Is Crash Team Racing the best Mario Kart like ?

CTR is way more fun than single player Mario Kart 64 but the multiplayer doesn't do it for me which is really what I'm looking for out of a kart racer. Same can be said for DKR.

I only played CTR for the first time last year and had a lot of fun with it, its still a great game. I prefer Sonic Transformed though but because it feels more like an arcade racer and that where my genre preferences lie anyway.

.... No, but really, for me it is Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing and Transformed are some of the best Mario Kart clones out there. I haven't played Crash Team Racing to compare it.

If you're not some noob who doesn't know how to power-drift and hop, the tunnel of ramps in Sewer Speedway is the best kart racing experience period.

I always preferred Diddy Kong Racing, personally.

Another vote for Sonic & Sega All Star Racing Transformed.

Mario Kart 8 is still the best Kart Racer so far in my opinion, but Sonic sits as the best clone.

Others were good back in the day, but they've been bested by newer games.

CTR was def better than Mario Kart 64. I think Mario Kart DS is the best complete package kart racer though. CTR had probably the best story mode of any Kart Racer though imo.

I feel like I always gotta say this in these threads, even though it's not nearly on the level of CTR, DKR, S&ASRT, or even MK7/8, but Crash Tag Team Racing is a lot of dumb fun. Crunch + N. Gin = damn, suckah

The best track in the game IMO-- N. Gin Labs.

You could get a ridiculous amount of boosting accomplished on that track, and it had plenty of cool little time savers all throughout.

Cool ass music too. :)

Goddamn right! This is like the first track I pick whenever I boot up the game.

Well, this or Papu's Pyramid. Bypassing that curve at the end without powerups...

I would be interested in knowing who of the people that mention Crash Team Racing have even played the game recently, and in all honesty, how can you say that this is a better Kart racer than, say, Sonic Transformed?

You need to sort this out tbh. (PC version if at all possible)

But I already have the Vita version from PS+! :((

I play CTR like every year (dat Vita for SP!). I wouldn't know how to compare it to Sonics yet doe.

it's a fantastic and i played it for the first time in 2013. drift mechanic is so so fun and makes the whole race engaging and the tracks are maybe best in genre from a game design perspective (unfortunately the crash aesthetic is very ugly), so diverse and so tightly constructed around sequences of engaging challenges. while the design feels like a the principles behind the platformers adapted to a racer (almost f-zero like in this regard) rather than just the aesthetic and approachability, the strengths of the game makes it feel as much like a genuinely good traditional racer, than just an accessible, charming chaos simulator.

diddy kong racing is the quintessential rare game in that it nails the charming presentation, complexity with all the vehicle types and memorable explorable hub worlds but the fundamentals are poor and make it a plodding experience when not listening to chirpy music. i think they spent about five minutes laying out the tracks from a gameplay challenge perspective rather than presentation and another 10 thinking about how to make the vehicles control in a fun way. it's still a good game but not top standard.

sonic and sega transformed is very good though a lot of the appeal comes from the sega smash bros stuff. single player progression is so good.

mario kart 8 is greatest of all, though ctr still has some strengths over it.

Sonic Racing Transformed plus more MKwii drifting and more MK weapons in general would be okay, but the weapons in Sonic Racing were pretty bad imo, like mostly kinda boring. Otherwise a great game.

I play the game every year and it's still top tier. It definitely feels old after all the advances in racing games since, but I'm continually amazed at how tight it still is.

Playing them back to back it's not like "Oh yeah, Sonic Transformed is clearly superior," they both just feel really damn good.

100% CTR recently. It holds up very well. And it's better than any MK (though I admit I haven't played 8, so I can't compare them).

This feels like some sort of bait, but I'll bite.

CTR has tighter controls than any kart racer I've played. That's really all that matters. Boosts are well designed so that you can maintain them if you can execute, tracks are spaced in such a way that you can maintain high speeds around all the bends, again, if you execute properly... etc. etc.

Like I said, that's really all there is to it. It feels better. And it rewards actually playing well, which is something I find lacking in the MK series.

CTR is better than any Mario Kart game in my opinion.

Fun Fact: Those "innovating" gravity tracks that Mario Kart 8 advertised to death? Yeah they ripped that off Crash Nitro Kart down the the animation when the wheels flip on the side.

It is my favorite karting game for sure, although there is undoubtly lot of nostalgia speaking in there too. Still having tournaments with friends from time to time.

Mario Kart 8 is great too, but why I still think CTR is better is because of the boost system. The boost mechanic gives me more sense of involvement in the game than the mk equilevant.

The gameplay is sooo good. You always feel like you can do better and it's so fun and easy to pick up but so hard to master.

It's also a Kart game where skill plays much more of a factor than luck. It's pretty much perfect to be honest.

Just look at how that boost stacks up.

This video brings back memories. Damn, son!

CTR is truly a god-tier kart racer.

It's not the most influential (that would have to be Super Mario Kart, genre grandpappy).

It doesn't have the best sense of speed (I'd say that would be Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed).

It doesn't have the best graphics (Any kart racer post-PS1 era).

But damn if it doesn't shit on a whole lot of those other guys when it comes to gameplay.

We need Naughty Dog to do a PS4 remake of CTR! Does Activision hold the rights for Crash in general or just the platformers?

These threads always end up in a MK vs CTR fanboy war where the minority have actually played both. In other words, a pointless discussion.

I've played both and CTR shits on MK from a great height. When MK gets a proper single player mode it can come back into the discussion.

I played CTR extensively as a kid, and I still play it every few years and always have a great time.

I picked up MK64 in 2008 for the first time, and played from start to finish and found it thoroughly disappointing compared to CTR. It's not even on the same level. It feels budget by comparison.

For real. I'm pretty sure that the only reason anybody would ever prefer MK64 over CTR is due to nostalgia. I honestly cannot think of any other reason

CTR is certainly the most technical kart game and built with skill in mind

and I enjoyed the single player which is something I can't say for any other kart game (that includes DKR)

it also has lots of options which is rare for a kart game

Mario Kart 64 is fucking awful. It's pretty much my go-to metric to judge when someone can't recognise shit gameplay design.
