Fighting Games Weekly | Jul 6-12 | Freuds Among Us

I'm watching the ESL finals and it's amazing how little energy there is in the crowd or from the commentators. It sounds like they're doing the evening news.

I don't need (or want) them shouting every three seconds, but if the commentators and crowd don't care about the games, why should the viewers?

yea I feel like it's a little too... timid in production.

I always wanna participate in these threads, but I usually attend EVO so it becomes pointless. :P

I'm hoping I hit EVO next year- though depends on a few things. This year was the first time budget+time matched, but nothing I wanted to play this year.

SFV at least is a fresh start and should be less setplay oriented for the first year.

More of a rhetorical one. Embrace the eeeeeeeeeeeee-sports.

Speaking of fighting game commentary, I don't know how many people saw the leaked commentary notes for WWE commentators a while back (and the Reddit thread for it), but I haven't seen it mentioned here yet. Most of the advise actually seems reasonable and applicable, and would probably be useful for anyone looking to do FGC commentary.

I saw this one twitter. I really thought the notes were really cool and gave some insight on how they do things.

Some of it, some of it would turn you into Michael Cole. I'd rather have Jessica Nigri and the one dude who didn't know what a hadoken was commentating Evo finals than Michael Cole.

(To be fair, Jessica Nigri's actual FGC commentary was actually pretty good for someone who didn't know a lot about it, commentating is harder than it looks- I sound like Terry Gordy doing a Badstreet promo when I'm commentating)

I do think pool play and finals play require a different set of commentator skill. In pool play you often have to drive the action with your personality, whereas finals play speaks for itself.

yea no.... This list just exposes Vince McMahon's control-freakish nature when it comes to commentary because WWE commentary is heavily criticized currently because it is very bad..

IF YOU ARE AN FGC COMMENTATOR, DO NOT FOLLOW THIS LIST

Obviously Justin Wong isn't going to be there... he's saving that shit for EVO.

Can't be having people download him right before EVO.

It's OK, but I think this one is king right now. Works much better at it's job. The SF one is too long.

that is no where near is good as V's right now

The sign of a good song or sound track in a game, to me is when you are in an entirely different time and mood and the song has now dictated what time and mood it is. You don't feel like playing the game you hear it and you like " ...I kinda wanna play [insert game here]" right now. I don't get that from yagata, this isn't the only factor of a good track, but if your track does that its a good sign

Not only does V do that, its like " Hey you remember early 2000's late 90's angst rock, I hope you like it guess what the hell time it is!" and you are like " I didn't know I was still about that life "

Yeah, even with the long history of most Curleh's getting little to no promotion this one is especially bad, and I don't even know a single notable player going, only seeing people say they aren't going to be there. The timing on this one was really bad.

Sonic Fox is goin with Kitana and NOT Tanya or Erron Black? huh...this should be interesting.
EDIT: Lol! nevermind. GET REKT PL. Kitana puttin in the hurt.

DOUBLE EDIT:

aaaaaaaand BRUTALITY! Get bodied.

There was a moment some time around or just before they started doing the Battle Royales where promotion just went away completely for Curlehs. From streams, websites, everything. They started becoming more frequent, tacked onto existing events, etc. Lost a bit of it's luster IMO, even though it's almost always a good time. I would like it if it became more of an annual thing to build up to.

Yeah I think the super frequent Battle Royales tacked onto whatever major hurt the "brand" a little bit. Definitely stopped seeming like something special
