree with all of you points but I 1000% agree with the bold. I have all three consoles, but reading some of the comments on Gaf makes me want to throw my PS4 out the window. Sometimes I don't want to post on Gaf because the defense force will get angry.

I'll add, that if you like Xbox One over PS4 for any reason, some people get really pissed off.

Edit: Horizon was absolutely stunning IMO. It really was the only game that blew me away. I am expecting big things from Gorilla and that IP. Best thing at E3 for sure.

While I can see why you feel that way...calling NeoGAF outright "pro-Sony" is way overboard. GAF is very diverse in its tastes, with good representation across all console platforms, handhelds, PC and mobile...along with a lot of people who just like games and don't have any particular allegiances. Every platform has its defense force. That said, there are a whole lot of vocal Sony fans here (and some of them are annoying, but that's also true of Nintendo fans and others) and while the fandom waxes and wanes somewhat, the Sony popularity here has been more-or-less true ever since the death of the Sega Dreamcast. That's partly due to the fact that many gamers started gaming during the PS1 era, and more recently partly due to the fact that the PS4 is better targeted towards "core" gamers than the other consoles. The "system preference" flame war threads here were far more blatant 10-15 years ago.

ill be shocked. Game journalist love to shit on qtes especially on a retail game.

Victim complexes about how other companies dislike Nintendo are creepy and fanboyish.

Yamauchi was at worst a white collar criminal and at best an insular, monopolist bully and he set up Nintendo to be hostile to third parties, and they are practicing his teachings to this day. Nintendo are reaping what they have sown.

All the Dragon Quest news got me thinking and I'm not sure how controversial this is but, it has quite possibly some of the worst music out of any JRPGs. I really dislike the main theme. Only ones I've played are DQ1, 4, and 9 but my main complaint about the series is just how god awful the music is. I guess it fits the tone and look of the series but I just dislike it. Unlike FF where there is so much iconic music, I can't think of one DQ song other than the main theme that might be considered iconic.

If someone could link me to music from any DQ games that might change my opinion, please do.

I just finished playing (and getting the platinum for) Bloodborne. I have to say it was my least favourite of From's "Souls" RPGs (using the quotes because I know it's not technically a Souls game). It was the first time I never really felt the need to create a new character for another playthrough.

Gaf is diverse for sure. No denying that fact. Maybe it's the way view topics, but I still stand by it. I'll give you an example. Last gen, people here destroyed MS for having 3rd party exclusive content, CoD for instance. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, it's alright that Sony is doing it. Granted not all are alright with it, but MS got owned here for doing it. Another example, everytime there is a game that's releasing on Xbox One and PC, inside the thread, everyone has to say "I'll get this on PC". Why state this? If it's a MS Game Studio game, you are still paying MS. From my viewpoint, it's more severe in MS threads than Sony's when a game is releasing on PC too. Like I said, this is my opinion.
